Has anyone else had this problem?
Sounds like a bad, poor or incomplete burn of the download.
You might try the V.9 burn again and select a very slow burn speed.
(We all have our collections of CD coasters.)
And yes, many have had similar problems, normally attributed primarily to “bad burns”.

Of course, if push comes to shove and you can’t get a bootable working disc no matter how hard you might try...
perhaps one of our kind and considerate European members might mail you one (to your ultra-secret location / country). :o

I burned the iso of v9, however I couldn't get the computer to boot from it. So I burned the v8 iso instead (the version linked in the first post.) This time it booted up just fine!

The first post only has a link to v9, though. Are you sure you booted from v8?

Like @aBc said, yes, all symptoms indicate a bad CD burn. What CD drive and burning software are you using? Reiterating @aBc's advice, try burning it with the lowest speed possible. You should also check a "verify" option on your burning software so that it checks for you, after burning, if the burning was done correctly.

I'm confident, based on your described symptoms, that this is the issue.

Hi ssp3, thanks for the response. No, it was a DVD+R burned on a 2006 Macbook running OS X 10.4.11.

Thanks also to aBc and Jubadub for the hints. I had no idea a burn could go bad like that, I always thought it would either work or not.

In the end I dragged the system folder from the CD directly onto the HD, then performed the "blessing" ceremony as described on https://macos9lives.com/mac%20os%209%20lives_003.htm. Now I am  :)

Oops I meant on this page https://macos9lives.com/smforum/index.php?topic=4365.msg30502#msg30502 under "previous versions", a recent edit I guess.

So... I burned v9 to a CD and this time it worked! I could "restore" OS9 and boot up on that volume. 8)

Weird question, especially at such a late hour, but...

Has anyone ever attempted to boot his/her minis under Mac OS 9.0.4, 9.1, 9.2 and/or 9.2.1 instead of 9.2.2?

Could be useful to have 9.0.4 in a separate partition to run those few problematic programs that will throw a fit at anything higher than 9.0.4.

I need to fetch myself some System (and Finder?) files from 9.2.1 and lower and try it sometime this week.

This is not a direct answer to your question but more a clue to "how to try it" I think.

@zefrenchtoon Thanks for the pointer!

Btw, I tried to use the Mac mini ROM with Mac OS 9.1 (System and Finder files replaced accordingly), and, it bombs during Start Up screen. :) Oh well, it would have been too easy otherwise.

I may try 9.2 and 9.2.1 next, but, I'm not sure I care about these so much, since I'm too happy with Mac OS 9.2.2 to try anything else, to be perfectly honest. But it would be great if people got the mini to boot 9.0.4 and 8.6 somehow.

Or, even earlier than 8.6. New World ROM Macs, with support for the separate Mac OS ROM file, got introduced with Mac OS 8.1 for the Beige PowerMac G3, so we could theoretically go as low as that. To go even lower, I believe we would have to patch up the System file of Mac OS 8.0 and lower with whatever was added to the Mac OS 8.1 System file, much like how we patch System 7.5.5 ~ Mac OS 8 System file so that they support HFS+ just like Mac OS 8.1, which @ELN pulled off in 2020.

So finally got the right version of the Apple Service Diagnostics and burned it to a CD. Boots up. (Non-Apple keyboard/mouse hooked up through a USB hub worked when I held down on the C key.) Ran the Ethernet test. Everything passes. Ran the entire test set three times. Everything passes. But still no Ethernet. Cable last tried was pulled from a working port on an Intel Mini. The Intel Mini connects via 100 base-T connected through my ancient hub. Same setup does not work for the Mini. The extensions, as I remember them, are installed. Something is wrong with the port that is beyond the ability of the hardware test to determine.

Anyone have any other ideas?

OK, went and bought another Mac mini G4 off of eBay, listed as starts up, but HD untested. Got it today, it booted up into MacOS 10.5 once I hooked it up. It had an IP address. Shut it down, took it apart, removed the HD, took apart the Mini with the non-working Ethernet, got the SSD out of that one and put it in the new one. It's currently running with full Ethernet access and can access my SAN. Definite improvement.

But, the other issue with these...Sound. I have a sound device plugged into USB, Apple Profiler recognizes that it's an HID (USB Audio Device), but it's not selectable in the Sound Control Panel. USB Overdrive doesn't have any options for it either. How do I get this to work for sound?

This is the one I ended up getting to try out.

G4 Mac Mini Audio
« Reply #1491 on: April 29, 2024, 06:08:51 PM »

Begin reading here https://macos9lives.com/smforum/index.php?topic=5952.msg45245#msg45245 and check the linked images for comparison / hints with yours? Then read further down and through the thread as @zenfrenchtoon describes how he got one (or both) to work with a mini. Begin again here: https://macos9lives.com/smforum/index.php?topic=5952.msg45283#msg45283

AND THEN… if none of the above helps, there’s always the M-Audio Transit or the Behringer UFO202 or UCA202 small USB audio interfaces that I have tested with the mini and they DO work.

Others?

In August of 2023 DieHard reported “no-go” on the M-Audio FW410.

But finally in December 2023 (after many, many years and countless efforts by many here) we finally... successfully downgraded the firmware in the FW410 to work with OS 9.

Haven’t tested with a mini yet, but now perhaps it is more of a possibility? Firewire NOT USB.

Thank you! I'm fairly certain I've seen that topic before, but just forgot it in the noise of life.

I know I had looked at the M-Audio Transit before, but it appears to have been discontinued. I have the Behringer UCA202 in my Amazon cart now, I think I'll pick that one up.

OK, so I got that, plugged it in, turned on the Mini. No sound once it is booted up. I cannot change the volume level from the Sound Control Panel. I guess I'll be digging through that section on audio you linked a bit more. No idea what I'm missing at this point. An no, it does not come up as an option for audio output/input. Or does anyone have any ideas for me to check out?

Did you get the 13 page manual with your UCA202?
If so, then you might note on page 8 the use of the
Behringer TRUTH B2031A (powered) speakers?

You’ve tried headphones alone connected & the volume ctrl?

Actually a powered external speaker set. The issue is that I cannot change the volume in the Control Panel. It's at zero and will not move. When I try to adjust the volume, the menu bar blinks just like it does when you select Mute. It just isn't recognizing that there is an additional sound device on it. All of the extensions appear to be turned on, so I just am not certain what is going on. Going to try to get some screen shots tomorrow from the System Profiler, which does show the device.

Regrettably, I don’t currently have one of these connected and haven’t the time at present to do so. However, some suggestions:

(1). Simply the change / swap the USB port that you currently have it connected to. (Odd as this may sound, it has worked for me in the past.)

(2). Remove it from the mini completely and zap the PRAM and rebuild the desktop of your OS 9 install.

(3). Then try, try again - booting first with UCA202 disconnected and then plugging it in to the USB port AFTER booting, OR…

(4).
After PRAM zap and desktop rebuild, connect it and then reboot. Any difference?

AND, if you’re not getting any sound to headphones via the UCA202’s headphone jack (with no speakers connected) then you might have a bad unit. Test this first, perhaps before any of the above.

ALSO, I don’t recall being able to set volume via the sound control panel before (but this is relying upon my foggy memory from several years ago). AND the powered speakers that I did use had an inline volume control knob where I rather simply adjusted the volume.

There’s also always the possibility that you’ve an extension conflict, if ALL extensions are ON.

And hopefully you’re not using any sort of USB hub?

Okay, update.

After an hour digging around here, I found a UF0202 and attached it. No, it does not show up in the Sound control panel and it is therefore not level adjustable (there). However it does play desktop Platinum sounds from clicks, etc. And with headphones attached - the sound level, is adjustable through / to the headphones via the volume dial on the unit. THEN popped in a music CD and via iTunes, music played and individual tracks were selectable.

NOTE: in order for your UCA202 to appear in the Sound Control panel (as I believe the M-Audio Transit also requires) you may need to download and install the “ASIO 4ALL USB Audio Driver” from the Behringer website.

Good luck. ;)

Good luck. ;)

Thanks!

I did them all, just in case. I have in-game sound now. This is fantastic. So no idea what fixed it, but it is working so I don't care which point did fix it.

I recently used the V9 disc to install Mac OS 9 on my 1.25 Ghz G4 Mini.

Overall it works pretty well, but I've observed a few issues.

1. Mouse will sometimes not move after boot. Moving the mouse a bit while it's booting up seems to help it more reliably work after boot. Issue occurs with several mice that I've tried in the same way, even with Apple USB mice. I have to restart the Mini to restore the mouse movement working properly. Mouse issues seem to be a reoccurring common problem with the Mini from what I've seen.

2. The Mini will occasionally just freeze / crash. I think most of the times this happened it was thermal related as it happened most when the ambient temperature was high. Taking off the casing and recently repasting the CPU seems to have helped a lot. It still sometimes crashes, although I am not sure if that's just MacOS 9 or if something related to it running on the Mini is responsible. Usually it happens either when idle or in some games.

3. There is like a 10-15 second delay on boot/restart before the Mini detects the boot disk and starts booting. Not sure if this is specific to Mac OS 9 on the Mini or if it's the SSD I am using.

4. The audio only works with the headphone port and not the internal speaker. System beep and OS volume, configuration not working. Sound levels can only be just externally on the speakers themselves or on the application level. I know this is a known issue though.

5. Hot-swapping USB keyboards and mice doesn't seem to work. Not sure if this is related to the other mouse issue.

6. So far only analog over DVI has been working. Straight digital out doesn't seem to work. I mostly use an old Apple VGA CRT though, so it's only been an issue when trying to connect to HDMI displays without an analog adapter. This sounds similar to other people's issues though.

7. Oni crashes when I try to launch it with my Tinkerboy adapter plugged in, but that may be a weird compatability issue with Oni..

If anyone has any suggestions for tools that lets me map F-keys to key combinations like Cmd-1 or something that'd be appreciated. I'm currently using an Apple Desktop Bus Keyboard with a Tinkerboy USB adapter and it doesn't have any function keys. USB Overdrive doesn't seem to have an option to do this, and the one tool I found for PowerBooks doesn't seem to work.

Despite these quirks I'm very happy with it. Thank you to everyone who has worked on this!

I recently used the V9 disc to install Mac OS 9 on my 1.25 Ghz G4 Mini.

Overall it works pretty well, but I've observed a few issues.

My experience from your point list...

1. I have had this happen. When booting up, I do make sure I move the mouse. I do have USB Overdrive installed.

2. 1.42 GHz model, 1 GB RAM, PATA SSD, no crashes.

3. No delay on booting with the PATA SSD I have.

4. Right, known issue, went through a bit to get mine working better through a USB adapter, but no issues now.

5. Haven't tried this.

6. One thing to note: Mac OS 9 does not support 1920x1080 I believe as a resolution. That would be what you would get with most HDMI connections with modern displays. I have my Mini connected via DVI through a USB/DVI based KVMA switch to a 1920x1200 display and it works perfectly. Two other Intel Minis and a 2013 Mac Pro connected up also. I do use a couple of HDMI -> DVI adapters for this.

7. No knowledge on this.

As for the mapping of function keys, have never had to do that outside of an app that actually supports function keys.
