Acrobat Writer 5
« on: February 03, 2025, 09:46:52 AM »

Hello,
in order to make pdf-s with self-produced fonts dating back to 25 years ago, I would need Acrobat writer 5 compatible with Mac 9.2.

Those fonts are necessary for a book I have to write but the files will not be compatible with the publisher's new computers, so I need to give him pdfs.

Any ideas on how to get Acrobat writer 5?

Thank you, Daniele

Yes, the link MigMac posted is the latest Acrobat 5 for Mac OS 9.

Even if you did not ask for It, I would recommend "Jaws PDF Creator" for producing good printable PDFs. Acrobat Distiller can be a little picky, buggy and sometimes complicated. While JAWs works from every application as printer and produces good PDFs, especially if you like to include your TTF or PS fonts (what "PrintToPDF" for example cannot do).

https://macintoshgarden.org/apps/jaws-pdf-creator-v211

In general every Mac OS 9 computer should have JAWs installed to be able to print PDFs from every program in existance.

Hello again, together with my co-author, we were not able to use the solutions you proposed. He says we should try getting Adobe Writer 5, updated for Mac 9, directly from someone who uses it.
Can you help? If necessary, he would agree to pay for the programme [not sure what its price now would be, but you certainly remember how much you paid back then].
Thank you, D

Hmm, ... :-/ What solution? Acrobat? And what was the problem? Usually everything works easily

I do not understand. Acrobat does not need a special update to work with Mac OS 9

I bought my official copy of Acrobat 5 a few years ago at ebay for 39,- bucks. But it will only lead to the same files as at macintoshgarden, …

The page referred to above for Jaws includes a reference to Acrobat 4 and says it includes the ability to create PDFs.
Five is better, of course. In some ways.
I wonder if four would give you what you're looking for?

You ar mixing up several things.

Jaws PDF Creator is a standalone program that needs nothing than the Mac OS to create PDFs via Mac OS' internal printing system. You just have to install JAWs and you will be able to produce high quality PDFs from within every user program that can print!

The reference is only that JAWs is "similar fashion to Acrobat", so no, you do not need Acrobat to use JAWs. These are simply 2 different programs. And even in then next line is written, that JAWS can be used "as alternative to Adobe's Distiller versions 3 to 5", …

Quote from: JAWs PDF Creator Manual
The application is embedded into the printing system of your computer’s
Operating System so that it appears as a PostScript compatible printer to
applications running on that computer. You can produce a PDF file from
any document by printing the document to the Jaws PDF Creator printer in
the same way that you would produce hard-copy by printing to a real
printer.

Hello again, for some reason, my co-author is not able to install Acrobat Writer or Jaws on his computer following the proposed solutions, so he cannot produce pdfs and share them with the publisher.

We would ask if someone uses a programme to make pdfs (Acrobat Writer or something else) which is well working on a Mac 9.2.

In that case, it would solve our problems if he could share a copy of that programme for installation on my co-author's G4. It doesn't have to be for free.

Daniele, we are talking past each other, …

I am using both, Acrobat (and thus Writer and Distiller) as JAWs successfully at many computers. Even with the installers from macintoshgarden. These installers there work well!

That means "a copy of that programme for installation" will not be differentelly to the files at macintoshgarden, and the problem is somewhere at your side.

What does "is not able to install" exactly mean? What did you exactly try and what happened. Again: with any other copy of an Acrobat or JAWs installer, the same problems will occure.

Thank you for your answer Mat. I will ask Luciano to answer to you directly. The problem is his computer, since he has Mac 9.2 and G4 (and XPress as a desktop publisher) - I have a Mac OSX and can produce pdf files directly using Word (6.)

There is no problem! All the installers are for Mac OS 9 and all are working well at G4s. ;-)

We will finally have some good PDFs with your fonts embedded.

Hello, I have some more news from my co-author:

With JAWS, a message appears saying to find the right application to open it and proceed (no further specification about the application to be used)
He had the same problem with Acrobat: the system was telling him that, in order to open it, he needed a suitable CarbonLid.

I don't know what to say, since I use a different computer and that's why we need to work with pdfs, but he says that if anyone who uses Mac 9.2 manages somehow to make pdfs, he would be very grateful to have the right tip and ideally also the necessary software.

I am sorry to maybe sound rude, but that seems to be a basic missunderstanding in how to use your Mac, …
This message is usually shown, when you try to open files from the desktop, that are not for end users, and have thus no "creator".
JAWs is hooking into your Macs printing system, and you should be able to create PDFs from within other programs printing dialouge. Means: you do never have to "open" JAWs (or Acrobat writer). What program are you using for creating your files?

He had the same problem with Acrobat: the system was telling him that, in order to open it, he needed a suitable CarbonLid.
If you have a Mac OS 9.2.2 you should have the latest CarbonLib. Please provide us the informations, which Mac you are using with which Mac OS exactly.

if anyone who uses Mac 9.2 manages somehow to make pdfs, he would be very grateful to have the right tip and ideally also the necessary software.
For the 5th time, I am using Acrobat as JAWs at several Mac OS 9 computers and can create everywhere PDFs from within every program without problems, even with the installers form macintoshgarden. BTW, there are no other programs that can create PDFs and include your fonts as vectors, than these two.

Good evening, perhaps I can be of assistance. It appears your friend has been unable to even expand the binary file that is originally downloaded from the ‘Garden.

Your friend should install (if he has not done so) and open stuffit expander 6 or 7, then use stuffit expander to open the file. After that, the installer will be revealed.

Thank you for all your answers. I have been talking about them in detail with my co-author on the phone but unfortunately he is not able to unzip the files for Acrobat 5 or JAWs that I sent to him when I took them from the link you provided.
He would therefore ask to receive them uncompressed if possible. His email address is XXX, mine is XXX
He said this help does not have to be for free, and additionally he can thank with books on the sound system of different languages, if someone is interested :-)
Thank you for your patience

Daniele, …

1.) Never ever post your mailadress in public forums! You will at least get tons of scam and spam. Thus the forum has a feature to send mails to registered users, without making the mailadress public available.

2.) You need in every case a decompression tool. Go to https://macintoshgarden.org/apps/stuffit-expander-55 and try the download 2 which is a disk image usable by the program Disk Copy which should be at the computer, or the download 4 and see if you can install Stuffit to your mac. (Although I am wondering how an original Mac OS 9 does not have it already installed, … as it usually is installed with the system together. Anyways stuffit will make it possible to access the other installers.)

3.) There is no chance to send mac programs without compression over the internet. The file structure makes it impossible and your program files will arrive damaged. So we need to install Stuffit to your computer.

In general it is strange to talk remotely to you and you afterwards to your friend by phone, this makes things more complicated. He needs to sort this out, answer questions, and get used into uncompressing and installing programs. Your ongoing offer of money without success shows, that there is no other solution.

@ n8blz: good observation, I didn´t think about the fact that already the decompression of the installers posed a problem!
