Apple ADC CRT Studio Display (M7768) Advanced calibration tools
« on: October 01, 2025, 03:09:49 PM »

I have finally aquired a working Apple Studio Display (M7768) and I absolutely love it, its crisp, responsive, and the extra USB ports are very helpful. However, ive noticed that while the top half is perfect, the bottom half looks like it could use some geometrical adjustment, the problem being, I dont see any way of adjusting the bottom half independently of the top half through the standard monitor control panel, in OS 9, or OS X 10.1.5. The corners at the bottom seem to be stretched out, particularly the bottom right, There is no way for me to adjust these two corners without messing up the top half.

Another thing, is the gamma is slightly too high, the blacks arent truly black, and while its not particularly noticeable on lower resolutions (1024x768 and below), it is particlularly notieable at resolutions like 1280x1024 and 1600x1200.

Anyways, id appreciate If i could get some help to find this software(if it exists),or if im missing something else entirely.

I hope this can be fixed through software, but if not, Im not afraid to see if a recap would do the trick.

(pic attached is the problematic corner at factory defaults)

Recap won't help. Waste of time. You can try to degauss it using handheld degausser, if you have access to one.
But otherwise, unless you have all proper tools and specialized software, forget about it.
And, for correct color reproduction, it needs to be calibrated with the help of other tools. Do a forum search for more info

I see, I figured it would be quite a project, Some of the tools mentiond do not seem cheap at all, well at least I have a couple of old world Macs, but my 040 upgraded IIci is the only working one, But the Minolta color calibration tool and the Quantum Pattern generatar will seem like a pain to get a hold of. This seems like something I should hold off on when I do a full restoration of my G4 setup.

UPDATE:
I have not found a solution...
I got another M7768, it has the same problem.
The solution is to just ignore it, because these were their "cheap" offering. I suppose that this type of issue is to be expected of any Flat Tube monitor. I may be open to experimentation since I have a second one now thats in better shape than the first one I got.

Thank you all for the help

Strange advices notwithstanding (handheld degausser? good for laughs) the geometry of a CRT will never be 100% perfect, particularly on older units with aged components. Getting to 99% requires a deeper understanding than what is found on sites like this.

First job is to install a monitor gamma tool like Knoll Gamma or http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/gamma-corrector
and adjust the white point since it looks significantly off from D65

  • just a number

my sony trinitons had a degauss button built-in, which did the job pretty well.
