Tascam FireOne-apparently not for OS9...
« on: March 19, 2014, 12:00:22 PM »

Hello there!
A quick word to say I just bought a Tascam FireOne for $50 new this weekend. It was on cleareance at my local Music store, maybe because these got dicontinued recently...

I tried it on various versions of OSX (10.3.9, 10.4.11, 10.5) and it all works very well.

Unfortunately, I see no hope of making it work on OS9: no trace of OS9 stuff in the included CDs nor on Tascam site, and no shadow of a trace of OS9 related stuff for this device on the internet...

It uses the Oxford OXFW971 chip. I don't know if there's any OS9 FW drivers for it. If you know, tell me!

Lots of tascam firewire interfaces works in OS9. I bet this is too much "new"

yeah, I also have a FW-1804 and it is well supported in OS9. I was hoping for the same for the FireOne but as you say, I guess it is too "new"...

Does it have a "stand alone " mode? My Focusrite Liquid Saphire 56 I boot on OSX, make adjustements and later go back to OS 9 for protools with Digi 001 via ADAT

No, it can't do that: it does not have SPDIF or optical connections. Only FW.
OS9's sound control panel sorta sees something as "DV" audio, but no sound fllows there...

Try with premiere and final cut pro 3. Maybe you can use a video editor as a multitrack .  ???

Well, I may try with Premiere (I don't have Final Cut) but I think I'll just stick using it with Peak or Reaper on OSX. Too bad transport controls, F buttons and jog wheel can't be mapped in Peak...

Premiere http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/adobe-premiere-40
Final cut http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/final-cut-pro-20

Hey, Chrisnova, we need more modern video editors. We have to search for Final Cut Pro 3.0. I had it from the pirate bay 8 years ago

http://tascam.com/content/downloads/products/308/FireOne_Release_Notes_1_00.pdf
did u examine the release notes?
release notes are dated 2007-07-15

applications "Current" at time of release:
Code: [Select]
sonar 7
live 7
reason 4
logic pro 8
m-powered 7.3
digital performer 5
cubase 4
nuendo 4
its most likely that this interface was designed for use with these apps..
all of which are pretty much the extent of how far u would want to push a g4 into osx territory
it may be better to aim for intel mac osx as this was also "Current" around 2007 time

Windows XP is probably the best thing to use with such an interface.
would allow you to use close to current software versions and higher level of cpu power.

tascam was one of the last manufacturers to create interfaces still being compatible with os9..
eventually they gave up tho supporting something so old... its amazing that they made the fw-1804
compatible with os 9 in the first place.. they did this in 2006!!! 2006 is definately the cut off point
for os9 compatible devices.. at least thats what my research efforts have led me to believe!

my system profiler on my powermac g3 b&W also shows "DV audio" but i have nothing plugged in so i think this is the built in soundports that are actually running off the firewire bus or something??????

see the pictures here: http://macos9lives.com/smforum/index.php?topic=1860.msg9142#msg9142
in this unplugged pic i have no device conected at all and it still shows dvaudio.. so that has nothing to do with the tascam device!
