Digital Audio CPU Upgrade Options
« on: June 17, 2026, 04:38:41 PM »

I have recently acquired a top end PowerMac G4 733 Digital audio. I got it to replace my Dual 500 Gigabit Ethernet model that had its PSU die on me. However, although they are similar in performance, its still a single cpu system. I would like to know if it is a viable option to put a dual 7450 cpu board from a quicksilver into this system, even if I have to run it slower.

Im only considering this because the Quicksilver and the Digital audio motherboard look very similar, but I did hear that the quicksilver has a worse DAC than the Digital audio.

Any thoughts on the matter?

Try to find a original QS GHz dual CPU. I have in my Digital Audio. With a 12 cm fan. You cant put a 12 cm fan on the QS

it is indeed possible to add dual processors to these, but afaik when you use quicksilver processors in the DA you need to add an additional 12 V cable and other minor modifications to make it work.

in theory the machine can use up to dual 1.8 ghz upgrades by gigadesigns or sonnet, but those are known to run hot quickly, i personally would not go above 1.5 - and use an additional fan, as PT said.

the audio converters are uninteresting, any 20 dollars interface will be better for pro audio than what is built-in.

the main difference between the DA and the later quicksilvers is that the DA already had 4x 64 bit PCI slots, which makes a noticeable difference for certain PCI accelerator cards and - if you ever find one - SATA II connectivity.
