OS 9 install on Digital Audio G4 not working
« on: February 19, 2022, 03:52:02 PM »

Hello all.

Today I got a 733 mHz Digital Audio Power Mac G4. I did a fresh install of OS X Tiger, and decided to Install OS 9.

I got out my retail 9.2.1 CD, and put it in the SuperDrive. Tiger mounted the disc, I selected it from Startup Disk in System Prefs and restarted. When the computer restarted, it just brought me back to the Tiger desktop. I also tried a burned copy of 9.1, and that did not work either.

I also unplugged the HDD and booted with nothing except the DVD drive and the disc in it, and all  got was the blinking folder with a question mark on it.

So what can I do to get OS 9 onto my new Power Mac?

Thanks in advance.

Does the hard drive have OS 9 disc drivers installed?

Have you tried booting with the C key held down?

Set up your partitions using Drive Setup on the OS 9 install disc.  Install OS 9 first, then install OS X.  Don't install the two OS'es on the same partition, this will cause issues.

Alternatively, here are instructions for installing OS 9 from OS X.

Does the hard drive have OS 9 disc drivers installed?

Have you tried booting with the C key held down?

When I erased the drive in disk utility, there was no option for OS 9 Drivers.

Yes, I did hold the C key down and all I got was the folder with a question mark.

Sadly, The OS 9 Disc Does not boot so i cannot use drive setup.

Installing OS 9 drivers is the ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY first step. Nothing will work if this is not done.

Did you by chance erase the Partition called Mac HD instead of the HARD DRIVE itself? This will NOT work.

On the left side of the Disk Uitility window, you must select the name of the  HARD DRIVE which begins with it's size.

This works for me using Disk Utility 11.1 (leopard)  or  Disk Utility 10.5.6 (tiger) on any PPC Mac.

he is not able to boot into OS9 from CD already, this should not require the HD to have the driver.
