I have a 2003 MDD 1.25GHz Single CPU (M9145LL/A) running 10.4.11.  I’d like to install 9.2.2, but I’m not sure how to use the M9145LL/A Restore Set described here (http://macos9lives.com/smforum/index.php/topic,3266.msg20810.html#msg20810)

Where do I start?  Do I need to download both the Install & Restore disks (1 DVD and 1 CD) and the Software Restore disks (4 CDs)?  Which disk do I start with?

As I understand it, these computers shipped new with both 9.2.2 and 10.2 installed.  Will the Install/Restore processes install both operating systems?  Do I need to do any partitioning of the single hard drive before starting the install/restore process?

It’s my understanding I can’t just install any 9.2.2, but I need to use the Restore set specifically for this computer.

Thanks for any guidance you can give me.

I've done this with a recently aquired MDD 867 (complete with CDs)...

Run the OS 10.2 installer first. Recommend you partition the drive into at least two.

Then run the Software Restore (it requires 10.2 pre-installed). This installs lots of support apps + OS9..
Now one partition is just like it left the factory.

Then I recommend installing OS9.2.2 into second partition. Use this one for booting OS9. (Leave the other OS9 for Classic use).

I don't know why Apple tried to confuse with installers AND restore disks.

all G4 were shipping with OSX install CDs, an OS9 install CD (whose name usually was in your language), and some also hads these weird restore discs, at least up to 10.2

you can use "any" OS9 installer CD - when it is at least as new as the one for the MDD.

the "universal" OS9 from this forum covers all machines http://macos9lives.com/smforum/index.php/topic,2109.0.html

Ovalking, thanks so much...this makes sense.  Is it the "Software Restore" disks (4 CDs) that are used to install 9.2.2 on the second partition?

IIO, thanks for your post.  From the reading I've done, I was under the impression the 2003 MDD (and some other G4s) had a "unique" version of 9.2.2, and the only way to install it was to use the Restore set for the specific model.  If my understanding is not correct, it certainly seems easier to use the "universal" 9.2.2 disk.

For some background, I have an iMac G4, a Quicksilver 733, a 2003 MDD, and a DP MDD.  I got them a guy who just needed them gone, and they all have 10.4 or 10.5 installed, no OS9.  I don't have any original disks.  I'd like to get OS 9 installed and bootable on all of them.  Can I do that by creating a partition and following the steps at "How to Install Mac OS 9 if you already have OS X Installed" (http://macos9lives.com/smforum/index.php/topic,2109.0.html)?  It would certainly be easier to use one "universal" 9.2.2 disk rather than trying to get a unique restore set for each computer!

Thanks again,

Marty

you can also put OS9 on t he samme partition than OSX, but that is a matter of taste.

i for example have OS9 and an OS9-for-classic folder strictly seperated.

you may also rename the systemm foldere and it will also boot from thze trash (but not from the desktop)

the only important rule is that OS9 will not boot from partitions bigger than >192 GB. this is what you need to check.

p.s. and of course the disk should have OS9 drivers.

... you know, I was just looking in there at those very same disc-images (being newish I'm stickybeaking like mad :D) and I noticed something ... well, not alarming, but disappointing - one of the disc ISOs is missing.
