Apple Cinema Display ADC (22-Inch) - light on but no screen
« on: September 19, 2021, 03:31:07 PM »

Hi,

I have an Apple Cinema Display ADC (22-Inch). It suddenly stopped working.
The on/off light of the display stays on, even with my G4 turned off. When I power up the G4 the on/off light is on but the screen remains black.
I plugged the display in another (spare) G4 and the problem also occurred/remained.

However, the G4 (standard NVIDIA Graphic card) works fine with a VGA compatible display.

Any suggestions?

Regards,
Arjen

Well, from what I read things point towards the Cinema Display being ill. Just one question: Did you move the graphics card from your G4 to the second spare G4 or did the spare G4 have its own card with an ADC port? I'm asking to rule out a problem with the graphics card.

Did you move your Mac or Display or clean it before the problems occurred? I found the connector on my Full HD Cinema Display being a bit flaky at times, so it would show the symptoms you describe if not 100% seated correctly.

The spare G4 has it's own card. The strange thing is that the G4 was shut off and the cinema display too before the problem occurred.
Out of the blue the light of the display turned on. Didn't move or change anything.
And now it is totally unresponsive. Quite annoying.

Unfortunately, my knowledge of the inner workings of Cinema Displays is very small, so I'm sorry I can't help a fellow Cinema Display user any further. Someone else with more knowledge here?

From my experience, whenever stuff suddenly powers on  / off it usually pointed towards some capacitator problems. If it's sitting there dead now there's no point in it, but before I was wondering if the USB ports on the back were still supplied with power. Though if it's dead now, there's no point in it. Are there any good repair manuals for ADCs? I have never checked ...

Hi,

I think the time has come to say goodbye to my cinema display.  :(
I had it working for 5 minutes and now it's dead again. I'm done with it.

Thanks for the responses!

You might want to evaluate the option of having it professionally recapped. If it worked for a few minutes before failing again it's likely just a small issue that might could be fixed. I don't know where you're located Arjen (Nederlands?) but go search for such a store (Amiga of Rochester seems to be great for U.S. customers; I've heard good things about i-beyer.de in Germany). Like I said, I know too few about the inner workings of ACDs but just ask for a quote and see if that beats buying a new-old one.
