Processor: 933 MHz PowerPC G4 ( QS 2002 )
Memory: 1.5 GB SDRAM

2 internal hard drives (Mac OS 10.4 and Mac OS 10.5)

Now I'm interested in going back in time and installing OS 9 to one of the drives.

I do have Apple's OS 9 install disk.

Will the install just add OS 9 without whipping out the OX X ?

Why dont you put another hard disk under the cd?

A hard drive to boot OS9 needs OS9 drivers. When in 10.4 ask disk utility for " installing macos9 drivers" option. 10.5 others users had said dont let you do that.
You can install Os9 and OsX on same drive, but Diehard recommends stay pure in 9 without X OSes, at least on same drive.

mac os x uses a modified version of the same file system mac os 9 uses
its caled mac os extended (with journalling)
this journalling helps mac os x but it makes os9 quirky _ prone to error
its possible to have mac os x and os 9 installed ont he same hard drive providing that u dont drag files back and forth between the partitions
if u were to reformat and erase one drive.. and then create two partitions
and make sure to format both "mac os extended" *WITHout* journalling
this reduces the risk of mac os 9 having errors if u happen to drag files between x + 9 but like i said just try not to do this and u should be ok

this is my experience.. others would tell u do not dare even tempt fate and put them on  the same drive but sometimes u have to make due with what u have!
i wouldnt reccommend using less then an 80gb drive with 40gb for each os tho... 40gb split into two 20gb partitions might be a tight squeeze!

when u format + erase the drive the first time make sure u click the option to add mac os 9 drivers to the drive because u wont have this option later and this can only be done when the drive is emptied + formatted + partitioned in 2

i would also say start with one of our downloadable images instead of installing from cd as they have more recent versions of drivers etc..

find the post that says "if u need mac os 9 click here" or whatever. its a blue sticky at the top of the general help forum i think

Thank you very much for the extremely informative information and also for generously sharing your knowledge.

Armed with your heads up information iplan to use a external firewired hard drive dedicated to "pure" OS 9.  Which should get me out of opening up into "Classic" mode which inow get in using OS 10.4/9 in my PowerPC iMac G3.

So as one guy once said, i'll be back asking for more help please.

You can put a hard drive on the place of the zip unit, under the cd. Put jumper in same position than CD (normally cable select)
