Pro Tools 5.1.1 for G3 w/ AM3: Serial?
« on: October 28, 2025, 12:51:28 PM »

Hello everybody,

I bought (well, I won with my summer job) an Audiomedia III card to use under Windows, it was a nice bundle at that time (1997?), and I quite recently acquired a cheap G3 Mac to put it in.

I'm not aiming to professional sound design (it was my first job but I'm now almost retired from Education as teacher), I just want to digitalize some old tapes and my Audiomedia III seems to be ok for that - I've successfully tested it recently under Windows and the Digitest application I discovered among many installation files didn't see any issue about the hardware installed into the G3.

Thanks to your forum I managed to install Pro Tools 5.1.1 (thank you Knezzen!) but now I'm facing the serial number validation problem. It's a long time I don't have the manuals and boxes of the bundle anymore.

I just navigate during a few days a lot of ressources but didn't find anything. I am honest and just want to use my AM3 card again on my old blue tower. Would it be possible?

Many thanks in advance.

I have been using that combo for years (G3B&W+AMIII)

I would use an modern Analog to Digital converter before getting to the AMIII. In this way you can get the full 24 bits path. Using the analog onboard you will get only 18 bits, enought for 2000' but not for today.

Search for iSerial/Serial Box for the password. It is not the same for PT 5 LE than for PT5 (TDM/MIX).

That is another reason to have the "old" download pages still intact and leading to the actual Hotline. We had the serial on every Protools download before the Hotline update. The retention inside MacOS9Lives! forum is smaller than before. Now you have to go to the "outsider" garden/repository to get to the serial when we had that info here before Knez/110 earthquake.

Many thanks to you, Protools5LEGuy, your first code worked like a charm!

Now, you‘re probably right about acquiring a better card in today’s standard but will my old (vintage, rare!) ears notice a big difference? At the moment I’ll focus on some sound transfer.

Thank you again (what a team!). :)

Protools5LEGuy is probably meaning otboard A/D and D/A converter, not another card.
Audiomedia III, when used as digital I/O only card is very very good.
I've been using it with all sorts of converters with very good results. Still have 6 of them ;)
A/D and D/A chips on AMIII are of cheap variety, though.

Hello, you're probably right, I read too quikly. Perhaps my Tascam DA-P1 could do the job? I have to check this.

Well, I think that an earthquake is good now and again to shake things up. A good and constructive alternative to complaining would be to find a new solution to the serial problem. But complaining and pointing fingers is always easier of course.

Post your ideas and solutions to the problems you are seeing in the Staff forum and lets discuss, Protools5LEGuy.

At least for serials put them in a text-file right next to the installer on the hotline server.

Good idea, Windoze. We’ve been thinking of adding a readme file to every directory with the info that used to be on the download board for each download respectively.
