MacTest Pro disc / Sawtooth?
« on: December 31, 2025, 02:48:40 PM »

Seeking version(s) that possibly work with the earliest produced Sawtooth Macs.

Of all downloaded so far from the Garden and the Repository — none will boot / run the Sawtooth.
“… the image files are likely not extracted properly from the source,
and therefore lack proper boot drivers on the image.”

https://macintoshgarden.org/apps/apple-mactest-pro

So if anyone actually has a working copy for the Sawtooth, it would make a very nice addition
uploaded to the Hotline sever along with the other Sawtooth software. (Or name reasonable price.)

Oh, and a Very Happy New Year to all! :)

According to documentation, any MTP G4 version after February 2000 should work.
I have the original April 2000 CD, but it appears to be identical to February 2000 edition.

Quote
This February 2000 Macintosh Family Diagnostics update mailing consists of one new CD: MacTest Pro for Power Macintosh G4 February 2000 (part number 691-2430-C).  For use with all PowerPC G4-based systems released as of February 2000.  The Finder name is MacTest Pro (G4).

The MacTest Pro (G4) CD has been qualified only on all Power Mac G4 systems (with either PCI or AGP graphics). The diagnostic tests on this CD have been qualified with Mac OS 9.0.2 (with Mac OS ROM file v3.5).

From what I read on the MacTracker Application, the hardware test CD is not supported.

That's Apple Hardware Test, the next generation of test CDs, that (apparently) are not supported. We're talking about Mac Test Pro CDs here.

Thanks ssp3. Apologies for tardy response.

Of all the downloads that I’ve burned and tried so far (red dots below) it seems that one noted as “February 2000” has come closest to working in a somewhat surprisingly odd manner. (Green dots signify files that I may yet try.)

I have tested so many downloads and burns in the last two weeks that I’m not absolutely certain as to which one is actually nearest working… as originally intended (bootable?).

“Get Info” notes file creation on August 9, 2000. While actual test results from this so-called February 2000 MTP software… suggests booting from the May 1998 or later MacTest Pro CD. (?) This particular February 2000 version will not Option-key or C-key boot at startup. However, I can run it from the OS 8.6 desktop.

In this instance, both the “Run MacTest Pro” AND the “MTP Emerg (G4)” seem to work under OS 8.6. [I wonder if same will be true after I update to versions of OS 9?]

aBc, maybe your burned Mac Test Pro CD is not bootable anymore? Who knows how the ISO was created. Does it boot any other, non Sawtooth, G4?

I vaguely remember that there was some warning back in the day about not mounting bootable CD images in Finder prior to burning them. Once you did that, the bootability was gone. Or something like that.

It's been a looooong time since I created any bootable CD image. If someone reminds me how to do it properly (in OSX), I can create a copy of my February 2000 original.

Thanks ssp3. Apologies for my slow response…
I’ve been “under it all” with far too many projects lately.

But I do hope to respond, tomorrow. ;)

“Tomorrow” now equals 25 days later? ???

Really no need to rabbit hole into the quagmire that is “how do I burn a disc from a downloaded file" / or from a disc already in possession… and deal with all of the possible variants (and all dependent upon just how a downloaded file was created in the first place). Instead… how to create a disc image that can easily be attached to a Forum post and be made available in that manner.

In this instance, your original February 2000 MacTest Pro CD.

In the following example I used an Apple Hardware Test CD (in place of your MTP CD). And after mounting the AHT disc and using Tiger’s Disk Utility, I simply chose “New Image”.

Then this selection box appeared…
(You might choose to enter MTP2000?)
And the rest, just as seen below.

This yielded me an AHT.cdr file. [You… maybe, MTP2000.cdr?]
Now you don’t need to burn that to a CD. Just manually change
the .cdr file suffix to .dmg — which will allow it to be attached to
a Forum post under this topic. Which I can then easily download
and burn to a CD here. MTP2000.dmg?

As the theory goes. Give it a shot?

Cheers!

Well, it appears that the original MTP CD contains several Apple drivers, just as I suspected. If you save the CD as volume, the drivers are left out. Maybe that was your problem?
Anyway, I made two images - one with drivers and one without. Good luck!

TYVM! Appreciate your time and effort.

Maybe I can get to this later tonight or tomorrow (and not twenty-five days later).
And maybe you’re correct about all of the other files I downloaded and burned.
If the various CDs were saved as a volume… leaving the drivers out?

Again, my thanks.
And I will report back. ;)

Hosanna!

YES… the MacTest Pro (G4) with drivers cdr.dmg worked. Burned disc inserted and machine booted, holding down the C key. It does use OS 9. The other .dmg file attempts (like a rocket) to use OS 8.6 to boot and it almost makes it completely through, until it just freezes.

Content from MacTest Pro (G4) with drivers cdr.dmg burned CD. C-key booted!

Run MacTest Pro (above) yields the following configurable tests Window:

Lots more choices than any ol' vanilla AHT!

Of course in haste, instead of using the above Main Window of “Run Mac Test Pro for G4” — I used the MTP Emerg (G4) for the first test run-through. (Results attached down below.) I’ll be running this much more in the coming days.

And admittedly, I didn’t think there would be much interest in this at all, but looking back through this thread I’ve noticed that some of the images have been viewed 66 times (currently). Maybe there are still more “active” Sawtooth machines “out there” and the MacTest Pro (G4) with drivers cdr.dmg might warrant a place on the Hotline server?

Thanks again ssp3. ;)

By the way, according to "Read Me" file, this CD is for  "..all Power Mac G4 systems (with either PCI or AGP graphics)", not only for Sawtooth.
One should also check Garden's other MTP disc images for their bootability.
I do have some more originals. If needed, I can copy others too. http://macos9lives.com/smforum/index.php?topic=6911.0

That’s interesting. Always on the lookout for other diagnostic tools. Given time, might have to test with Gigabit Ethernet (the next resurrection on my list), the Digital Audio machines AND perhaps even a Quicksilver.

However, there might be one little pesky caveat…

Black Netac SSD:

The first 8.6 installation partition on a Netac here was Mac OS Standard (HFS).
The second partition was also the same Mac Standard (HFS) for OS 9.
Third partition, Mac OS Extended (HFS+) for Tiger 10.4.11.

This approach allowed easy booting between the first two partitions
back and forth… but once booted into Tiger, selecting either of first
two partitions to reboot, would boot back into the opposite OS of what
was selected. Choosing OS 9, got OS 8.6. Choose OS 8.6 ya got the
machine booting back into OS 9. AND then whichever it didn’t boot into
…that System Folder was grayed out and needed to be re-blessed, in
order to boot back into it afterwards as part of this bizarre little dance.

For the subsequent, Red Netac… the first and second partitions were
formatted Mac OS Extended and the third, Journaled (HFS+).

But this MTP states that it can’t test the Extended Directory Structures.
(No reason not to run it for its’ other tests — and no more dancing!)
With the Red Netac as formatted, easy booting between all 3 partitions
and all three different operating systems. (TMI?)

One should also check Garden's other MTP disc images for their bootability.

Thanks. Most of the downloads that I tried / burned / tested — were from the Garden’s collection and as you said… If you save the CD as volume, the drivers are left out. That might be the Gardens’ case. (See Reply #4 above, in this thread for those versions that I did try.) And sure, if you’d care to prep and upload other versions of MTP that you have, I could burn and test them as well (before I finally move these Sawtooth machines from my living room and reclaim the space).

Compared to the old Quadra 950 that I ran for years (and the persnickety G3 Blue and Whites) the Sawtooth now seems blisteringly fast. I might keep one. ;)
