Looking for os9 drivers for Adaptec PCI SCSI card. 2930cu
« on: July 30, 2024, 11:40:21 AM »

Hi!

I have a bunch of 50pin SCSI drives that need to be wiped, and I have a G4 Sawtooth 450DP running os 9.2.2 — the machine works great, but I just added a SCSI card (bought off eBay) and I can't find any drivers for it. On the Macintosh repository I found a toast.hqx file [linked here] of what was supposed to the drivers, but there was no formal "installer", just an extension file / a control panel file and a readme file. I dropped those into the corresponding system folders and rebooted / I saw the SCSI extension load on boot up, but the card is not recognized.

I'm just not 100% convinced I got a fully legit install from that .hqx file, and I'm also not 100% sure if the PCI card is functioning.  So I figured I could 100% rule out the card if I could get a proper "driver / software" install disc.

I've tried the Macintosh Garden / the Macintosh Repository / The Mac Driver Museum, but I haven't found anything that seemed like a proper install.

Any help/guidance appreciated.

When you say the card isn't recognized, what do you mean?

Have you tried just attaching a drive? I'm 99% certain I don't have any drivers for the Adaptec card in my Sawtooth. The System Profiler thing has some weird string, but it works. Can't remember the exact model number, though.

oh?!  I haven't plugged in the drives yet. I was just trying to see it in the system profile to make sure it was recognized, and it didn't seem to be there. But maybe it only shows if there's a drive also hooked up?  Forgive my SCSI inexperience

I’ve now tried the card in three different slots of this G4 (and one of those slots is a known working slot because there is a working PCI card in it that I pulled out just for this test.

It isn’t showing in the Apple
system Profile, and no joy after attaching a SCSI drive on the internal ribbon.

Trying to launch the PowerDomain control panel I get a message saying that no supported cards are found. (But this card is listed in the support list in the control panel.   It’s just not being seen.

I’m guessing the card is dead.

Is it a Mac version of the card?

If you have the Mac edition of the 2930 there is no need for drivers. SCSI Manager will recognize it.

The OS9 driver is held on the card's ROM. I confirm it should appear in the System Profiler and Power Domain CP.
You might have Windows version of the card.(

Nope — the card's eprom clearly shows it's the Mac version (the sticker is still intact).  I tried it across two Macs now, and it doesn't appear in either (both running 9.2.2) — I'm presuming the card is actually just dead. All great insights from everyone, and I appreciate the quick & generous sharing of knowledge.

I'm just gonna take a drill to the drives and move on.
