Software / Re: whats the deal with OS9 and BW/16color modes?
« Last post by joevt on Yesterday at 06:05:29 AM »
It has nothing to do with the display and everything to do with the hardware and driver.

SheepShaver's emulated graphics device supports all color depths and resolutions in Mac OS 9.0.4.

A program shouldn't depend on a color depth unless it's using its own drawing routines.

A game that's made for the original black and white Macs, on top of requiring a black and white mode, may also require a specific resolution (512x342) and even a specific framebuffer address.

I suppose you could make an emulated framebuffer in a newer Mac and copy that buffer to the real framebuffer at 60fps (or less if that takes too much processing power). Changing the framebuffer address is probably not possible (unless you can do something tricky with virtual memory?) - it may be easier to patch the program.

Hardware / QS 867 -> 933
« Last post by Jacques on Yesterday at 12:00:52 AM »
Overclocked my 867 module last night and it runs really well now. Was a bit hesitant at first but so easy to do. I had a non working 9250 ATI card I scavenged a 102 1k resistor from, did the swap and all is good!

While I had the heatsink off I removed the foil strip, masked off the contact area and set to it with 600 and 1200 automotive paper. The contact surface is now almost mirror smooth and even at 933mhz the heatsink stays very cool during use with the addition of a dot of Arctic 4 paste.

Well worth doing in the end.

Hardware / Re: PSU Goo / adhesives
« Last post by Jacques on May 18, 2024, 11:53:46 PM »
While i had my machine open last night I applied some rtv to the caps I had replaced. The inside of that psu is so crammed. If you are servicing / cleaning then moving the cable bundle on mine also pushes the three caps from side to side. I’m glad I put some on now. I also applied a pea sized amount touching the top only of the heat sleeve of that resistor (near the fan control board) and the top of the capacitor next to it to ensure they never come in contact again.

Hardware / Re: QS 867 Rev A with speaker 'hiss'

I could quite happily just disconnect the speaker :) I just don’t like an unsolved issue.

Thank you.
