I saw this thread at Thinkclassic
https://www.thinkclassic.org/viewtopic.php?pid=3340#p3340

And I know a lot of you like your anonymity, but I thought it would be cool to get some personal background (names and locations can be left out to protect the innocent) on members, even though I feel like I know you guys.  We have been going full throttle finding all that awesome OS 9 DAW stuff and system upgrades for so long, that now is may be nice to fill in the gaps of what brought us here...

Again, this is an optional thread, so don't cancel your membership if Interpol is still looking for you.

I will break the ice

And I am proud to be a member of a group where so many choose to learn something deeper and maximize its potential.
I am sure many of you embrace new technology and are not ignorant regarding the latest and the greatest, but maybe we like to sip our wine a little slower, maybe planned obsolescence doesn’t sit well with us... at least, for now.

I strongly believe the inherent value in Classic Mac hardware together with the Classic Mac OS and the synergy between the two is that it can still inspire us to want to use a computer... the balance between function and form cannot be understated, it simply works... it produces results... and we enjoy the experience along the way.  I can almost compare it to driving a car with a standard transmission where the driver is more in control... the newer car with the automatic transmission (although a  sweet ride) tends to make us feel like we are being driven.

Great works of art can leave a lasting impression on the psyche.  I remember it like it was yesterday... Although I had been working with both Macs & PCs since the 80s, the defining moment was when our group loaded a pre-release of Mac OS 8.5.1, it left a lasting impression... thru the appreciation of its existence and the creative inspiration it manifested, it would change my perception of a desktop computing completely; so much so that friends and co-workers would use terms like “Obsessed” or “Fanatical” when describing my devotion to the pursuit of all things Mac. The PowerMac G3 line at the time, together with Mac OS 8.5.1 was a defining moment for me...all the countless late nights devoted to learning all the hardware and software tricks to keep Windows 95/95/NT/Novell all talking to each other were just a means to keep my corporate network clients up and running. While at work I would set interrupts on cards and deal with never ending blue screens, but my personal computing (done on my own time), would be done on Macs.

Since my background was networking, my interest was in both the hardware and the software.  Our company was both a Novell Gold shop and also a purchaser of liquidated computers, so it was not long before I acquired a single item of almost every Apple computer product produced.  I had my pick of the warehouse, 6000 Square feet of industrial shelves of Macs, PCs, and peripherals that would be resold in bulk (minus what I acquired for my personal collection). This led to a weird affection that developed toward the machines and the Mac operating system itself... like a great art collection, my mac collection was my most prized possession.  It has only been though years of self therapy, that I only keep the computers I use (plus a few or so for backup...hehe).  My biggest past time and hobby has always been music, so naturally my Macs are my greatest assets.

I am a Diehard fan of Macs and Mac OS... I guess i’m not alone :)

... maybe it's my turn...
About myself: one of those guys that find more easy to name what they don't like that what they like.
I have studies on Economy and Physics.
I love science and art, and make music with computers is a way of join both worlds.
I like all musical genres, but not all kind of songs.
I use computers since early 80's. I remember when the Macintosh born. But it was an achievable dream at first. I had to use MS DOS even though knowing that there was a lot of things a lot of better: Atari, Amiga, and the Macintosh. During my studies, I have used Unix and Solaris systems, and later Linux ( I had my own Debian based Linux distro ).

I've used a Next Station, just once, they were impressive at this time. Unfortunatelly they lost some of the things that I liked more, when they become Mac Os X.

I had my first Mac as soon I had the money for it: a Macintosh LC.
Since them I have done a lot of DTP, some music and video edit and mac programing, my first app was a game named Tron ( another iteration of the classic one ). LOL
I'd done some other software development projects, but I'd decided stop this tasks and to focus in to making music.

But I felt like "the last man on earth" with some problems with Cubase 5. At the same time, I saw this forum I thought to my self: finally I had found what I was searching: a Mac Os 9 site and DAW focused.

About Mac Os 9 in short: As more systems I have used and I use, the more I like the Mac Os 9.

... well the remaining things are well known.
Please don't PM about things that are not private.

Was wondering if a thread like this would pop up after someone saw the sub forum on ThinkClassic. Bit different then ThinkClassic, so I will provide different details.

Grew up in the time of my elementary school having Apples, middle school and high school having Mac OS 6 through late OS 8.x and early 9.x machines. Before finishing high school, left Apple/Macintosh a bit (holding onto my Peforma 6400/6500 as long as I could afford multiple computers but ultimately leaving Mac OS behind all together when OS X became the "new os").

Having gotten to play with Windows 3.1 and NT 4.0 all the way through the Windows versions we have today, and many other experiences with Linux/BSD (and many other over the years) along the way..... I still could remember the day I picked up my first new (not hand me down, used, etc) computer. The good old Performa 6400 I enjoyed running Mac OS 7.5 on all the way through to a modified 9.2.0 it was deemed not worthy to run by it's creator. The nostalgia alone, over years culminating a few weeks ago, led me to buy a PowerMac G4 MDD FW800 and a FW400 MDD board to swap in... Only to end up with a complete FW400 as well as someone at work said "Hey, I have one of those if you want it for free)...

People at work know me for a hatred of Mac OS.. In reality, a hatred of what Mac OS became when it got it's "X". "X" just seems like a mistake of all that was good about other non-MicrosoftWindows OSes and even to this day seems like a niche OS that somehow really doesn't have a niche.  ??? Never quite feeling complete, and never feeling as unique or as purely simple as Mac OS did through to 9.2.2.

Today I find myself in forums such as this, looking at running a almost forgotten part of Apple history as Mac OS these days is far from what we were used to in Mac OS 9 and earlier. Ironically, I came to this forum with almost no interest in DAW at all. Just running an old OS that allows me to do things I could easily do on many other more modern operating systems but would never seem the same as the day I did it on the OS I grew up with so long ago.

Installing old apps, games, hardware. I have not purchased so many PCI/AGP cards as I have in the last month. Combining years of knowledge and tech into hardware made almost 13 years ago. I have gotten my FW400 MDD almost to where I want it.. SSD instead of traditional mechanical drive, water cooling (will share images and info if you guys with MDDs want a really quiet MDD for about $50 plus random nuts/bolts).. Once I get it to a point where the hardware is sound and have time to really sit down to work on it for more then an hour or so every few nights, will catch up to what else people in forums like this have been doing with what I think is the only form of Mac OS that ever existed.

Hello all, my name is Duncan.  Found the site through a Google search for OS 9 information.  I've always loved the classic OS, it's a no frills, get the job done kinda deal and I love it for that.  I haven't used it in at least twelve years, but found the need to get back into it lately.  I recently purchased a G3 Wallstreet from '98 (one of the best looking notebooks if you ask me!) recently with OS 9.2.2. installed and I intend on keeping it that way.

I haven't received the machine yet since I ordered it in the US where it has to be sent to family and finally to me, but I look forward to being an active member here on the forums.  Thanks for having me!

Hi from Japan. Long time Mac fanatic here. Started with an LC520 OS7.1 and used Macs ever since. Still have a pile of old Macs including a Color Classic II with an LC550 Mobo and the 13" resolution hardware hack. I've got a 5220, 7500, 7600 a couple of beige G3's and a couple of G4's. A stack of old PowerBooks 100, 145, 150, 520 etc.

I use a Mid 2007 iMac and a White Macbook Core2 Duo, daily. I'm not fond of the fragility of newer Macs.

I play a little bass, and like to DJ. Started practising some live PA on a Roland MC-303 Groove box, an Akai S2000 came my way and Mac OS9 and MESA was the perfect fit. I had a G4 with a SCSI card, so the only hardship was making a system disc on an old PC with a Win boot disc. Presently has a 230 MO dive as a start up disk. I'm just working on the backlight on an Akai S3000XL. New inverter from ebay 12V DC to AC Inverter for EL Lamp, seems to work OK from the internal 12V line. I'm going to use a resistor to dim it down a bit before fitting it permanently.

I'd like information about flashing Sound Cards. It seems there are plenty of good PC ones but not so many for the Mac.

I've go a MIDI Macman, without a power socket on it. Black lettering 1x3 that I haven't used yet.

Just repaired a Roland U-110 sound module, and I also have a Roland MT-120S that does GS. My keyboard is a Roland PC100 Mk II. I've got a Kawai Q80 sequencer that I've got to get my head round.

Ideally I'd like to write on the Mac and load samples, then use the hardware sequencer for performance. I think it's going to need a CF reader to replace the floppy though.

On the USB side I've got an Edirol UM-1 and an Akai LPD8 to play about with on my MacBook.

What I'd like is advice on easy to learn DAW software and moving data into/out of my sequencers and samplers.

Nice to meet you all.

Greetz, all!

I got into Macs in the late 1990s, mostly. My parents bought a Franklin (][ compatible) when I was young, and I tried a Lisa when those were new. Once I was out on my own, I had an Amiga which I liked, a system I finally had some software for. But that box got stolen when I moved. I knew I wanted a Mac, because back then practically all audio and graphics software ran on these. Eventually a kid I worked with wanted to sell a 6200CD, this was my first Mac. What a dog it was, lots of design flaws and only 22kHz sound. But I still liked it. Eventually I bought an 8500 and found a 8100 in the trash and used these. They were both really unstable, probably because of poor RAM choices I didn't know better about. But the 8500 was my first box I got work done with. MacOS 8.6 had just come out. I bought a Studio 4 interface, SVP and Max and started messing around. Eventually my SVP keydisk got borked and I switched to LAP4.7. I especially liked the many weird academic programs for Mac hosted at universities and such.

By 2001-2002 my 8500 was retired and replaced with an B&W, which was a huge improvement. Through the 2000s I had a bit of money so got a few different eras of Macs to play with. SE, 2ci, 8600. I also enjoyed running my fastest OS9 machines. My 1GHZ TiBook, which is great but a bit delicate, and a few MDD machines. I love the MDD, but I have had problems keeping them cool and quiet. With every drive and slot loaded, and dual 1.42GHZ CPUs, they seem to cook themselves after a few years. I had a project a few years back to make the ultimate MDD tower which was liquid cooled and with a GeForce 4600Ti but I lost my job and ran out of money.

These days I am skating by doing multimedia art and designing gear. Just getting back into things after a rough patch of the past few years. Hoping for more old-school Mac antics over the next year!

LOL! I haven't even done an intro over at ThinkClassic yet. Most everybody there knows me from the four distinct lifetimes I've spent hacking my way through three different iterations of the 68kMLA forums and two iterations of 'fritter's forums. I followed iMic over here to watch the goings on in the Native9 on unsupported hardware thing. So bear with me, I think I'm finally gonna cut it loose:

Sig says a lot. Did vector graphics in my skull and by hand with digits, crayons, pencils, pens, brushes and all manner of really sharp edged nastiness dating from pre-K days when I'd lay on the living room floor of the farmhouse, copying the engineering drawings in my dad's textbooks "helping him do his homework."

< OMG! snip-snip-slash-n-burn >

edited: spent the late Eighties in a whirlwind of Basic on Trash80 under CPM -> C64 (with FDD!) mostly playing Red Baron -> Tandy 1000sx and Ashton-Tate's Framework -> ThunderScanning from a used ImageBanger WC into the 512k bundled with it at home -> production on an SE/Radius16 -> used IIx specifically bought to hold up a bargain basement 19" B&W TPD (really B/W, seriously, just two bits!) and as the launch pad for a planned Radius Rocket 33 purchase and all running under a max of 6.0.8 until core software requirements dragged me kicking and screaming the entire way into the bug-fix dotted early Nineties World of 7.0.1  .  .  .  hrmmm, do we see what appears to be the beginnings of a trend there?

< EEK! snip-slash-edit-edit-edit >

By the Mid-Nineties I decided I needed a backup for the IIx/Rocket right in the middle of a huge job, just in case. So over to Tekserve I trekked to buy that fully loaded Quadra_630 from my buddies with a free upgrade to something called 7.5  .  .  .  and - there - I - stayed  .  .  .  until I was dragged a long and circuitous route (again, kicking and screaming all the way) through machines and software requirements until I finally threw my hands up in disgust. I pulled my hair out by the roots all the way on the train ride downtown to buy a boxed copy of OS 9.0 to let a clean install of ANYTHING different deal with the horrid AOL thrashed mess that had become of the 7.5.5 install on the drive of my refurbed Performa_6360/SonnetG3.

That made the slide into the stock 9.1 install on my brand spankin' new G4/466 Digital Audio nice-n-easy! ;D

< phew! >

Bought a Box with one X on the side just to see what hoopla was all about  .  .  .  :o

OMFG!!!!!!  ???  Right back into the box it went and there it stayed after I drew a big XXX over the original one. :P

There's not a single program or feature that's come along since that day to pull me and my many thousands of dollars worth of licensed Graphics a/o hardkeyed CAD/CAM software out of my happy little Native9 bubble.

Though I did just buy a retail copy of 10.4.whatever off eBay for fixing acquired machines sorely in need of the Faux9 install their owners neglected to do, while still having the sense to hold it down to the 10.4.11 level.  :-\

WWW access has been unmercifully restricted to WiFi and WAN equipped NetBooks under strictest quarantine. Zip250 is my SneakerNet medium of choice, heck, I haven't even had the Mac Network set up for over five years.

Welcome :)

We will help you get back into an MDD that won't cook itself.  For Audio, under a pure OS 9 environment, most of us prefer a single CPU (since most apps don't use the dual capability), since it runs cooler, also an SSD (or IDE DOM) as the main boot and work drive really keeps the temp down and a large partitioned PATA/IDE for Extra storage.  We can help you Quiet one down quite a bit with the right fans without sacrificing too much on CFM values.  And these days ebays is giving away MDDs so snatch one up :)

Without sounding X-aPhobic, many here still appreciate what 9 has to offer.  We have been focusing on stretching that bubble to the Max. with advancements in the backup and recovery arena (with Apple ASR Apple Software Restore), Applying hardware advancements (SSD, DOM, and SATA Firmware, and 64 Bit PCI testing), and lastly, running Mac OS on unsupported hardware.  Although our core user group consists of Musicians and audio recording enthusiasts, we are growing into a larger community.... we welcome you and more to come :)

THX! The X-oPhobe RPG suits as part of my online persona and to tell the truth, I really am a n00b there because I've consciously chosen to ignore OSX. I don't think there were many who came up from System 6.0.or so that didn't have that WT  .  .  .  ??? :o first reaction to that buggy b!^<# when it first shipped. I hear it's gotten better. ;)

It goes without saying that were I to be doing graphics/production work today, I'd be hip deep in OSX, new apps a/o newer revs of my core apps with new features in a heartbeat.

Investigating where 9 crosses the line into X and then that again crosses into an X that will support non-commercial Blu-ray over FW400 would be one of my current time-sinks. It sure would be nice if a solution for backward compatibility for DVD or even just CD could be coaxed out of said peripheral under OS9. For the rest there's always another drive to boot from a/o an alternate machine's I/O panel.

This is likely the best place I've found for that particular kind of nitty-gritty. I'm glad to be here.

Hello,

This is my first post.  I registered in february to this amazing place of yours which I heard/read about on macint0shgarden basically  - following a user with a nick ending with 777 which seems to be quite active in here as well ;).  I thought I could contribute at that point, and me and a friend of mine were at the time trying to get the most out of a G3 of his.  For some reason, I thought I needed to wait a second email for some sort of acceptance.. or approval from the website.. and then I forgot about it... and now I'm back 10 months later figuring out that I could have been participating all this time.
So now I guess I should introduce myself.  In some ways I would present myself as somewhat of a starving musician... but since I just ate and can't seem to play any instruments for the last few months, that doesn't make much sense.  Let's just say
that I want to get back at it and that making a good OS9 music machine seems like a good idea (especially since all I have are G4s) ;)
I used to produce OK music using that same, even lower-end, material, so hey that should be feasible, right?
Anyways, I stumbled here at the same time that I was trying to clean up my old OS 9 archives. As well maintained as my archives are.. you'd still get a few hundred VSTs from different sources all mixed up weirdly from various Hotline or even Carracho servers.  That part is a mess, but I'm sure there are a few interesting things in there...  I'll cross-check with yours ;)
I hope that I can be helpful in any way here and can't wait to be a part of your discussions.
     Saluting all of you :).

OK, I can't stop reading posts here.  You guys are making an amazing job... the ASR thing, tricking OF on a FW800, some guy doing a max patch for an app on OS 7.5.5....  it's just pure goodness all over the place. :D

The weird part is that I'm here using Tiger on a dual boot..  :-[
I hope that I can read all that as easily with the classila I got here on my 9 partition; that would make it perfect.

Anyways, kudos to all of you!

Ive always had a fascination with music and computers, but not till I was around 15-16 did I start making music on computers. I think it was around the age of 7 that I got my first computer. It was a MAC!! It was a old mac that was given away from the office my grandfather worked in. As soon as I turned it on it had an error (the frowning mac face) My mother threw the Manuel at me and told me to read it. Next thing i know the computer was fixed and running great. Fast forward 10 years and I was stuck on windows because of the cost differences. I soon learned how horrible windows COULD be. So I began teaching myself about fixing them. Then after getting my first job my lust for music gear took over. The more I learned about making music on a computer the more I started to recognize how many people were using mac for production. Now I got just as many macs as I do PC's! Ive used mac linux and windows.  Linux is great for hacking I really couldn't find much more use for a Linux machine other than that lol. Hands down mac will always be my choice for music. I currently work with hardware synths and vinyl records for samples. I also have projects with rap artists and even house music DJ's. I have a passion for all types of music. I mostly produce rap instrumentals but I am working on a solo experimental album too.

My Name Is Jorge and I am from Spain. I work as a P.A. sound tech since '97 and bought my first DAW in '98. I have been a Win user since Win 3.1.1 and OS9 user since '02. I had the honor to see working some of the best engineers/editors in Spain (one Grammy awarded) on macs since 98, and had worked on studios with ADAT and Reel 16 tracks analog recorders and 4 tracks since '97. I am trying lo learn to play the guitar since '92  ;D  I bought my Yamaha 4track cassette on '95.

Hi all... ermmmm... (scratches head) ok... hello... is this thing working? Of course it is lol. even medi-evil roadies can wire up a P.A... surely one do I say, one do I say, then surely two should follow.

My name's ed. Currently in the middle of Wales though my home still belongs in Yorkshire. I am a blind musician, composer and music producer who relies on older technoloigies, old school methods, etc to get the job done. I don't follow the latest tech trends other than what's truly accessible for me, speech wise anyway.  I qualified with a masters degree in professional audio and a royal graduate degree in classical music, Guild hall honours for piano and play church organ when there's time or whenever I find a nice cozy church while on the road.

I've done a fair bit of sound design and sound programming over the years for different synths and samplers but mainly touring with bands or session work and of course working in studios as a recording engineer besides my own setup.

I like challenges in life. I always believe in a bit of excitement to keep the heart beating and the fire circulating through me lol.

At the moment, undergoing a studio rebuild after a disaster 6 months back. I was guided to here because of my search for protools software, etc for OS9 and I have to say, with thanks to contributors here, I've found the plugins, ProTools TDM 5.13, etc to help get a G3 back up and running. Just facing a struggle finding the hardware. Anyway I've placed an ad in the wanteds side of here which explains more.

It feels like a nice home here and I'm sure if anyone needs my help, I'm more than willing to share what I've got knowledge wise, etc.

many thanks to the mods for allowing me to join this merry band of apple heros lol.

ok i guess i should tell some info about me..
My Name is Chris (obviously)
one of my first big interests in music began with hiphop in 1987 when a friends dad tape-dubbed me his vinyl of "RUN DMC - Raising hell" I was a hiphop addict from 1987-1992 but in 1993 i started getting more into house music + rave parties happening in Toronto In 1997 I started buying house vinyls + by 1999 i had my first dj gig in toronto, I dj'd alot there from 1999-2005 paying my bills from djing for awhile.. my first exposure to audio production was back around 1997 aswell, when a friend + i teamed up to work on some tracks in his studio.. his studio was robbed and we lost our 8 tracks or so that i had done all the rhythm + percussion programming for.. my friend decided to get into djing aswel instead of rebuilding his studio... since then i always wanted to get a studio back together... fond memories of his juno 60 + programming rhythms in cubase (i think it was version 3.0) around 2002 i bought a copy of reason 2.0 and since then i was trying to wrap my head around production, notes, rhythms.. professionally i was also a webdesigner working for many ad agencies in Toronto between 1999-2005 working on some well known brands

ive dedicated my time here in order to help other people like myself who have a yearning to produce music, to find a way to make the intangible become tangible.. dreams into reality..  ;)

likes: 80s music, disco, soul, jazz, r&b, hiphop, house, occasionally some techno, electro, and even some jungle;) (note to knez: NO GABBER!)

my first mac was a performa 6400 in around 1997... i was a hotline user.. and i was big into photoshop + illustrator + collecting typefaces.. i was a flash animation designer beginning with macromedia director and flash v3.0 after having been inspired by the work of Hillman Curtis (rip) i was so involved with graphics + animation + web coding that i never got a chance to even look at any of the great apps that we have here when they were current.

alot of my own music that i created with reason (v2.5 - v5.0) left me kind of dissatisfied.
tracks would always start out great and then once i added too many elements would fall apart..
i guess this could be lack of mixing skill, but i also tended to blame the mixer + the software a bit, and i was looking for a better mix... which is what led me to become obsessed with educating myself on all the ins + outs of the other software packages.. but alot of the music i appreciate was really old frm the time when i was around 16 years old.. so i knew it could be done with old stuff. thats what keeps me looking to the past, rather then buying the latest newest gear.

heres a web archive backup of my site from early 2000

Hey Kids... Wanted to stop by and say Hi! Found this place while in the mist of putting together a ProTools TDM system... 9.2.2 on a G4 dual 500. First Mac ('87-ish) was a Mac Plus running Performer synced to a reel to reel, then 2  RTR's... later partnered with a friend building up a studio... pre-Pro Tools Pro Tools/ADATs ... currently HDX.  Needing to record at home I would travel back and forth with a Roland VS1680 then got 001 on a G4 400 which made it easy.

Computer skills are on the basic side... normal MO is to get something up and running then don't change ANYTHING till forced by gun point!! ;D

Anyway... this site is AWESOME! Thanks to all here and hope to be able to contribute SOMETHING along the way!  ;D

Hi friends,

Diego here - italian living in Berlin, Germany - been around music and computer for 15ish years - as studio assistant, musician, sound engineer, all around geek, etc. I used various versions of Pro Tools from 5.1.3 TDM on - I'm on PT11 right now then one day I've found this mix + system on my local classifieds and here I am.

The first Mac I owned was a G4 733 digital audio which, despite the fancy name - had nothing to do with any audio production application - it was deceptively called digital audio because of a dedicated audio out you could use to connect expensive designer branded speakers. well ya apple is a big marketing machine but they got us the best computers ever so long live OS9.

My beige G3 age was covered with Pentium 2 233 hardware and a Guillemot Isis soundcard that came with Logic 3.6ProIsis with Direct X plugings and 16 tracks (could record 8 at a time with 4 outputs and a GM soundset from roland sound canvas as a onboard synth).
I then bought a new PC, a Athlom 1400 and a Terratec DMX6fire 24/96 to record on Logic 5.5.1. Then I bought a G3B&W and an Audiomedia3 and 2 Rage128 GL pci cards (one with the decoder). That thing take me to Protools.
I bought a second AM3 just when PT-Mpowered was enunciated in the market to use with a Pentium 4. Then a Pentium D, an AP 24/96 to use elastic audio from protools 7.4 MP . At that time a G4 DA 466 was donated to me and I tried PT6 with the audiomedia, but the rage 128 AGPx4 did not helped much, and that setup was way more powerful and stable on OS9 as the G3. Then a 001 was donated with a Logic Xskey and I thought it could come in handy to upgrade the 466 G4 and I bought a QS'02 dual GHz CPU for it. When the forum started, I received donated a 866 MDD from an offer of that MDD with an HD2 setup for 50 Euros! I got the MDD free and my Madrid friend a HD2 for 50 Euros. I work now in PT HD 9.0.4 on a Intel Q6600 core2Quad overclocked at 3.15 with an focusrite Liquid Saphire 56 and a UAD-1 PCI on 10.6.8. And that is my story in last 15 years related to DAWs and machines.

Hi guys,

Born in the mid '80s, I remember the Macintosh SE my dad purchased from the only store in Madrid that carried Macintosh computers. A 145B Powerbook with black and white flat display soon followed. I also remember listening to records day in and day out in the Norwegian HI-FI receiver my dad had imported from USA. Those first pressings of Roberta Flack, Bee-Gees, Antonio Carlos Jobim....that huge, creamy sound from those JBL monitors.

In recent years, I have put together a small 8-track studio (1-inch tape to Pro Tools) that I am very fond of. My main setup has included 442 Digidesign interfaces, English outboard mixers, multitrack analog recorder, nice preamps and Ensoniq Paris. Have been recording music for 8 years, I sing and play the acoustic guitar. Have had a few tracks produced by American producer Bradley Fish. Currently recording/producing my solo debut project.

Software collector, every rare treasure I have found has been shared with the community (Pro Tools 1 complete floppy set, Pro Tools 2.05, Pro Tools 4.2, Cubase VST/24 4.0 CD iso...) and will continue to do so. Consider myself a chilled out guy, aware that this music is not my gift. I am just channeling ;)

Loooove vintage software. Have been using Cubase DAE for years with my 442 interfaces, sweeeeeet spot. One of my favourites engines for 68k for sure. Also enjoy VST/24 4.1 (far superior than the VST/32 Mac port from the Windows code). Yes, this is true.

Currently own too many computers: My main rig is a PT II NuBus inside a PPC 7100/80 that was maxed out + Audiomedia II card with SDII.

Ensoniq Paris 3.0 runs inside my Power Mac G4 (Yikes! Of course) alonside a d24 card with Pro Tools 24 connected to an Apogee AD-8000 Special Edition converter. On the road I use a Powerbook Titanium G4 500Mhz I am VERY fond of with a Motu 828 interface + Apogee Mini-Me converter. And preamps, of course.

If you make music, I would LOVE to hear it!

Enjoy!!

Hello there!

My name is André Paixao , i'm 29yo and i'm from a little town called Santarem in Portugal!

I've been around PC's since I know how to walk and always dealt with Wintel only, never touched a mac until 4 months ago. Got a new job and here we deal with everything, Mac included. Decided to ser what the hell was the fuss about Mac OS and installed OS X on my PC, a Core i5 machine but that didn't sounded right, so i bought a old G3 B&W, and gave it a good test run. The B&W is equiped with a Sonnet G4 upgrade card at 1GHz, but after a few weeks the slowliness of it made me want to try the original software the machine came bundled: OS 8. Version 8.6 was all that I could find on-line but is kinda of a mess to get networking up and running, so I am hellbent on trying OS 9 on it!
By the way, I've also bought a couple of more Macs... A case and motherboard of a G4(Yikes!) that I've transplanted a CPU, psu, ram, graphics card and HDD from a G3 B&W I've bought with a dead mobo, but the board I have from the g4 isn't stable though. Also have a beige g3 with a dead CPU and mobo.
The G3 I have working is a Rev1 board, and the G3 dead board I have is a Rev2.
Does anyone know if swapping the dead Rev 2 mobo IDE CMD chip to the working Rev 1 mobo would be making a Rev 2 out of a Rev 1 mobo? I'm a electronic technician and have facilities to do the swap, but would it work???

Best regards and sorry for the messy post, was written on my cell phone while in the hospital bored to my skull

dont bother trying to transplant the ide controller.. that would be too dificult.
i have a B&W g3 and what i would reccommend to u is to get either a PCI-sata card or a acard 6880M/6280M IDE controller
this really increases the performance of the g3.. because it jumps it frm ATA33 all the way up (past ATA66, ATA100) to ATA133 (or sata150 for the pci sata card)

in my g3 B&W i have this acard 6880M with two hard drives working together as one
the acard 68xx cards have raid ability via dipswitch.. the acard 62xx cards have no raid but just provide normal ports
either one is great.. u can find a 62xx card for like 20$ on ebay shipped from japan or hongkong
that is what i suggest for u

I see... Better to remove the bottleneck by avoiding the whole integrated IDE subsystem... Gotta get me some RAID action just for kicks...

Got another question about OS but will search for the anwser first if it is avaiable

exactly right! circumvent the bottleneck u got it  8)
the 6880M is a great match for this machien because it supports mac os 8.6 aswell (similar to teh system itself)

the 6885M offers better speeds but doesnt support 8.6 aswell as the 6880M

and tbh the silicon image sata150 cards work fantastic with a sata3 80gb drive
u get 100MB/s read + write form a single drive that is cheaper then an ssd

Hello! Used to love tracking in the Amiga days, moved to mactel/logic eventually. Never had a mac since 2008, however I always looked up to the old G4/G5 PPCs (couldn't afford one back then)! Only recently I got a G4 sawtooth and am trying to get started with fooling around OS9.2.2!

Hello there!

My first time ever seeing ProTools at a studio (1996) left me impressed after having been used to the analog stuff for long. There was some functionality in the interface that I have not seen in recent software. You could create a wave and apply real time effects, so you could have on a same track different effects as each portion of a wave rendering could be sliced and have radically different effects in them. I have an old Korg Oasys PCI card which I bought second hand in 2002 on e-bay from Andy West (at one point Dixie Dregs bass player!) and there were never drivers for XP or OSX as the card was a financial flop for Korg and got quickly discontinued. I gave this card a home briefly on a Windows 98 box and then upgraded the OS and so on. Then after a while I wanted to give this card a permanent home so I've got a dual 1.25 MDD on Craigslist and realized a few shortcomings in the software department  :( I happen to own Cubase 32 VST 5 (parallel port dongle and all) but it is for PC. Yet I was hoping the dongle would work on a Mac too. Anyhow, hello to everyone, here I am hoping to get some direction in this endeavor!

Regards from FL and thank you for making such amount of valuable info available and creating this awesome virtual meeting place!

Hi there. Long time Mac user going back to the early 1990s. My first Mac was a IIci, my most recent a 15' 2012 MacBook Pro (the last Apple laptop with user expandable RAM). In between I've owned everything from a PowerBook 180 to a Umax Powertower 180 clone - I buy all my computers second hand and modify them to requirements. I'm also a former Apple certified hardware, software and help desk technician, with a specialty in Mac audio - though that was about 10 years ago and I'm no longer in IT. I still make music though, mostly in Ableton and Logic Pro on my MacBook.

About a month ago a neighbour was putting out their kerbside rubbish when I spied a Titanium Powerbook. He confirmed it was being thrown out so I took it home and lo and behold it fired up on MacOS 10.4 and told me it was the 1GHz model with 768MB RAM. Remembering that this was the last and fastest Powerbook that could 'officially' run MacOS 9 I did some Googling and found this site. Downloaded a few different installer images and proceeded to wipe the drive and install MacOS 9. I hadn't looked at this OS for at least 10 years so the memories came flooding back - Extensions! Control Panels! Chooser! Happy days. I'd forgotten how snappy the OS is and how the 'curved' 3D user interface really helps speed up navigation compared to modern 'flat' UI design. The only wrinkle is that this laptop has a busted USB port that was shorting the logic board.  I've fixed the short, which doesn't seem to have affected reliability but the laptop won't load Apple Hardware Test or other model-specific installers.

Anyway, I'd thrown out my MacOS 9 audio software years ago (anyone remember Hotline?) so it was great to see all the old favourites again - Logic 4.8, Ableton Live 4, Pro 53, Imposcar and of course Rebirth. I've now got a great setup where all sequencing is done on Ableton 9 in the Macbook and sent via MIDI to the Powerbook running Ableton 4 , which hosts VSTi's and receives Rebirth audio via Rewire.  This audio is then mixed down to about 10 channels  and sent back to the Macbook via two MOTU 828s connected via lightpipe and coax SPDIF.  Rock solid and sounds fantastic - no need for loads of outboard gear anymore (though I won't be selling my Moog Sub 37 anytime soon).

So finally a heartfelt thanks to those who set up and maintain this site. I think it's a real achievement to have consolidated so much knowledge in one place and not allow it to be lost. Any questions please fire away, but in the meantime I'll be tweaking some 303s in Rebirth...

Yeah - it's so well laid out and flexible. I think it's the best synth package Moog have put together since the minimoog (big call I know). All the knobs transmit CC and NRPN, and you can also separate the panel from the sound engine. This means it's easy to set up a midi channel switcher in Logic or Ableton  to control which synth (real or virtual) is controlled by the panel.

Thank you Mr Happy, DieHard and everyone who's contributing to the cause!

Was able to follow the instructions and I'm truly impressed!!!

I was incidentally wondering if you were familiar with Nemesys Gigasampler (then bough and brought down by Tascam). It was a great sampler.

Haven't started doing any music yet but tested synths and all.

AMAZING!!!

Have only 768 megs of RAM. I'm sure it will improve by doubling it. I might have some RAM laying around somewhere in the garage.

Can't wait to read about the water cooled solutions someone said were possible for less than $50 as this is at the moment the only drawback with my MDD setup.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!

u are fine with 768mb of ram.. u dont need any more ram..
mac os 9 performance does not increase with more ram for most people
most people think more = better.. and it usually is.. but if u were to put a g4 of the same type
with 768 mb ram.. vs one with 1gb. vs one with 1.5gb.. there would be little difference in the performance.
like.. unnoticable difference. as long as u have 512mb ram + u are ok with mac os 9
512mb ram was TONS of ram in 98/99.. to put it in perspective.. mac os 9 was from the time period of win98 and windows 98 cant use more then 512mb of ram in fact it wont boot with more installed.

Hello everyone!

I've been a lurker for quite some time and figured I should just become a member already!

My name is Nathan, I'm 34 years old, and from the MS Gulf Coast. Currently I'm a self-employed web developer and write/produce music on the side.  I've used Apple computers my entire life starting with the Apple IIe, then became obsessed with Macs at what I consider an appropriate age.

I love the Classic Mac OS. There is just something about it that speaks to me. (Perhaps it's simply nostalgia, but it just feels more than that.) Obviously, I'm not the only one. :)

However, I don't hate Mac OS X. I love it as well. Particularly 10.2 - 10.6. Beyond Snow Leopard, I am quickly becoming less enchanted with the direction Apple is taking OS X.

I'm looking forward to being a contributing member of this insanely great community!
(I couldn't resist the "insanely great" reference.. don't judge me!)

Just put 2 out of 4 Mac Pros down to 10.6.8 and Logic 9.1.8, The Mavericks, Yosemite file transfer lag and a bunch of bugs in Logic X and bring me down :( and "El Captain" for music is "El Crap-tain"

SL and Logic 9 is the Intel equivalent to Mac OS 9 and a vintage DAW in the stability department

Hello,

Hi! Here´s Ale from Argentina. I´m a musician, composer and arranger. I make my living doing string arrangements, music for films, jingles, and the like. I´m a songwriter too, and produce my own recordings since i was fifteen. I love vintage hardware and stuff and one of my hobbies is to record myself on my old trusty Tascam 414 4-Track cassette Portastudio. I´m a PowerPC enthusiast and i think PPC Macs are the best computers ever made. Have three of them: 1,67 gHz PowerBook G4, 800mHz iBook G4, and 1gHz Titanium PB G4. Don´t have much experience with OS 9 but i´ve recently installed it on the Ti Book and it seems to be a very nice platform for audio purposes. By the way, this community is awesome and i´m learning a lot here!

Hey and hello!

I have been with the forum for a while, but have not yet introduced myself.

I was born in Switzerland, but have lived in Austria for decades now. I got into Macs very early with the SE. Then there was a pause. When audio production without extra PT hardware became a reality around '96, my interest for Apple Mac returned.

I bought Logic Platinum twice, once around '99 and then again incrementally up until 2005 or so. I still have a lot of licenses for OS9, and since Emagics MIDI timing still has to be beaten, I have stuck with my "old" setup.

Although I have collected a lot of software for OS9 back in the day, I have still discovered new things in this forum. Quite a bit of which I still have to try out! :-)

So happy sharing, everybody. It's good to know there are other dinosaur lovers out there.

Hello everyone,
I joined a couple of weeks ago - realized tonight that its time I said "hey". I'm just a keyboard hobbyist who stumbled on An old clamshell at a thrift store and thought it might open up some new and interesting midi avenues. I'm quite surprised to find that so many other people are interested in working with the vintage stuff, it's going to make this just that much more fun. Until later,
JaPP

Hi,
 Glad to be here.
I composed a long message and sent it to Diehard, If he gets it he can post it. Aparrently I hit the wrong button (again),
Thanks, Bill kennick

NP Bill... Here it is :)

Hi,
Back in 1971 I was paying big bucks to use a Univac programming in Fortran. Later I bought an Intel 4004 chipset and had some precocious kid try to build me a computer, $500 lost for a box of parts. Finally I got a Heathkit and switched to BASIC and HDOS. Upgraded to an 8086 chip. First 16K of memory cost $400. Had something called  Zenith Electronic typing which was almost as good as Word. Any way, I had and built maybe 50 computers. I once put Yellow Dog Linux on an Imac and have recently built a Hackintosh (but everything has to be USB or it won't work. What brings me here is I am trying to get my Korg keyboard to input into a midi file. It used to work on the Quadra and the Performa but now I am stuck with USB etc etc. Oh, I use Fedora22 on a new box and also windows 7 for "photoshopping" with Gimp.
I like Windows XP for video. Somehow I got it to run on a new box. I don't  know how exactly.. I  am going to have to set up something for video capture when Mars comes around again next spring. I guess my real regret is that I never learned assembly language (and binary). I have a fourteen year old son (who knows just about everything there is to know) who told me that midi files are old fashioned. But I am thinking of doing Hungarian Rhapsody No. 5 on the piano keyboard and then correcting the mistakes in MIDI. This for my daughters Ballet teacher. I had better get this done before I grow more senile than I am already. I like to buy computers at the "trailing edge" of technology when they are about 90 percent cheaper. But I did build 3 new boxes (actually, new motherboard, old hard drives, old cdroms, old tower boxes. My wife tells me that when I die they are going to have to rent a dumpster and throw away my boxes and boxes of old rs-232 cables , parallel interface cables. etc. What am looking for and cant find is all my old apple transport cables. I used to put old beige g3s in gamer's tower boxes. Anyway I would be a lot more financially solvent if I had taken up another hobby than electronics, but ever since I took apart my mother's telephone and then put it back together before she got home (with some parts left over) I have been more or less hooked on taking apart machines that run on electricity. Sorry to say that the new cell phones leave me cold. The best I can do there  is take out the battery so that my wife wont bother me when I'm busy..

Hi guys ,this is Nick from Greatinterface still chugging away on several 1,25 g4s using logic 4,7 can get a bit sticky running 24 trks with too many plugins and virtual synths but I still love it ,was considering getting a couple of unitors for sync run ,audio on one machine and synths on the other . the little mt4s really cleaned up my midi as I used to have a lot of probs with the motu midi timepiece and that extra layer of software formerly known as OMS ,now banished . By the way I am the guy who clarified the no more than 1 gig of ram problem with logic in Os 9 ,was there ever a work around for that ? Anyway  another on going quest is to truly be able to CLONE a drive ,I have asked you Os 9 GODS about this before and of coarse its easy to move all files from one drive to another and make a bootable copy but that does not bring up the old desk top or my nicely arranged program icons ,I am still missing something .I guess I need Carbon copy or similar  have looked on the site but cant seem to find it ,any suggestions . Thanks for all the great archiving and all that you have done to provide support to all the other os9 diehards out there
                                 all the best
                                    Nick

Welcome Niok!

I have something here that might be just what you're looking for. It's intended to remember and reset your desktop when you change monitor resolutions but it might work for you. Your problem is probably NOT that you're cloning / moving drives, but that you're ending up on a different monitor. This app simply remembers the positions and such of all things on your desktop, then restores them on command. It might help... who knows?

Got it, thanks will try it ,but do you think it would solve the original cloning problem if I booted in osx ,ran an osx version of ccc and then changed the startup drive to os9 on the new drive .I am running on a MDD 1.25 with a nice clean system built from the original restore discs which set up for dual boot with all my os 9 stuff totally smooth .I could build a new drive and reinstall everything but i wanna clone

I think you can use Apple's DiskCopy and ASR to archive best results!
It even should preserve many Software Activations and i think desktop appearance too.

Download it from the forum.

I first used a Mac at work in the last 80s - a Plus with system 5 I think. This was totally different to any other computer I'd used, and soon fell in love with it.
My first (and last) brand new Mac purchase was in 1994 - a Performa 475 which still sees use today.
The most modern Mac I own is a G4 933, whilst I'm writing this on a PM8500 running my favourite OS - 8.1. It all started to go down hill after that....
I've tried using alternative OSs but they just annoy me.
I use my Macs for all sorts of things, but mainly for data processing tasks. My audio escapades are limited to creating some alerts via the built-in microphone!
I've been reading the forum for a while but think this is my first post. I would use it more if it was more Mac web browser friendly....

Hello From the Pacific Northwest.  I cut my teeth on an Atari ST running Cubase, then later moved to a Performa.  I recently literally dug a MDD out the trash and got it running.  I am very grateful for this resource as I find most new systems too bloated to get any real work done. Thanks again!

I just realized I never really posted in this thread to introduce myself.

Hi!

My first experience with a Mac was also my first experience with a computer and it was on a Mac TV.  What a odd, limited machine that was. I still use it today for some midi things just for nostalgic purposes.

Next I got a Clamshell iBook and started doing recording on that with Cubase.  Since then I've pretty much kept up with getting on of every major change in the iBook line.

So there is my Mac history.

Hi macos9lives! Glad I stumbled across this forum. I've been producing eletronica since the late 90's.  Had an old Mix|24 in the early 2000's and loved it! Rock solid platform on an old G4 MDD with OS9.2.2. Couldn't be happier to find a group of like-minded individuals who are keeping this great OS alive and kicking.  -afro-

Heavens, I never did inroduce myself and I've been lurking for so long!

I've been a Mac user since I bought my iMac G3 700 in 2001 (and it still works!).  Over time, my little collection has grown to include:

1. The first one--iMac G3 700 MHz
2. PowerBook G4 that I regrettably sold
3. iBook G3 900 MHz that fell victim to the infamous logic board failure
4. PowerMac G4 Digital Audio 733 MHz
5. PowerMac G5 dual 2.0 GHz
6. Intel Mac mini core i5 (mid 2011) with the Radeon graphics

I actually found this site thanks to MacRumors and their equally wonderful PowerPC forum.  And since my G5 is now running 10.5 and my mini runs El Cap, I decided to use my G4 DA for Mac OS 9 use only.  In fact, I'm posing from it using Classilla.

I am also a licensed music teacher and use a lot of specialized software for Mac, some of which I am trying to find a least an equivalent under OS 9.  This forum is a GODSEND for someone like me.  :D

I do when using OS8.6+ machines, like today when I'm on a G4 400. But it's not my first choice, due mainly to slow speed and high memory requirements. It would be nice if IE wasn't blocked from this site....
