Multiple Midi Interfaces via USB
« on: September 19, 2018, 08:49:31 AM »

I haven't actually experimented with this yet but I thought that couldn't hurt to ask if anybody has any experience running more than a single usb interface on os9.  I have more than eight rackmounted tone modules and was wondering if hooking up more than eight would be as simple as having two midi interfaces and "activating" both of them through FreeMidi / OMS.

Should it be this easy?

it depends on the mutliclient capability of the usb device driver. the steinberg midex series for example supports (i think) max 4 devices in OS9 and max 2 in OSX.

you should look into the Unitor interfaces, also the MOTU Midi Time piece AVs. they have the ability to network together, which in addition to making management and configuration from the computer easier, also allows you to set up routing matricies that go between units, so you could have your master keyboard on port 1 of interface 1 playing port 7 of interface 2. its great if you're working with a lot of rack-mount modules like I do.

(edit) the older opcode interfaces did this too, but, good luck finding one of their USB versions.

Thanks for the replies - I do have a Midi timepiece AV kicking around ... I'll give it a shot when I have a little time.  Thanks again!
