iMac G4 OS9 start up problems
« on: September 03, 2015, 11:52:29 PM »

I have an iMac G4 800 17 inch that I'm wanting to run solely OS9. When starting up from an OS9 CD the screen goes to blank part way through start up. I've never seen this before. Has anyone else experienced it?? Starting OSX works perfectly. I've tried setting different screen resolutions each time without success. Disk is formatted with OS9 driver. Any ideas?

best thing to do is booth with the AHT apple hardware test cd -
the diagnostics on that cd are for diagnosing such problems fast!

doing the google search:
"macintoshgarden.org aht imac" yields the result: http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/apple-hardware-test-cds

Apple Hardware Test (iMac/eMac) - Size 11 MB

AHT for iMac Version 1.2.2, for use with iMac (Summer 2000), iMac (Early 2001), iMac ( Summer 2001), iMac (Flat Panel) , eMac, and iMac (17-inch flat panel). Note: The parenthetical product descriptions (Summer 2000) and (Summer 2001) refer to the summer of the Northern Hemisphere. >

so i think u can use either:
AHTiMac_122.ZIP: AHT for iMac v1.2.2
or
AHTiMac_201.ZIP: AHT for iMac v2.0.1

good luck! let us know how u make out!

The factory images!! Thanks heaps. That's awesome. Diagnostics 1.2.2 works. I ran the extended test & it gave the iMac a clean bill of health which is good to know. Unfortunately it offered no remedy. I ran an OS9 install disk after that & it did the same thing. During start up it gets as far as the window with the progress bar & screen goes blank immediately after that.

It seems that your CD-ROM drive or boot CD media are damaged.
You can burn and try this one:

http://macos9lives.com/smforum/index.php?topic=1654.0

It's just a 128Mb disk image download.

I was able to start up in OS9 off "The Well Tempered Mac" CD. [Love the JS Bach reference btw] I've tried several other OS9 CD's including the restore disks & this is the only one that works so far. I see there's a few utilities on there. I might take a look around. Very much appreciate your help!!!

There's another small issue with this iMac. There is no sound from the onboard speakers & on start up a pop up window tells me, "The device plugged into the Apple speaker minijack cannot be recognised." Do u think it's possible there's a broken off plug in there? I get a bit nervous opening these things up.

I have a 700 Mhz iMac G4 and when it boots with this System folder ."The Well Tempered Mac" :)  it has the same issue with the Apple Pro Speaker,  so maybe there is something wrong with this system folder. I haven't paid much attention to this until now (I have 7 or 8 G4s and a bunch of other Macs  -afro- ) Any way this is a minimal startup system to allow some utilities to run. Once tested, You should try to Install a full System and see if the problem persist.

this same issue was experienced by another user baraktorvan?? just recently but i believe he was using an osx only version of the g4 imac in combination with the imic rom version of os9 install for "unsupported macs" that we offere here..

either that or u are attemtping to plug in normal speakers into a jack that is only meant for "Digital" speakers and its not an analog jack at all?

The bar was set ridiculously high for that tune by Nat Cole. The rest of us just have to try our best. haha
It's a stunning tune that deserves respect. I just hope I did Nat a little bit of justice with that version.
Thanks heaps!

The same popup opens [at start up] in OSX & OS9. The Apple provided speakers nor the built in speaker works, but if I plug in a headphone output or something USB like an MBox sound is achievable that way & the popup disappears. Is that similar to the other users experience? I'm not familiar with that software you mentioned. What's that? I'm not too worried about it. Just wondered if you knew of a quick fix.

It's a weird issue.
Perhaps it is a cables and connectors issue. ( my wife's  little cat tried to eat the Por speakers cables twice )   >:(

BTW here's a couple of my tunes: www.malcolmbishop.co.nz
This is is just some piano stuff. Electronic is kept somewhere else.

Very appreciative of your help! I owe u a virtual beer

Yes, it's a great performance. I like "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" especially.

Here I have posted some of my early works. The first one it is a simple piano tune that is waiting for a pianist to bring it "a new life" :)

Haha, Go, the cat! I'll have a play with your song but it might might be a week or 2.
OK, great.  ;D
I can provide you the score, but it's so simple that may be you don't need it.
