Help connecting USB Audiophile w/ Live 4 in OS9
« on: August 16, 2023, 10:57:27 AM »

Hi everyone,

I recently finally got my hands on a M-Audio Audiophile interface with the software and everything.

I installed OMS 2.3.8 first, and then I did the install included in the disc for OS9 (I'm running 9.2.2 on my MDD)

When I go into ableton live 4 preferences I see the MIDI inputs listed but not the audio in left and right inputs listed. What step am I missing to be able to record instrument audio signal through the interface and into my DAW. I hope i explained this all properly.

Thanks in advance!

OMS is only for MIDI. Did you put the ASIO driver in the folder next to the Live application?

Hi!

Yes on the desktop after I used the install, a file came up on the desktop called Audiophile USB ASIO came up, so I dragged that into the Live folder "ASIO Drivers" under resources. I'm confused at what else I need to do. When I open preferences in life and inputs I don't see one that says ASIO. I see "computer keyboard", "Audiophile USB", "AudioPHile USB, Audiophile USB, Audiophile.." (this one gets cut off), and "? IAC Bus #1". Under my audio channels there is no option that gives me signal coming from the interface when it's turned on.

any help is much appreciated! I apologize if I'm missing something simple.

I can't remember precisely how the Live 4 prefs look right now, but you want to be looking at the audio settings - IAC is again related to MIDI, so you're no in the right place. There should be a drop down that probably defaults to Sound Manager where you can switch it over to ASIO, and then select the Audiophile as a device.

I think it is "something simple". You should read the instructions. I don't have any Audiophile gear but I downloaded the manual from M-Audio and immediately learned that the "file" that appeared on your desktop is actually a shortcut to the Audiophile control panel where all of the settings that you need to make it work reside. Pull it back out onto the desktop and double-click it.

……and read this.

Usually, the M-Audio installs place a "Folder" NOT a file for the interface with the ASIO driver and sometimes a readme in the Folder, if you dragged a Folder, then it's a no go, open the Folder on the desktop and hold "alt" and drag the individual ASIO file (sometimes more than 1 if they give v1 and 2 versions) to th ASIO folder under your app.  You "alt-drag" because it will leave the original file on the desktop so you can drag it to other apps at will.  It must be copied to every app you use.

its a great app and very capable, v4 is the first version with "Midi clips" so its actually still really useful ;)

In my brief testing, I found MIDI with Live 4 on OS 9 to have really bad timing compared to Digital Performer. Anybody using it with hardware?

ive been using it back in the days .. early 2000s now back on Live 4 and OS 9 since few days ..
yes the midi timing is not the best deff some laggin .. but it could be due to latency 512 in buffer setting .. that i cant make lower since its iMac G3 built in audio.
i manually shift midi notes in sequence to get the timing right .. its time consuming but its ok..
there are only 3 tipes of swing 8 / 16/ 32 notes with no percentages ... so i again record quantised and than shuffle the notes manually to achieve the desired swing.
its no Akaki MPC with its non percievable latency ;)  !
wonder if ATARI ST has beter timing since it hase MIDI built in or is it a myth?

The Atari (ST, STe, Falcon, TT etc) has rock solid MIDI timing. Nothing on the Mac comes close. On par with the MPC :)

OT.
Quadra 605/LC475 (minimal hardware) with full 040 processor, overclocked to 40MHz, OS7, using Cubase 3.1 (not VST, not TDM), using MROS and not OMS, using primitive  (TTL chips only) 1 in 8 out MIDI interfaces on both Mac ports is almost indistinguishable from Atari ST. Been there, have assembled that system and run tests with late friend of mine who was very successful eurodance producer and was absolutely anal about midi timing. He ended up using Q605, despite having ST and Falcon at hand, because it was more convenient.

So the older computer with less powerful chips and processors the beter the MIDI timing..interesting .
Cause older MPCs like I use MPC3000 and MPC200xl have great timing..especially MPC3000 is just very pleasant ..if you laying out drums ..with your own groove feel or using its swing algorythms ..is unmatched.  Not sure older cubase has those swing values in early versions..or o might be wrong?
But it's tempting to get the Atari ST or Quadra or maybe other 68k mac for midi sequencing
though the only oldest mac I've got at home is iMac G3 and it's sluggish ..with its USB MIDI

I wasn't talking about latency, I meant jitter/imprecision.

the scheduler in early ableton versions was terrible. that is problem number 1.

then there is the way you connect periphery, which is another topic. the atari is unbeaten here*), followed by serial interfaces. USB are the worst. yet USB at least has a bandwith high enough to use multiple controllers, which was close to impossible before.

topic 3 is the resolution of midi software. here the atari was worse than our "modern" MacOS9 programs, which to my knowledge all support up to 1920 ppq (which is far higher than the ~0.7ms per 3-byte block a physical DIN MIDI connection offers at best - and also fast enough to fit into the current audiovector size of the VST interface (32 samples - at 44 khz that is roughly about what DIN midi can do), so that you play virtual instruments literally latency free.)

on an up-to-date system you can have all of that at once: you can mostly switch to software synths because computers got faster, the clock resolution nowadays ranges between 0.1 ms and one sample at current samplerate, midi and similar data within software can be sent parallel (hundreds of bytes at the same logical time), and when you really need physical outputs, there is copperlan & co (based on 10gbit ethernet.) which outperforms serial in timing accuracy and USB in bandwidth.

*) all that is only true when your music consists of straight beats and in the same tempo as the sequencer plays. free recording, or complex polyrythms, and that theory about good midi timing of ataris is dead.

so , as i understood Atari ST /Macintosh cant record unquantized "freestyle" lets say "jazz" style  playing of complex rhythmic  notes patterns ?  .. like Logic Audio does or Ableton in no quantise with low latency settings on modern CPU macs for example , or MPC can do in no quantize or Hires modes ? i am confused ..
