stuck cursor after every mouse click (G4 desktop)
« on: September 27, 2014, 09:26:15 AM »

I can usually muddle my way toward a fix of any OS9 problem I have encountered, but this one has me baffled. I spilled perhaps an ounce of liquid on my keyboard and Kensington trackball some months ago. The keyboard has a cover, so no issue there, but perhaps a teaspoon or less went into the trackball cavity. I immediately unplugged it and wiped out the slight residue. Ever since (or perhaps shortly after), my cursor freezes, for as much as 30 seconds at a time, almost every time I click the trackball, and almost anytime there is no cursor movement for a short time. Coincidental? If I keep the cursor moving, it would likely not freeze, but obviously not practical. The problem has not deteriorated further, but persists and requires constant tapping on a mouse key to recover cursor movement. Did a short somehow damage something on the motherboard? I might add that I know the (original) PRAM battery is dead (has been for years) - been too lazy to replace. Could that finally be a factor?

Fixes I've tried beyond the most obvious, to no avail:
- different keyboard
- new out of the box Trackball
- booting from a second drive in OS9
- booting from a third drive in OSX
- plugging trackball directly into another installed SCSI USB card
- reset the PMU "Cuda button" (twice)

I would appreciate any suggestions, but I think this is a tough one. An ancient database that I use for invoicing is my main reason to stick with the G4, and I need to keep it working a bit longer.

which specific mac model?
which specific mac os version?

have u tried booting up with the extensions off? (holding shift on boot)
usually its reccommended to have the keyboard plugged into the native built in ports for keyboard + mouse
to keep compatibility with wake from sleep

have u tried booting up from an installer cd and checking the mouse movement?
i would be more suspect of some type of extension conflict / addon hardware conflict
i think its probably just a coincidence re: the mouse trackball being spilled on

another big possibility is that your hard drive is starting to kick the bucket
and maybe its corrupted an extension to do with mouse/usb?

As mentioned, I rebooted on TWO completely separate hard drives, one also running 9.2.2, and the other running OSX, so I can't imagine that any software issue or hard drive issue could possibly be at fault. I did finally order another PRAM battery, just to eliminate the possibility this be an issue, although the one the board has likely been dead for years.

hey michael
can u have a look at the ram in  this machine for me?
how many chips installed?
do they all have the same amount of chips on both sides? ie: single sided vs double sided
with 8 chips on each side?
this could be a problem to do with an incompatible ram configuration
if in doubt, take out all ram but 1 chip and try again

the ram thing is just to be safe but it sounds to me like u might be using the wrong version of os for the wrong motherboard
this sounds like an improper i/o driver for the usb chip that is on your motherboard

which version of os9 did u install? and can u tell a bit more about the specific model of mac g4 that u have
