As if I needed yet another Firewire drive.  ::)

Simply could not pass up this retro-kewl era OWC FW 400 enclosure.
(The old style, winged OWC Mercury FW logo… was simply irresistible.)

I am assuming you bought one from here (if not, that is an amazing coincidence)

Yes DH, I got mine from mustagcoupe about a week or so ago.
(One of the very first ones that he had cleaned and prepped.)
And I can personally vouch both for him and the enclosures.

I had wanted to post about it last week but he asked that I wait
until they were all ready… I didn’t know that he was posting today. ::)

He and I often share ideas & info back and forth about G3 B&Ws
as well as possible (other) mod-i-fi-ca-tions. Recently we’ve discussed
building “alternative” cases for some loose B&W mobos.

Some here might also be interested in his “Plywood G5 Build”.
https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/plywood-g5-build.2333413/

I’ve a couple of G5 Cheese Graters that were bounced around too
much & have always considered building different cases for them.
Lately, with a score of some white, eighth-inch thick Corian® here
(similar to plexiglas)… who knows where this all might eventually lead?

But yes, if anyone’s interested in the OWC Firewire retro enclosures…
do contact mustagcoupe ASAP. 8)

mine looked like the yellow one and was labelled icybox. if it wouldnt have that annoying 120 gb limit i would probably still use it. you can easily pile a dozen of them to a platci tower, it is a really good case.

In the spirit on going off-topic (pretty much every post, lol) I would just add...

This only makes sense, we are now going full circle :)

1) Make furniture out of G5 cases

2) Make G5s out of furiture

I bought an old USB Wacom tablet last year for my G4, size full A4 because I thought it would be nice to have a large one (I don't know a lot about them). Turns out, it's not. This smaller, almost-appropriately-coloured one has been up for sale locally for a bit and in the end I couldn't resist.

The Graphire are not just smaller, but also less capable when used in paint or CAD applications. They were made for a more casual sketch market.

DVI-A to VGA adapter from Best Buy for my G4.

https://www.bestbuy.com/site/best-buy-essentials-dvi-a-to-vga-adapter-black/6452973.p?skuId=6452973&intl=nosplash

The DVI-D to HDMI adapter I was using that had always worked fine started blanking out randomly. Another one I secured did the same. Found this adapter and it works perfectly. Fixed all my issues and freed up my monitor's HDMI input to be used by an HP Windows XP tower that had lain dormant in my setup for a while.

I’m buying USB 2.0 hubs. Dug one unused out of a storage box (surprise!) a few weeks back and then realized that they’re so inexpensive now that I should have multiples between upstairs and downstairs USB “sneaker-netted” machines. (Especially when one considers the two USB ports normally on PPC machines.)

No more reaching around MDDs, Quicksilvers, Mac minis, etc. and blindly trying to hit that one possibly remaining available slot! Bought one today that has its own power supply just to see how that might work.

Ha!

Big spender… right around ten bucks each. ::)

Those hubs are from the era where you had to choose "single transaction translator" or "multiple transaction translators" (STT vs MTT). If the connection from the hub to the computer is running at USB 2.0 Hi Speed (480 Mbps), you would expect to be able to connect multiple devices at Full Speed (12 Mbps) and have them all run as fast as they possibly can. But with a STT hub, you can actually only talk to a single Full Speed device at a time at 12 Mbps!

This issue has been known about the whole time, but this important feature (MTT) is almost never advertised so you need to carefully research it. It's very relevant for MIDI because MIDI merge boxes all use 12 Mbps—and so do input peripherals like mice, keyboards, and serial adapters, scanners, etc.

Good to know, robespierre... for those focused on MIDI, DAW etc. Thanks.

Me, I’m just running (small image & installer) files up and down the stairs via thumb drives.

(i.e. the “sneaker net”.)

Is it safe to say that all USB 3.x hubs support MTT for USB 1.1/2.0 connections? Google AI says no. Even the latest USB 3.x hubs might not support MTT. Note that the USB 2.0 and USB 3.x parts of a USB 3.x hub are completely separate so it makes sense that some manufacturers might cheap out on the USB 2.0 part of the hub.

Does USB Prober.app show a difference between hubs that support STT or MTT?
Yes, the Interface Protocol for a Hub class Interface has these options:
 http://www.linux-usb.org/usb.ids
Code: [Select]
C 09  Hub
00  Unused
00  Full speed (or root) hub
01  Single TT
02  TT per port

USB Prober.app lists those as:
Code: [Select]
            Interface Protocol:   0
Interface Protocol:   1   (Multi TT Hub configured as a Single TT Hub)
Interface Protocol:   2   (Multi TT Hub)

I don't know why USB Prober.app says "Multi TT Hub configured as a Single TT Hub" instead of just "Single TT Hub". The source code doesn't say anything.

Looking at the output text produced by USB Prober.app, I see that any hub that supports Interface Protocol 2 also supports Interface Protocol 1.

ioreg shows which protocol each interface currently uses.

Besides interface class, there is device class.
USBProberV2 source code has these device protocols for device class 9 "Hub":
Code: [Select]
0: Full/Low Speed
1: High Speed Single Transaction Translator
2: High Speed Multiple Transaction Translators
3: SuperSpeed

Full/Low Speed is for USB 1.1 speeds.
High Speed is for USB 2.0 speed of 480 Mb/s.
SuperSpeed is USB 3.x

Why are device protocols different than interface protocols? Or, why doesn't the USB ids database have a distinction between device and interface protocols? Need to check the USB spec to see what the difference is.

https://www.usb.org/defined-class-codes describes the difference between device and interface descriptors. class 9 is device only, so why does USB Prober show class 9 for interfaces? What document defines protocol 3 (SuperSpeed) of USB device class 9 (Hub)?

Anyway, the combination of device/interface class and device/interface protocol in ioreg should indicate exactly what mode the hub supports and uses.
