And here is a permanentely working link to a demo version of 3.9, which seems to me to be the latest 9 release (?):
https://web.archive.org/web/20061211200317/http://64.151.103.32/download/bbb/InstallBBB39Demo.sit

But we do not have any option to obtain it anmore, right? Or did somebody contact the manufacturer Audio Ease in the last years?

while it might look crappy, barbara is a very fast girl and has a relatively good SRC. there is no real alternative to it unless you want to boot into OSX.

I would try Audacity. Free and modern, even for Mac OS 9.

The shame is that on https://www.audacityteam.org/download/ takes you to https://www.fosshub.com/Audacity-old.html and there is not the 0.99 version IIRC. But I have it somewhere, so I will upload it if noone does

There used to be an allegedly-unstable Audacity 1.1.1 beta for Mac OS 9, as well. Some discussion on it at:

http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/audacity-100

If anyone backed THAT one up, that'd be pretty cool.

if you do not need batch processing, quicktime can do the very basics, too. (not sure about SDII now)

none of them is very elegant...

Jubadub, there are old, pre v2.x sources still available here: https://mirror.sobukus.de/files/src/audacity/
Can't you or any other of the programmers here compile something better than 1.1.1 for OS9?

EDIT. I've dug up 1.0 source, maybe it can be improved further :D

We can try. The first step would be to try to compile that 1.0.0 version you just located as a starting point (thank you for finding and sharing it!). Sometimes there's no real secret to it, especially if a project file is included, which normally means opening it and clicking on "Make" or "Compile" or "Build" or whatever. If we had 1.1.1 beta, and its source, we could use it as a "stepping stone" to try to reach 2.x heights, but without it, it will be a greater leap (and effort, and higher chances of needing to fix up whatever is not working on Mac OS).

Personally, I'd not mind at least trying, but this is my "compile todo list" right now:
- latest source code of "MacZip";
- "Bochs", any version (yikes);

And my "Mac coding todo list":
- C game;
- Try to add useful things to md5classic (the new program by the Garden's legendary cracker "siddhartha77");
- REALbasic app related to Mini vMac;

Part of the REALBasic app work also entails digging up / documenting all compiler options for Mini vMac 3.4.1, which I need to assemble into a nice text document (as I did for version 3.5.8 ), and comparing the changes between that and the 3.5.8 document. For reference, there are 85 or so compiler options for version 3.5.8.

So, maybe I can add "Audacity 1.x -> 2.x" to the list, but I'm already very slow to complete any project, so maybe someone else more skilled / less unavailable can do it? Else I can try to get to it over time.

Are there some cool benefits to Audacity 2.x that no other audio player app has in Mac OS 9? That could definitely attract potential developers to look into it, especially if it's a very cool feature.

I don't think so. For 2 track work Peak is pretty mature in OS7-9 and so is Spark. Those with Digi hardware can use Sound Designer. One can also edit audio in all multitrack/sequencer apps to a certain extent.

Protools5LEGuy praised the Audacity in the post above, so I went to check where they were in 2002. At the very beginning, I have to say. By version 1.2 they've dropped OS9 completely.

(But it was fun to dig around all those Linux/Unix depositories out there looking for old Audacity sources).

I've always used SoundApp for file conversions... don't know how it compares to the others mentioned. Mostly just doing a few files here and there and it seems to work well enough. I'll have to check out Barba, etc. and see what I'm missing or if they are easier to use or whatever. :D

wasnt that 16 bit only? i am sure it was top notch when apple system 3 came out. :)

luckily most music programs can use SDII and AIFC, but the conversion need quickly comes with wav on OS9.

worst is that many programs have limitations when it comes to rate and bitdepth. this often obstructs creative paths. the daily use of soundhack or sonicworx is not possible in a floating point enviroment.
