Another long-winded, opinionated and meandering expose’.
(Which has been on my desktop, un-polished, far too long.)
IntroEven though my preference has always been a dual boot MDD setup (whether either by multi-partitioning a single HD / SSD etc. - or having at least two separate drives for multiple, bootable operating systems). I finally succumbed to my own long-standing advice concerning the MDD download “Install & Restore” approach. (Downloaded and now tested here from both Macintosh Garden and the Repository.) *Our own 1 DVD + 5 CD MDD Install & Restore ©2003 download on the Hotline server is currently incomplete. But check the Garden…
https://macintoshgarden.org/apps/power-mac-g4-software-install-restoreHowever, sour grapes from me. I
do not and
did not like this process at all, during… or even after full completion. Maybe over time, that might change? Oooh, back to individually colored file folders again!
Still, I prefer having OS 9.2.2 standalone on one drive / partition - and some version of OS X (mine = Tiger) on another partition / drive. The MDD Install & Restore - 2 DVD disc set will eventually yield you Mac OS 10.3.2 (Panther) and OS 9… (the el-lame-o “Classic” shell version).
Some people DO like the “Classic” version. [Who?]
And just possibly…
You can install OS 9 from the DVD disc set to another partition - but I didn’t care to try - or spend the time trying.
So unless you really really like, need or simply prefer Panther… I’d use a version of OS 9 from the Forum here - and again… maybe some
other version of OS X (Tiger 10.4.6 up to 10.4.11). In a segregated, dual boot arrangement. Again, your choice.
Languages?
And yes, the MDD
I & R disc set will allow you to choose other install languages, just as most other versions of full OS X Apple installers do. *Please refer to Protools5LEGuy’s recent comments concerning this. [Even if you’re DAW inclined…or not.]
https://macos9lives.com/smforum/index.php?topic=7547.msg58426#msg58426
And then…After you have successfully installed Panther from the first DVD and might still have some patience (or hair) left, it’s time to “Install Applications & Mac OS 9” - which may eventually request / require that you insert the 2nd DVD disc from the set if you want to install other apps and OS 9. Oh boy, even more fun!

Contents of first MDD I & R disc above.
After all of the above has been successfully completed… IF you also have a version of Tiger already installed, it’s time to Safe boot with Tiger (holding down the
S key) in order to prevent Tiger’s Spotlight app from indexing your new Panther installation AND the “Classic” OS 9 version that might also be installed.
Say it along with me now….
Vee do not like
zeee Beee Treee errors!
So avoid them in this manner.
Nope, I don’t use “Classic” OS 9 for nuthin’ anyway. But definitely, suit yourselves.

See where / how the Panther 10.3.2 installation is intentionally restricted from Tiger’s Spotlight indexing below? Same for any OS 9.2.2 partition / drive. [Tiger’s Spotlight Privacy window seen here.]
⬇︎
But Panther itself
does not have Spotlight. (Well there’s a plus.)
OS X’s?However, if you opt instead for Leopard as your primary solo, or even secondary OS X install (MacOS 10.5 / 10.5.) then you’ll also need to deal with disabling Time Machine too.
And while we’re primarily OS 9 - centric here, occasionally “we” do dabble a bit in versions of OS X. In my case quite
simply as a backup for any problems with my OS 9 working installs. A bootable Tiger partition / HD / SSD can provide machine access. And of course, there are other uses for El Tigre as well.
For instance… I used Toast 7 Titanium, running under Tiger to burn the DVDs from the MDD I & R downloaded Toast files AND then used those burned DVDs to
Install and Restore to another available partition inside that very same MDD.

Why Panther, why?Unless you are a complete and utter glutton for punishment, OR you suffer from severe OCD which compels you to keep your MDD as original as the day it was born… I no longer support, nor will I advise using the MDD Install & Restore disc sets. And I very sincerely apologize to all that I have ever recommended this to previously. I actually do feel… and now actually
have felt your pain. Sorry indeed. Mea culpa. It works but I still don’t care for it. (Yet.)
And then again… perhaps you’re a Panther person with a penchant for possibly preserving the past perfectly? Now do please explain why some of you might actually prefer El Pantera, OS 10.3? (It is kinda sorta retro cool.) [Insert the sound of crickets here.] See:

Oh and congratulations if you made through all of this AND it made any sense to you whatsoever. It's now off my desktop and I can point to it in the future for those attempting this install or restore. Thank you so very much.
