Update: I did not find the firewire cable for the burner, but now I am the owner of a La Cie drive that looks like this

I learned the connector to the right of the USB port is FW400 and the next is FW800, and it came with a FW400 to 800 cable. So, I once again dd the 'MacOS 922 Universal-os9lives.iso' to the drive, connected it to the mini, booted in the "C" mode... and the drive was not listed.

Going nowhere slowly

1. Not all FireWire and not all LaCie drives are OS9 bootable.
http://macos9lives.com/smforum/index.php?topic=6744.msg51542#msg51542

2. Try pressing 'opt' key instead of 'C'

3. Drive inside your LaCie box is too big (?)

4. Your drive was/is partitioned.

5. 'MacOS 922 Universal-os9lives.iso' won't boot Mac Mini. You need Ross Darker's v9 installer.

  • Good to know. Given that I do not have a MacOS box with firewire port, I have to rely on Linux to tfind the LaCie firmware. dmseg or smartctl have not helped; best I got so far is info on the drive inside the LacCie itself, TOSHIBA MK1059GSM
  • I also tried the Alt button, and did get to the menu you are supposed to select a boot device from. Incidentally, I am using a Lenovo keyboard; does that matter?
  • Possibly, it is a 1TB drive
  • I thought by dd'ing the iso I would conveniently bypass any partiioning concern,
otherwise I will be in a chicken-n-egg situation as I have nothing with a firewire port running MacOS.  I could dd the entire drive first with /dev/random.
  • I originally thought the link in the original post (which read as a TL;DR:) was the right one, but it leads nowhere ("The topic or board you are looking for appears to be either missing or off limits to you"). So instead I thought the url in https://macos9lives.com/smforum/index.php?topic=2408.msg56083#msg56083 would do the trick.

After your reply I used the wayback machine and found that was the instructions (https://web.archive.org/web/20231003060223/https://macos9lives.com/smforum/index.php?topic=4365.msg30502#msg30502) but the link to the actual files (google drive) no longer works. Is there an alternative url I can use?

Sounds like your TOSHIBA MK1059GSM is indeed 1TB drive. It won't work, no matter what. Been there, done that.
Do you have any smaller drive at hand? Preferrably 120GB or smaller.
If, so, dd the iso to that drive or use Linux version of iBored to clone it. See my thread about 17" PowerBook. iBored method always worked for me but I'm not 100% sure about dd.
Then take your LaCie apart (it's quite tricky, tbh.), install the smaller drive into it and you should be good to go.
Yours has FW400 port, which means that it must be older than my two and should be OS9 bootable.

And, I know nothing about using PC keyboards with Macs.

Update: following @ssp3's suggestion, I popped the cover off the LaCie and replaced the 1TB drive with a 60GB SSD I had in a drawer, unloved. And then I used the *correct* install image (thanks @aBc), a and as the attached picture shows, I now have my Mini G4 not only running it OS9 but it also works with the monitor I used during the install (I did not check how responsible it was).

I already installed os9vnc for it, as I plan to access it that way.

Thanks for all the help!

@thirdbanana, I see that you have the unfortunate combination of 1.5 GHz Mini and Dell Ultrasharp U2412M.
You might want to check this thread for some further information http://macos9lives.com/smforum/index.php?topic=7048.0

I just happened to drop in here and it begs the question:

Are you all going for some kind of a record here? I mean… 78 pages???

I don't have a Mini and probably never will but I still shudder at the thought of coming here for help with a just-acquired Mini thinking "I know… OS9Lives! will know how" then finding this rambling, zig-zagging, seemingly endless incomprehensible discourse.

Maybe, just maybe someone ought to volunteer to consolidate and summarize it all into something that would actually be helpful to someone who doesn't have a month to make sense out of it all.

I'm just sayin'……

Yes please! Something we can publish on the main page and maybe link to this thread for questions. But I agree with Gary; who would have the time and focus to read through 78 pages?

you could say the same about several other topics here, but it is relatively easy to give starters an advice which covers the major points.

use our installer image, if you want dual boot without too much hassle, dont even attempt to install OSX internally on use a second internal drive, for pro audio use ASIO, for soundmanager many cheap adapters will work but not all. for soundmanager the volume prefs do not work, in our image it has been set to a fixed value. in some cases certain monitors might not work at all, but this mostly affects the 1.3 and 1.5 model. if oyu don´t get it to work, kick the macmini against the wall and insult us.

In the interim period and until a suitable volunteer
might come forward, perhaps the current thread needs
to be locked and a new thread(s) created?

Possibly entitled:
G4 Mac Mini Q&A or G4 Mac Mini OS 9 Help
listed directly under Mac OS 9 booting on: Mac mini
G4 (Detailed Posts)
.

If you consider that the original thread (now, even
since the transition alone) leads the Top 10 Topics (by
Views and in Replies) here, it’s only likely going to
exceed the current count of 78 pages… and the now
672,987 reads?

Stop the bloat now.

AND whoever volunteers and accepts the challenge,
might then also sort through and move certain posts
from within the locked thread to the new?

*Probably even just a bit after the introduction of v.9?
*First mention of v.9 = post #992 (Ross Darker)
October 16, 2019. Page 50.

And then there was also this… (post #988)

Was the original thread NOT intended as an examination OF
and experiments ON / WITH the  development of the overall
goal? AND NOT so much for answering questions about how
to solve the more mundane installation & other issues of use?

There are many install videos available on YouTube.
Like this one from House of Moth:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lt2AYXMLzgY

Until today, checking the very first post under the topic
- DieHard was the last to note a link to the v.9 ISO
image. And that was 4 years ago in 2020! No small
wonder that people couldn’t find the installer around
here... after the transition.

So… maybe keep the first 50 pages under the old
Mac OS 9 booting on: Mac mini G4 (Detailed Posts)
and move the remainder to a new heading (Maybe
even as a Part II) - for those that want to read it all?
And then create the G4 Mac Mini Q&A or
G4 Mac Mini OS 9 Help?

So there’s my 2 cents. :o

And it seems that this isn't the first time that Gary
has mentioned this tiny concern?  ;)

Yes, that's  a good idea. Pinned and locked. Maybe cleaned of unnecessary chatter too.

I too have a feeling that we're troubleshooting every newcomer's Mini in this thread.

Yes and yes.

I did my part in creating Mac Mini display related thread, maybe someone can write a short FAQ?
Also, maybe it's possible to create another, Mini SSD drive and adapter thread and move the old posts from other threads there? I know that both of us have done a great deal of testing those ;)

P.S. What does the 'Split Topic' function do?
