What Antivirus Software Do You Use?
« on: June 05, 2025, 06:21:01 PM »

As I'm getting my iBook up and running, I've tried to have some version of antivirus installed as I download and reinstall software from various sources. I was curious, what software do y'all use for protection?

I started with a copy of Norton 6 that I had, but it would crash out with Error 1 whenever I'd try to do a system scan. I then installed Norton Utilities 9, and realized it didn't come with an antivirus update. So then I installed Norton 7 and tried to scan again, but again it would crash with an Error 1. So then I found a virus definition update from 2008, applied that directly to my System Folder, and was able to successfully complete a full scan with no problems detected.

So either the virus definition update was fraudulent and is now masking the virus that caused the crashes of previous Norton versions, or it fixed whatever problem the previous versions had with my install of 9.2.2. Either way, as far as I know I'm virus free!

So how about all of you? How do you stay safe?

And just as a heads up of a known virus, the December 1998 Mac Addict CD has the D variant of the AutoStart 9805 worm. This was reported in the January 1999 issue on page 14. So if you're like me and going through the Internet Archive's treasure trove of sampler CDs, be careful and keep your shields up!

Hello

I use Virex 6.1, some defs are from 2007...I doubt new OS9 viruses were created since that year

also, if you scroll down this page you'll find a link to get Virus Barrier (Intego) for free
