Below you will find the minimum requirements for running Reason:
! Note that these are the minimum requirements! You will benefit
from a fast computer with a lot of RAM, since this will allow you to
use more devices at the same time.

MacOS
• Power Macintosh with 604, 604e, G3 or G4 processor or better (see the note below). 166 MHz or faster.
• 64 Megabytes of RAM.
• CD-ROM drive.
MacOS 8.6 or later.
• 256 color monitor (or better), 800x600 or larger.
• A MIDI interface and a MIDI keyboard (or similar).
• OMS 2.x or later (included).

Reason takes advantage of the Altivec (Velocity Engine) instructions
used in the Macintosh G4 processors, which enhance performance.

Windows
• Intel Pentium 2 or better. 233 MHz or faster.
• 64 Megabytes of RAM.
• CD-ROM drive.
• Windows 98, NT 4.0 or 2000 (or later).
• 256 color monitor (or better), 800x600 or larger.
• A 16 bit Windows compatible audio card, preferably with an ASIO or DirectX driver. Microsoft DirectX (only if the card supports it).
• A MIDI interface and a MIDI keyboard (or similar).

Hi, chris!

If you don't mind, would you be so kind on elaborating how to properly update to 1.0.1? Quoting your remark at Macintosh Garden:

Quote
If installing the 1.0.1 update, after previously installing v1.0 you most likely will have to erase the extensions from the system folder as these files dont seem to be removed or overwritten properly when installing the 1.0.1 update.

We are basically referring to three extensions, right? Here are the differences between 1.0 and 1.0.1:

Reason Engine 1.0 (build 78) --> Reason Engine 1.0.1 (build 92)
ReWire 2.0.5 Version 1.2.5 (build 52) --> ReWire 2.2 Version 1.4 (build 60)
REX Shared Library (ReCycle) 2.0.0 Version 1.1.1 (build 17) --> REX Shared Library (ReCycle) 2.0.0 Version 1.2.1 (build 37)

So, just like you said, if one applies the patch to 1.0.1, the extensions at the system folder won't be overwritten.
That said, I deleted the aforementioned files from my Extensions folder and re-applied the patch. After that, the extensions were finally updated. But, at least in my case, whenever I try to run Reason 1.0.1 my computer freezes!
I tried to run the "patched" extensions on OS 8.6 and OS 9.2 and no luck... the system just freezes.
So, I had to revert to the old extensions to "fix" the program again. It runs fine, but the application version is naturally still 1.0 build 78.

Any idea on what I'm doing wrong?

Not really, I've burned both ISOs (program disk and sound bak) to CDs.

At this point it's worth mentioning that Reason doesn't provide a two-way street for MIDI and audio. You can't record audio with it, or route external audio to Reason effects, and you can't send MIDI data out. It's meant to be a self-contained system.

As the presence of 64 meters should suggest, the Interface provides up to 64 audio output channels, but if your soundcard is stereo, only two channels will be active. Likewise, up to 64 MIDI channels can come in, so that Reason's virtual instruments can be played by sequencers other than the program's two built-in ones.

most people never use reason in the way it was originally meant to be used.. connected VIA midi to other pre-existing systems!
as an external midi addon to other systems whether u are using logic, protools, cubase or LITERALLY ANY MIDI CAPABLE DAW you can use your existing daw on computer 1.. and then run reason on computer 2.. connect a midi cable.. configure reasons incoming midi and over 1 midi cable u can control 16 different modules using the 16 seperate midi channels on that one midi cable connection!!!!! and route each of the outputs from those modules to seperate outputs on a cheap multi output sound card such as the M-audio 410, or Gina20, or Gina24!

i mean just look at the image of what they referred to as the "reason hardware interface"
it pretty much eludes to this is how it was intended to be used...

MIDI IN DEVICE on top
AUDIO OUT Device on bottom..
MIDI signals in, audio signals out.. simple right?
*ahhhh eureeka moment* :) when reason is implemented this way, as an external midi module
there is no limit to what it can integrate with.. virtually any midi capable setup.

in fact i bet it could be argued that this is how to achieve best performance from the app... sidestepping and bypassing
teh whole REWIRE bullshit (which can be and was totally problematic to say the least)

it looks like reason 1.0 supported 4 midi inputs... of 16 channels each.. so up to 64 channels of midi (over a max of 4 physical cables, if your midi interface supported this many cables if not you would be limited to 16channels x however many 'midi in' ports u do have connected to your computer, these ports can be on seperate midi devices)

i suggest referring to:
http://www.macos9lives.com/downloads/manuals/reason/reason_1.01_whatsNew.pdf
as with any freezing of the system a methodical debugging is the only way to determine what the cause is
i know that the biggest change from 1.0 to 1.0.1 has to do with the asio driver..
are u sure that you had installed the asio driver file into the asio driver folder in the reason installation folder? (just covering the basics!)

also
pacatos problem could have been:
MacOS Virtual Memory
Reason will now not run at all if Virtual Memory is activated under MacOS

ensure that virtual memory is turned off!!!

nice shot of live v1 + reason v1 open together via rewire
a great combination -- both applications enhance each other 100% by providing the technologies that each other lack
"have your cake + eat it too!"
