4 UAD1 in OS9 crash system

4 UAD1 in OS9 crash system

I installed Magma with MDD computers, three systems: 10.4, 10.5, and OS9. With 4 cards, OSX works perfectly, but it crashes in OS9. With three cards, it works perfectly, but 4 doesn't. I tried swapping the cards, but nothing changes. Software version 3.9 should handle them. Extension conflict? I have no idea. Can anyone give me some suggestions? Does anyone have 4 UAD cards in OS9 and they work? Let me know.

I only did a max of 2 (UAD-1 Mackie version) and a single Power Core or 2 Power Cores.

I think you might be either

1) Maxing out what the software was designed for
2) Hitting a PCI bus mastering ceiling or DMA conflict, since I believe those cards are bus mastering

I don't think it's the master bus otherwise it would give me problems even OSX. In OSX I tried to make some test songs overloaded with both UAD and Powercore plugins (I have 2) and they didn't give me any problems. I tried the Makie software in OS9 but it works with a maximum of two. In OS9 with software 3.9 in "configuration" it gives me 4 slots to use so the software allows for a maximum of 4 cards..uhm..a mystery. Yes, you could say "use 3 which is enough" but I'd like to understand where the problem is..let me know

it could be a difference caused by the OS which affect the PCI bandwith.

does it happen with the current project? or did you also try it with only 1 plug-in yet.

Interesting theory that the system has PCI bandwidth limitations... in fact it must be the system because with 4 cards it just won't boot! Perhaps some extension is causing a conflict? I'm attaching photos (sorry if they're ugly) with the three cards in the OS9 control panel (it also provides a fourth). In OSX with 4 cards it works perfectly, and the photo of the system that with 4 won't boot in OS9, gives me this strange screen right away.

hm. the UAD-1 is weak (compared to UAD-2 or powercore) and wont take much resources (in the sense of I/O), and the powercores beside it are only active after initialisation.

but what else could make the driver in OS9 see only 3 cards where it is definetely supposed to support 4? would be great you had a fifth to replace one.

Yes, I have a fifth one mounted on a PC. What would be the suggestion? Replace one with another? The cards are all tested and working. 4 on OSX are perfect, I start with OS9 and the computer freezes. I don't even get the initial window. The gray video starts and it freezes with a screen like the previous photo before the little smiling Mac computer even appears... I remove any of the 4 cards and OS9 starts normally. Mystery

well, that it works in OSX does not mean much, i had that same situation with SATA cards and USB devices that things worked only in either OS.

the strange thing is that it chrashes for you, it would be more logical if one card just does not work.

i mean it does not show up, isn“t it, so how can it crash...

@redstudio, try moving Magma host card to different slot. Also check old ProTools installation guides for recommendations on using expansion chassis.

Hitting a PCI bus mastering ceiling

Yes, that means the bandwidth... As discussed in other threads on a G4 I have seen issues with 3 cards (PowerCores and UAD-1) plus a 4th SCSI controller (also bus mastering); I am really thinking in OS X the drivers can turn off the Bus Mastering (if it senses more that one) on a few cards and thus they can all work without issues... although performance may be slower, just a theory, but in the PC world it is common to be able to switch bus mastering on/off via software/drivers which is sometimes done automatically
