Top Ten MacOS 9 Games
« on: June 01, 2025, 12:08:23 PM »

@Mat and @BoloTied just brought up the subject of listing available MacOS 9 LAN games.
I’d like to expand upon that just a bit with the Top Ten Mac OS 9 Games (in your individual opinions).

So there, this subject is now wide open for all you gamers. Please reply with your list to this topic and then maybe we can rank them all afterwards, dependent upon what responses we might actually receive. If your list includes LAN capable games, then do please note that as well.

Come on all of you gamers (and all of you gamer lurkers out there). Register and post your list!

If responses are low or limited, then all of the previous desires for a Gamer section of its very own, is never likely to ever happen. Do you have a pulse or do keystrokes hurt your fingers? ???

Attached here is a little piece of shareware that I’ve been looking for in my archives for-ever.

However a WARNING… if you’re a cat lover (IIO) you might be a bit sensitive to the content. If so, I’d instead recommend Kitten Shaver v.2 (also available via Mac Garden). https://macintoshgarden.org/games/kitten-shaver-2 There’s also a manual available there too.

Now just watch this subject fade right into oblivion.

Good idea @aBc (though it's usually best practice to provide your own list first when soliciting the lists of others!). Here's my top ten list in order of nostalgia:

1. Myth II - I forget if it was from the first one or the sequel, but it was the first time a tutorial made me laugh out loud with the line "Press the Space Bar, the big key below all the little keys!". Really fun squad-based RTS and LAN-capable!

2. Bolo - As my username suggests, I'm a big Bolo fan from back in the day. It was astounding how well it networked on machines that were ancient in the late 90s (over serial AppleTalk no less), and building forts out of turrets only to have the rest of the players gang up was some great emergent gameplay. LAN-capable too!

3. Marathon 2 - It was *our* first person shooter, made for the Mac back when Bungie was the best. While not as flashy as Duke Nukem or gory as Doom, Marathon was eerie and puzzling. And I still can hear the gun and explosion sound effects from the first level and the voices of your comrades as they teleport away... "Get me outta here!". LAN-capable!

4. Civilization 2 - The game that needs no introduction and is one of the finest iterations of the series. The videos of the advisors were the coolest feature back then, especially when they'd agree or disagree with each other's advice (lookin' at you, Luxuries Elvis). LAN-capable!

5. The Maxis Simulators - It's almost unfair to include the Sim City, Sim Tower, Sim Ant, and Sim Farm games in the list, but we were so thankful back in the day that Maxis ported their games to the Mac. One of my earliest gaming memories was my parents finally relenting and buying me Sim City 2000 from Egghead Software. I still remember walking out into the cold, crisp night with the fresh scent of petricor, opening that big ol' box and pulling out the thick manual that would be my de facto bathroom reading for the next couple of years.

6. The LucasArts Point-And-Clicks - I could fill the top ten with just those games, Secret Of Monkey Island, Day Of The Tentacle, Sam And Max, Full Throttle, Loom, Secret Of Monkey Island 2... the list goes on.

7. Majesty - It's good to be the king! This was the first "idle" game I played and I really enjoyed how relaxing the gameplay was. Sure, half the kingdom's on fire and the sewer rats have teamed up with the roaming dragons, but you pay other people to take care of that! Just apply a bounty and make sure your heroes can buy healing potions and sufficient armor at the shops, and the kingdom practically runs itself! It's LAN-capable too!

8. EV Nova - The culmination of Ambrosia's Escape Velocity series, a vast universe with a rich storyline to get lost in. It's difficult and unforgiving, but once you get the hang of combat (and a ship capable of withstanding some damage), the power fantasy kicks in and you can start to boss around whole planets.

9. Maelstrom - Before there was EV Nova, there was Maelstrom. Simple. Addictive. Timeless. Smash up those asteroids and collect those powerups for as long as you can!

10. Spaceward Ho - What EV Nova is to action adventure, Spaceward Ho is to strategy and 4x. The "hmm" sound effect for finding a mediocre planet is burned into my brain such that it's what I hear whenever I'm mildly disappointed.

I'm excited to see others' responses! I would have put Warcraft I, II, and Starcraft on this list but those are the obvious choices and I wanted to spotlight some of my more obscure favorites.

Point well taken. However I’m no gamer, never have been. I’m just testing the waters so-to-speak because we’ve had a lot of discussion previously about having a section primarily devoted to games and I thought this might be a good way to gauge just how many gamers are interested enough to submit their personal favorites and thus… also gauge that interest. Make any sense?

And I certainly appreciate the detailed list of yours to kick things off.

Let’s see how many more might actually take the time.
Or, if there really isn’t all that much interest. ;)

always hard to rate programming tools, creative tools or games as "good, better, best", as it mostly depends on your personal skills, interest or taste.

but as far as i know about games i would designate RTCW and MOHAA the "best" full featured ego shooters, total annihilation should be the "best" in its category, and the winner in strategy is of course WC III, though it runs much better in OSX. (i almost added AOE III, then i noticed it is OSX only.) AOE II was ugly, but i dig its readable and editable AI and map generation, which i extensively used to make interesting random map setups.

kitten shaver v2 is illegal in my house.

edit: oh, now forgot ambrosia! my bad. choose one yourself, there are a few nice ones. eventually harry the handsome is the most funny story.

quagmire was pretty nuts, too. not sure if it can run in OS9, it is a bit older.

All in good fun :D And that makes total sense, having grown up a Mac user. There wasn't a strong gaming community back then so I can understand the lack of interest now. And if someone doesn't have a nostalgic interest in these games, they'd be a hard sell to someone new these days.

I would hope that every Mac user has at least one game that they like and are willing to admit to (like @ssp3), but I cast no aspersions at those who do not partake!

@IIO Good picks! I was big into Total Annihilation, though it was tough convincing friends to play it instead of Warcraft 3 or Starcraft.

Haven't tried Kitten Shaver and I might leave that rock unturned XD

Well, I've actually created the games section on the mainpage, so I'll link to that :-)

Among those, my personal favorites are probably Wingnuts, Glider Pro, Dust - Tales of the wired West, Warcraft II, Civilization II, argh..the list keeps growing :-)

I think Gaming on OS 9 is still very appealing to retro gamers. It's largely unknown territories for many, there's some exclusive titles in the Macintosh spirit out there (Glider Pro immediately comes to mind) and many Mac versions were simply superior to their PC counterparts. Higher resolution, bug-fixed, add-ons etc.

There has always been a very devoted Mac gaming community throughout the early days, but they've never been a mass phenomena and Apple never truly supported it (though throughout the 90's they started to realize that their computers are bought for Excel and PageMaker; and used for games)

I'm still playing Warcraft II: BattleNet Edition on my Mini. About 2 years ago I've created some coop multiplayer maps and played them with Knezzen and Cashed - OS 9 multiplayer fun back in 2023 and had great memories ;-)

We also played some rounds of Bolo which still holds up once you've learned the controls and gameplay. Fun diversion for an hour or two!

I had been hoping for a long time that we might be able to kind of revive mac multiplayer gaming on Mac OS. Would be fun to play all these great games again with some friendly folks. Maybe we should schedule a monthly game night where play Age of Empires, Bolo, Warcraft, Unreal Tournament, Skyfighters etc. etc. together?

Maybe we should really consider adding a Games forum to M9L ...

Well, I am absolutely no fan of such "top 10 lists". They are creating a too tight corset. It is impossible to rate "Tropico", "Tamale Loco" and "Medal of Honor" for Mac OS 9 seriously, … ;)

What i bought and own in original: Myst, Riven, Myth 2, CIV 2, Tropico, Red Faction

What comes to my mind is for example; Tomb Raider 3, F/A-18 Hornet 3.1, Stronghold, Return to Castle Wolfenstein
, X-Plane 8, IndyCar 2, Quake 3, Oni, Gravitass, Unreal (Tournament), Diablo 2, 4x4 Evo, Heroes of Might and Magic III,  …

I'm so down for a regularly scheduled game night. That sounds like a lot of fun and I can put my new rig to the test (apologies in advance for the lag and dropped connections)!

And you're right about buying the Mac for Excel or PageMaker but using it for games. All work and no play...

Technically, Warcraft II is also LAN capable with the IPC extension+control panel.
Had it working between a iMac G3 DV and a LC III using a crossed ethernet cable ;p
