iMac G3 Tray-Loader (Rev. A-D) Fan Upgrade
« on: August 27, 2024, 11:45:00 AM »

Hey folks,

I've haven't been able to find any concrete evidence as to the tray-loader's fan specifications other than it's a 92mm. Apparently it uses a proprietary fan connection? Has anyone done an upgrade like this?

Other concerns are what RPM to go for and if it's 12v or 5v.

Would really appreciate some advice here :)

I have done this on a Rev A and Rev B. I just used the appropriate size Noctua fan. The fan had five wires but the iMac only has two, so I spliced 'em in using wire diagrams on the box of the fan. It does not have variable speed and the fan runs top speed all the time, but a new noctua fan is far quieter and seems, to the back of my hand, to push a lot more air, than the factory fan. Absolutely worthy upgrade.

You will need to get your fingers all up in the analogue board and power supply which are nestled cozily next to the CRT, though.
