MAC OS X

Versions 1.0.1 through 1.4 are documented in the version-history section of the surviving 1.4.1 Read Me. Separate installer dates and system requirements have not yet been located unless stated below.

1.0.1

Changes (Read Me):

• Fixed faders and knobs on 10.1.5.

• Improved the granularity of faders and knobs—was 1 dB, is now 0.5 dB.

• Fixed a potential FireWire command deadlock which appears to manifest itself only on 10.1.5.

History source: 1.4.4 installer Read Me

1.0.2

Changes (Read Me):

• Fixed: wake from sleep failed to wake the device.

History source: 1.4.4 installer Read Me

1.1‑1059

System: Mac OS X

Supported device: M-Audio FireWire 410

Archived installer: FireWire_OSX_1.1_Build_1059_14.11.2003.dmg

Archived installer date: Nov 14, 2003

Important notes (Read Me):

• Changing the sample rate in external sync mode while audio is playing or recording is not supported. Suggestions for setting the external sample rate are:

1) Set the intended sample rate before launching your host application.

2) Quit the host application, set the intended external sample rate and relaunch the application.

• External sync does not work at 32 kHz.

• Currently, running multiple M-Audio FireWire devices on the same computer at the same time is not possible. This feature will be implemented in an upcoming update.

• Please close all open audio applications before unplugging the FireWire 410. Unplugging or turning off the FireWire 410 while playing or recording audio may cause your applications to unexpectedly quit. This issue applies to all FireWire and USB devices running on Mac OS X 10.2.4 and later.

Original version history in the 1.1 installer Read Me:

• Added AC-3/DTS output support for use with the Panther DVD Player.

• Improved sleep deactivation and recovery after wake. If device remained powered on during sleep, the FW410 wouldn't work again until the power switch was toggled or the device was unplugged.

• Synchronized decibel ranges with the PC version. We now use -64 to zero for level attentuation, in 0.5 dB steps.

• Added uninstaller.

Additional 1.1 entry in the later unified 1.4.1 Read Me:

• First driver release for the FireWire Audiophile.

1.1.1

Changes (Read Me):

• Reduced I/O round trip latency.

• Fix kernel panic with external sync.

History source: 1.4.4 installer Read Me

1.2

Changes (Read Me):

• New unified control panel supporting the FireWire 410 and FireWire Audiophile.

◦ Optimized graphics loading, which speeds up startup and window load time.

◦ Lower CPU usage when dragging controls.

• New Core MIDI driver.

◦ Correctly supports the offline Core MIDI offline protocol, which fixes issues with MIDI devices not being removed in Audio MIDI Setup correctly, or being gratuitously duplicated.

◦ Supports MIDI “active sensing.”

◦ Supports MIDI MTC synchronization.

◦ Supports device icons in Audio/MIDI Setup (Mac OS X 10.2 and later only).

• Overhauled power management.

◦ Sleep/wake and hotplugging are much faster and more reliable.

• Installer improvements.

◦ Warn when installing on an unsupported system version or out-of-spec CPU.

• Fixed the uninstaller for 10.1.5.

• Minimum OS support is now 10.3 or 10.2.8 or 10.1.5. Eliminating 10.2.6 as a 'supported' OS eliminates a potential crash on hot unplug.

• Many other “under the hood” improvements to all components.

History source: 1.4.4 installer Read Me

1.2.1

Changes (Read Me):

• Fix input channel ordering.

• Fix input routing to 7/8 and S/PDIF.

History source: 1.4.4 installer Read Me

Make AC-3 work.

1.2.3‑1099

System: Mac OS X 10.2.8+; 10.3.2+ recommended

Archived installer date: Jun 21, 2004

M-Audio webpage listing: OSX_FW_1xxx.sit — Version 1.2 Build 1099 — Jun 26, 2004 — 2.8 MB

Original M-Audio webpage text (German):

Mac OS X Core Audio- und MIDI-Treiber für FireWire Audio Serie, unterstützt werden die Modelle FireWire 410, FireWire Audiophile sowie FireWire 1814 unter Mac OS X. Macintosh Computer der G3 Serie, G4 Cube sowie G4 Desktop-Systeme bis 500MHz sind unter Mac OS X 10.3.3 auf Grund der Systemleistung derzeit nicht empfohlen, für diese Systeme kann Mac OS 10.2.8 verwendet werden. Wichtige Hinweise für FireWire (IEEE 1394) Anwender bzgl. Hotplugging.

Changes (Read Me):

• FireWire Audiophile A/B switch now works correctly on first press.

• Assigning individual mixer stereo pairs to the rotary controller now works properly.

• MIDI timestamps are now considerably more accurate.

• MIDI now arrives on the MIDI server's realtime I/O thread.

• Reset button now resets all mixer routings and the digital source settings (sync source and port selection).

• Global 'Dim' and 'Mute' buttons work again.

• Startup item no longer creates an empty file (labeled “0” (zero)) at the root of the filesystem.

• Improve hardware rotary control behavior.

• Fix cases where device wouldn't be loaded at startup.

1.2.4

System: Mac OS X 10.2.8+; 10.3.2+ recommended

Changes (Read Me):

FireWire 1814 firmware update. Fixes:

• Noise when changing external sample rate while direct monitoring the ADAT inputs.

• Analog input panning problem.

• External ADAT sync problem after internal sync.

1.3

Changes (Read Me):

• Updated control panel graphics.

• Make aux send on input channels work again.

• Support multiple devices on a single Mac with multiple FireWire buses. One M-Audio FireWire device per bus at this time.

• Reduced I/O roundtrip latency.

• Implemented some basic IOAudioControls. Third-party applications and the OS itself—in particular, the system-wide volume menu—can now use standard Core Audio selectors to change these settings:

◦ Per-channel output volume and mute

◦ Per-channel input volume and mute

◦ Global mute

History source: 1.4.4 installer Read Me

1.4

Changes (Read Me):

• Added support for the FireWire Solo.

History source: 1.4.4 installer Read Me

1.4.1

Archived installer: FireWire_OSX_1.4.1_10.12.2004.dmg

System (Read Me):

• Mac OS X 10.2.8 or later

• Mac OS X 10.3.5 or later

• See box and manual for hardware requirements

Important note (Read Me):

• FireWire 410, FireWire Audiophile, and FireWire 1814. Currently, you cannot plug more than one of these FireWire devices at the same time on the same bus. However, you can add another FireWire bus in the form of a FireWire PCI or PCMCIA host adapter card, and add an additional device to that bus. Support for multiple instances of these devices on the same bus will be fully implemented and qualified in a future firmware update.

Changes (Read Me):

• Added support for the Ozonic.

• Uninstaller now removes preference files.

• Improved performance on older CPUs.

1.4.2

Changes (Read Me):

• Fix 10.3.7 problems with FireWire bus resets resulting in loss of MIDI and/or audio I/O.

• Remove 32 kHz sample rate from the FireWire 410. The hardware doesn't really support it.

History source: 1.4.4 installer Read Me

1.4.3

Original M-Audio filename: FireWire_OSX_1.4.3.dmg — documented, but not archived

Changes (Read Me):

• Updated latency reporting numbers.

History source: 1.4.4 installer Read Me

1.4.4

System: Mac OS X 10.2.8; 10.3.7+

Changes (Read Me):

• Added a workaround for linker problems that could cause Audio MIDI Setup and/or the MIDIServer to crash after a system update.

• Added a workaround for Core Audio AC-3 problem that caused kernel panics with the FW Solo.

1.5

System: Mac OS X 10.2.8; 10.3.9; 10.4+

Changes (Read Me):

New control panel features

• Mini peak meter views.

• Main window is now resizable.

The driver now provides default names for each channel via standard Core Audio properties:

kAudioDevicePropertyChannelNameCFString - "Output S/PDIF 1"

kAudioDevicePropertyChannelCategoryNameCFString - "S/PDIF"

kAudioDevicePropertyChannelNumberNameCFString - "1"

Ozonic-specific

• In some cases, Ozonic MIDI wouldn't work unless audio was streaming. Fixed.

FireWire 1814-specific

• The first four analog aux send controls were not working. Fixed.

• Switching between S/PDIF and ADAT could silence the input channels. Fixed.

General fixes

• Aux pan controls (on the output channel tab of the control panel) did not work. Fixed.

• Set root ownership and permissions on the startup item.

• Setting an input channel to “solo” will now mute non-solo SWReturn channels and vice versa.

• In external sync mode, the driver exports only one sample rate (the external rate). This may prevent some retrograde applications from imploding when the sample rate is changed externally. Switching sample rates may also be slightly faster.

1.5.1

System: Mac OS X 10.2.8; 10.3.9; 10.4+

Changes (Read Me):

• Fix: Some devices stopped working after the Mac was put to sleep.

This improves reliability, speeds up sync lock acquisition—dramatically, for some devices—and guarantees the nominal sample rate won't change without your knowledge.

Other driver/control panel changes:

• Fixed audible distortion when you have multiple apps are streaming audio and you use the faders or toggle switches in the control panel.

• Fixed long delay before the new volume would take effect when using the system volume control.

• Fixed possible sporadic distortion during heavy I/O bus traffic.

• Fixed some issues that could interfere with direct monitoring of input.

• Improved control panel graphics.

• Fixed the uninstaller to work on Mac OS X 10.5.

• Improved device startup time on Mac OS X 10.5.
