AudioMedia III Driver
« on: October 30, 2024, 07:56:00 AM »

Just picked up an AudioMedia III card for a spare Mac. Will use it to edit stuff and for playback purposes. Is there a particular driver for it? I believe there is also something like the DigiDesign Control Panel where you can use System Audio with it. I just checked on the old DigiDesign archives and the entire thing is down. Maybe they nuked all of their old files?

Also, what is the AudioMedia III compatible with? On top of Sound Designer, I believe there are free versions of Pro Tools, as well as PT4 or PT5 that has a 'DAE Powermix' mode where you can utilize the AMIII card.

AM III supports certain protools apps, digidesign direct in/out, soundmanager and ASIO.

so it supports finder, games, every possible player and also all pro audio apps except PT TDM.

SpectraFoo has direct support for it.

Brilliant Waves MultiRack application. It can host a bunch of Waves Plug-Ins for real time processing and, with the File I/O Plug-In it can record and play back. I've done all sorts of tricks with it. Supports automation.
Back in the day when audio hardware cost real money, it was one of the few apps that could guarantee clean 24 bit playback (Motorola 56xxx is a fixed point) and was a cost effective solution for two DAW work

I don't think so.
Syntho asked "what is the AudioMedia III compatible with". SpectraFoo and MultiRack are two compatible applications that are rarely mentioned.

Are there specific drivers/extensions somewhere? I'd need the Digidesign Control Panel too. Digidesign seems to have taken down their archives with all the files.

i just dont bring multirack and OS9 together, as well as 24 bit and AMIII, but what do i know.

and yeah, normally here should be the place where people collect such drivers. :) right now there are about 3-5 drivers in the download section, so your best bet is google.

i used this stuff decades ago and cant remember how it went: wasn´t the card driver itself simply installed by dsi/dae? our protools people must answer this.

then as for ASIO, this is an extra file.

though as noted above some programs support this card "directly" - including logic and vision.

Cubase Audio Mac v3.04+ XT for DAE/TDM (1996)
Cubase VST Mac 3.5.0 (System 7) (1997), 3.5.1 ( Mac OS 8 ), 3.5.2 (1997) ( Stable in Mac OS 8 )

as well

the analog part is indeed only 18bit in/out, limited by the AD and DA chips used. it is full 24 bits on digital in/out.

both support AES/EBU, digi didnt opt for a breakout cable.

IIO, are you serious or just kidding me?

Guys, do you REALLY don't know what it is???  :o :o :o

I don't have a compatible hardware installed, but here's a screenshot of it in emulation.
It is MultiRack 1.0.4, but there were versions 2.3 and 2.5 of it. Separate for NuBus and PCI. Maybe 2.2, but I don't remember.
You got it when you used full 2.3 and 2.5 installers. I think I was able to run 2.6 (2.8?) Plug-Ins on it concurrently with v3.x Native.
Separate processing on L and R channels possible. M/S mastering possible. IIRC, there was delay compensation component as well, if plug-ins were used only on one channel.

Quote
MultiRack 1.0.4

MultiRack supports the following DSP cards:

Pro Tools Project (Session 8 Mac)
Pro Tools 442 (sometimes called PTII)
Pro Tools III (NuBus only)
AudioMedia II
AudioMedia III (PCI on Macintoshes)

Note: MultiRack currently cannot use DSP Farms or Pro Tools III PCI cards.

MultiRack supports all Waves Plug-Ins except for TrueVerb. This is because TrueVerb needs more memory than any current DSP card can provided except the DSP Farm (which we don't support, yet).  The version of TrueVerb included in the bundle will work on native platforms only (i.e. VST, Peak, AudioSuite, etc.), and not on DSP cards.  The moment we achieve DSP Farm compatibility or another DSP card is put on the market powerful enough to support TrueVerb we will release an upgrade.

If you are using a sound card, you should use the system recommended by the manufacturer. Otherwise, we strongly recommend Macintosh system 7.5.1 or 7.5.5, but have received no bug reports about problems with earlier systems 7.1 or above.

MultiRack needs at least 4MB of RAM but will run on less provided you do not use too many Plug-Ins at once.

Known MultiRack Bugs
A Restart or Shutdown from the Finder will bring MultiRack to the front but will not cause it to Quit. If you manually quit at this point your Mac will shut down normally. We have some incompatibility problems with certain International Support Inits put out by a well known computer manufacturer.

For the next MultiRack release we are working on these points:
•Support for the Symetrix Lucid NB-24, Digidesign DSP Farm, Pro Tools III (PCI).
•Adding record/play Disk file I/O (8-16-24); WaveConvert Set-Up Compatibility; SMPTE/MIDI sync; snapshot automation. •Support for more Plug-Ins.

Here's your Control Panel. As to the DAE/DSI, which one do you need?  I think I have complete archive.

I have since read somewhere that it's all installed automatically, so I'll wait until it gets here and let you know if I need any other files. Thanks  :)

Guys, do you REALLY don't know what it is???

i know that it exists for OS9 but it was never really widely used, and as for "editing" jobs peak or DAWs are somehow more interesting.

as it seems i do not even have a copy of it in my collection. maybe just lost the copy... but it could also be it never existed. which means we also do not have it at macos9lives.com. :) it was commercial before 2015 or so, right?

it is amazing how many programs did support the AMIII directly... the card really had a monopoly on audio IO on the mac.

@syntho was looking for my CD but cannot find it. not even sure if it was seperate or on the PT 3 CD.

its 1996, Apple release their Tsunami Power Macintosh 9500/200 and PCI is the new next thing:

Cubase MAC VST 3.0.2 (Dec 1996) supports Digidesign Audio Media III
later Cubase MAC VST 3.5.0 (May, 1997) added support for Lexicon Studio (1997), Korg 1212 I/O, Lucid PCI24, Event Layla-Gina-Darla

Korg 1212 I/O (1996)
Lexicon Studio (1997)
Sonorus StudI-O (Jan 16 1997)
MOTU PCI-324 (1998)
Lucid PCI24 (1998)
Event Layla-Gina-Darla (announced Mac Compatibility but not in available 1996)

so in 1996 there were Pro Tools III PCI cards
- Pro Tools III Disk IO, PCI (PROJECT, DISK I-O, PCI, 1996) - begin w FD
- DSP Farm, PCI (DSP FARM PCI, 1996)
running on Pro Tools v3.2.1 (1996)

Korg 1212 I/O (1996)

and

Digidesign Audio Media III (1996)

(in 1996 Emagic Logic Audio 2.6 was still tied to Digidesign and Yamaha hardware

Extensive Hardware Support
As well as being capable of up to 32 audio tracks* using Apple SoundManager and the audio in/outs of your Power Macintosh, LOGIC Audio for Mac OS also supports the entire range of Digidesign hardware via DAE (Digidesign Audio Engine). Simply choose one or the other at the start of each session. More extensive support is provided with the optional Extension Series: 16-48 tracks and Plug-In automation with ProTools III and the TDM Extension, up to 8 tracks (with two units) with the CBX Extension and Yamaha's CBX Digital Audio Processors, and unique simultaneous hardware operation with the AV Extension.)

There was 2.6 too, but please also look for 2.3. On some machines 2.5 worked, on others 2.3 worked. Plug-Ins were interchangable IIRC. I had problems with 2.6.

Best way to put it up there is in a way of complete plug-in installers - 2.3 release, 2.5 Gold, 2.6 Gold, all VISE.

Yes, it is useless without Audiomedia card, but, it is also useless without Coyote's emu, if you want to use File I/O component, since nobody liberated that one. With emu it works like a charm.

@smilesdavis - weren't you bragging that you have Waves CDs in your collection? If so, how about making copies and uploading them?

the info about the required plug-ins should be sufficient. but i was about ask: it probably only supports waves 2.5, and indeed we dont have that old stuff complete.

the liberated app came with nothing, because in these days most people did have PT and waves anyway.

"brag"? is that your takeaway?

EasyWaves AudioTrack & EZVerb (1998)
Waves CD ROM 3 (1998)
Waves CD ROM 4 (1998)
Waves 2.6 Installer CD (1999)
Waves 2.8 Installer CD (1999)
Waves 2.8.1 Installer CD (2000)
Waves Installer CD June 2000 (2000)

all I got, which one(s)?

All of them. ;)
Complete CD images are always useful.

P.S. Quite often Waves updates or updaters were included in CDs that came with magazines. I remember seeing 2.2 or 2.3 on German 'Keys' (or was it 'Keyboards') mag CDs around 1996-1997.
