Why do you need to log in to see images.
« on: September 14, 2025, 03:08:09 PM »

I am curious why you need to log in to see posted images?

Well all posts with images. The red cubase post earlier today, has images, but they only show up if you are logged in. If you are not logged in there is no indication in that posted message that it even includes an image. There is also a post today about RAM speed test that has images if you are logged in, but no images if not logged in, although that post as I recall does have a link to dl the image.

The not showing images also means if you are reading via the rss feed, you are not aware of their being images. Even if you select to view the web page from the RSS reader, you get no image or indication there is an image associated with the post. It is not a big issue, but often in the case of cards, devices, or graphs an image is important to follow what a thread is about.

Early on here — and many times since, intentionally relegating images (both attached & embedded) AND file downloads… were restricted to registered and logged-in members. This was partially to incentivize lurkers and the occasional, hit-and-run download visitor to register with the Forum. Maybe best to ask Knezzen or DieHard directly about this?

Ya gotta register almost everywhere else, dontcha?

68kMLA and MacRumors / PowerPC Macs, both will allow you to view small images without logging in — BUT in order to view larger, more detailed versions of those smaller image files, well… ya gotta log in. [Does System 7 Today offer the ability to attach, view or embed images?]

I think that TinkerDifferent.com doesn’t require login - but I could be mistaken.

Have never used RSS to access content here. Do you get the header info using the RSS approach? Because, when accessing the Forum via most browsers, you’ll see this little “paper clip” icon alongside the post’s title… signifying attachments (files, images, etc.).

I visit MacOS9Lives at least once, if not more than 4 to 5 times a day via FireFox browser and I read daily, nearly all new posts. Yet I may never actually log in… unless there’s an image I’m interested in or whatever the post might actually cover.

TRY the Original MacOS9Lives theme “Blu” / via your Profile --> Look and Layout settings.

Thanks for the explanation. I am not sure I agree with the reasoning, but then it is not my call.

Sadly that is true. Registering is not hard, but most of the time unregistering is all but impossible.

I either use Leaf or NetNewWire for RSS. They will either show just the heading, a text scraping or the web view, and you can easily switch between viewing modes. Mostly I use them for reading news of the day, but I really do appreciate when forums have RSS feeds. I can read a forum posts, if I want to respond to one or more, I can compose a responses, login post responses and be gone.

My bank logs you out automatically after 3 minutes of inactivity, and I wish all sites would do that. I tend to forget to log out when I am done with my visit.

Just set your browser to 'Delete all cookies and site data when you quit <your application>' and you'll be just fine.

As to the images not being visible to the outside world - I'm all for that.
Search engines, AI, picture re-posters on Pinterest, Reddit and wherenot shall have no access to my images that I've chosen to share among the members of MY club.
