iBook G3 locking up after connecting 2nd-gen iPod

I recently bought an iBook G3 to restore some early iPods from my collection, but as the title states the whole system locks up when I connect one.
I should mention that I'm very new to MacOS 9 and haven't owned a compatible device before now, so I don't know if this is a common issue or not.
