Steinberg Free Filter
« on: September 14, 2022, 07:47:40 AM »

This plug has aged well.

Still used by professionals to "steal" EQ from X song and apply it to Y song.

https://www.soundonsound.com/techniques/steinberg-freefilter-spectralab

A friend told me that those algorithm were too powerful for that age and the people that developed it (Spectral Design) slowly dissapeared on the cinema industry

Yes, correct, the updated version is in the Mastering Edition.

We have the complete ISO image here:

I put a lot of hours into that plugin back in the day, but never really used it on a final mix.  It is a great as a tool to analyze a mix, but the whole theory of ripping off "Song A" cause you can apply the EQ to "Song B" is kinda a load of horse-shit.   Song B, even in the same genre, is going to have different elements and you are not going to get away that easy.  Applying "Song A" EQ to "Song B" is just gonna give you 2 songs with the same level of each frequency band, not 2 good songs.

Now that I made it sound worthless, I will say it is a great tool to baseline certain mixes if that is what you are going for.  Obviously, a "Hip Hop" producer is not gonna want to apply a 1960s Rolling Stone song EQ to his new 2022 hit, but at least you can get a feel for what was popular for a specific genre during a specific era.  I remember specifically, I was helping out a friend that was having trouble with a mix that told me... I want that "Motown" sound on the drums and my sampled kit is too "bassy" for the sound, so we fired up Free filter, and were able to get a pretty good approximation of both the snare and Kick on the song he wanted to emulate.  These days, with much better spectral analyzers and the ability to rip vocals out of a track and look at just the music, kinda makes free filter obsolete :(   However, this is one of those plugins that with greatly help you learn the craft of mixing in the box and teach you more by messing with it than reading a book about EQing a mix

Match EQ is better used to calibrate (frequency response) than to get EQ from X song.

This can be used as "Mic Modeler" too, matching 2 different mics to sound as if they were couple.

Give Mac Gyver Free Filter and he will teach us even more uses.

Never underestimate a soundengineer willing to use a tool.

beside the type of filters used in them the other two main issues is that
2. you have all the same frequencies again across possible parallel used
instances - and 3. most GEQs also have harmonic steps (like octaves, thirds)
in itself, which is also problematic for the sound result.

GEQs and other fixed frequency filters play almost no role in mixing and
mastering for those reasons. fully parametric wins in every aspects for sum signals.

yet on OS9 we´re a bit short on GEQs and therefore should probably be happy
with the 3 plug-ins that exists.

I remember very well that, back in the days, there was a tdm plugin for "studio linearization". Anyone remember the name?

freefilter almost came out for TDM, too - a few weeks earlier and it would have happened.

you know of a tdm?

There is a Magneto beta (with other name) from Steinberg that was TDM, but it was just as stable as Tuna (The tuner from Steinberg). Sadly you loose stability using the original Steinberg TDM plugs.

I remember that one or two of these TDM Steinberg plugs was on the "unused plugins" folder from TunedbyTad/Protools4 TDM pack

so you are a long time user and huge fan of the stuff but you do not know them. and now you want "info" about the beta version instead of using the regular release.

what kind of "info" could that be? other than there is a beta build of every software?

i have serious problems to follow your thoughts sometimes most of the time.
