Author Topic: Anyone succesfully running Opcode Studio Vision 4.5.1 on G4 Mac Mini?  (Read 1384 times)

I'm getting crashes up the wazoo.  I have OMS installed as well as my audio/midi drivers.  I either crash with error 3, or I get a dialog about multiple instances of OMS not being allowed (and then crashing).

Just hoping someone is doing this and can give some pointers on setup.

The fact you have a Mini doesn't matter. Error 3 is a catchall number for an "illegal instruction" which simply means that you or some piece of software told the Mac to do something it can't or shouldn't do. That often, as you're seeing, results in a crash.

The "multiple instances" of OMS dialog pops up when:
1) There actually is more than one copy of OMS on the computer.
2) When two apps try to use OMS simultaneously.
3) When OMS is installed incorrectly.

#3 is usually the culprit. OMS requires that it gets put in the correct place in System Extensions AND that other little bits and pieces be put in proper places as well. That's why, back in the day, Opcode packaged OMS with a foolproof installer app. These days however, there are a zillion copies of OMS floating around "loose".

I can only take wild guesses at what's going on with your Mini when the only info I have is
"I have OMS installed as well as my audio/midi drivers"
I also don't know how much you know or don't know  about OMS and SVP.

So, my best idea is that you begin by learning as much as possible about OMS and,
If you can't find an obvious issue, then you delete ALL things OMS or at least move them into a temp folder somewhere while you reinstall a fresh OMS from scratch using the actual OMS Installer App. That way you end up knowing everything is in its proper place.
Why? Because installing OMS and creating your Studio Setup is the first thing that needs to be done and done correctly. It's the foundation for ALL things MIDI from then on and if it's done correctly, it will treat you really well.

To that end, I've attached the OMS manual and the OMS installer in case you don't have them.
Let us know how it goes.

Hey Gary, thanks for the info.

I ended up blowing away everything and starting over using your files, and now I'm up and going.
thank you!

Only thing I haven't been able to figure out is how to integrate the Vision keyboard layout file.  Not a big deal though.

Good to hear it's working for you.
The Vision keyboard file is a "KCHR" resource for reassigning the keyboard keys to different uses. It's similar to having a second language installed where the keys do different characters that plain old English. It was supposed to be useful for writing sequences using Notation with symbol sets that never really got developed. There is also a keyset named "Fermata" that is used to literally type music notation onto a staff if you're really writing music.

Looking under the Setups/Commands Menu, you see that virtually everything and anything can be assigned to keys using Command, Option, Shift-Option etc. combinations. That ability pretty much covers ANY custom / personal workflow you can dream up so don't sweat the Vision key file. Un-modified, it's identical to the "US" layout.
