Got the FW Audiophile recognized and working on my PowerBook G3 Pismo running OS9.2.2. However, audio output has regular periodic crunchy distorted spikes. If I had to guess, it would be something to do with the hardware polling the OS is performing. At any rate, it is unfortunately completely unusable in such a state. I've tried both the available OS9 installers (1.0.2 and 1.0.4), swapped out the firewire cables, and tried running it bus-powered and mains-powered, but there's no difference.

The silver lining: It does at least seem to work great on my PowerBook G4 12" 6,2 running OSX 10.4.11 and the FireWire_OSX_1_6_Build_1174 firmware.

I've attached the audio output from the OS9 Pismo if anyone is curious (zipped mp3).

Regardless, thanks everyone for your sleuthing, documenting, and help getting the drivers!

A not-so-much-PowerBook, apparently! I guess the firewire ports on the Pismo were designed for external storage more than anything. It was worth a shot though. Very curious to know if it works on your TiBook.

Strange. I had that interface and a 500mhz Pismo back in the days and did a lot of songs on Mac OS 9 with it. It surely must be some kind of driver incompatibility going on or such? Are you using ASIO drivers with your DAW?

Interesting. Mine is a 400mhz, but this doesn't feel like a CPU speed issue. I've only tested using the Sound Manager, not ASIO. Will have to do some research to see how to set that up. You've got me thinking now that it may be some extension getting in the way. I'll have to try disabling all non-essential extensions to see if it makes a difference.

I was thinking about this as well, but had no idea if such a thing existed. Will have to see if I can find one - something tells me they may be difficult to find!

While it is evident that the M-Audio FW 410 AND the M-Audio FW Audiophile are similar and can share some of the same software, they ARE NOT the same. Many people worked for many years in order to actually provide the solution to “downgrade” the firmware on the M-Audio FW 410 and any further posts concerning the M-Audio FW Audiophile can only possibly confuse and dilute the original topic.

So does this topic need to be locked and thus prevent anyone else from adding to (and possibly confusing) the original topic — or should those wishing to consider matters concerning primarily the M-Audio FW Audiophile… simply use this as a reference point / AND THEN begin another topic related to the M-Audio FW Audiophile specifically? (Same goes for the similar, M-Audio Firewire 1814 units.)

This seems to be the most sensible solution, as this topic has already gone 4 pages - and with 31846 views. Topic: PSA: M-Audio Firewire 410 Firmware Downgrade Success! Now Working in Mac OS 9 is now locked and for reference only.

As the topic stands now, you might find yourself reading through and then wonder… hey, how and when did we shift over to the M-Audio FW Audiophile or the M-Audio Firewire 1814?

Now, start another topic / question elsewhere and you can provide a link back to this topic for reference as may be necessary.
