Hey all, I am struggling to install the macos9lives disk image, I’ll give you the details:

G4 2002 QS modified from 800mhz to 1.8ghz Sonnet CPU WITH 1.5gb RAM.

All cards removed except graphics card leading to Apple Cinema Display.

Boots fine from the burned CD, I can initialise the hard drive (original Apple 40GB drive and the install goes fine and reports success ( with added squeaky toy effect driving my dog mad haha!).

I then boot from HDD and it loads first 3 extensions then freezes. Fine I thought, zap the PRAM, load with extensions off...I do that and then it gets to the end of the progress bar and just sits there.

I feel like I’m missing something obvious but can’t rethink what.

By the way, I had 10.5.8 on this internal drive running perfect before I nuked it for 9.2.2, so I know RAM,CPU and HDD are all ok.

I removed and reseated everything, blew out all dust, did all the obvious things... no dice... what am I missing? Thanks guys...

After trying various install disks I’m coming to the conclusion that this machine will never boot into os 9...

If I’m only going to get 10.5.8 out of it I might end up selling or looking for another machine... Methinks I’ll keep eyes peeled for the holy grail G4, the dual 1.25ghz MDD (which I used to own but sold as it was a cantankerous old beast that used to sulk and not boot for no reason sometimes!)

One of my absolute favorite machines here, set up just like above… and it does boot OS 9.2.2. Stable and without fail.

If my memory serves me well, I had the 800 MHz up and running OS 9.2.2 before I ever swapped and installed the Sonnet. This might not actually be necessary for you to go back to that, but I’ll need to review the machine here to try to remember what I actually had to do (install-wise). I think it had a great deal to do with some 9.2.2 multi-processor file/extension that needed removal AND some processor / driver update for the Sonnet (from Sonnet?) that also needed installed? Maybe someone will chime in here before I get downstairs to review my actual set-up in a few hours from now?

In the meantime, don’t lose hope… it’ll work! And when it does… JOY!

No OS 9 before (with the Sonnet already installed)? If true, then you’re probably not seeing this splash screen at boot… via OS 9.2.2? Or are you?


ALSO: In my OS 9 System Folder / Extensions, there’s a folder titled “Multiprocessing”. It’s empty - I trashed the contents which were installed with 9.2.2.

Well (sorry) it looks like you might have to fall back to an original Quicksilver processor to do the Sonnet upgrade install for OS 9.2.2. If you haven’t got one, drop me a PM with address and maybe one will come across the pond for you. (I've a loose 867 MHz... so I'd only need to locate a heatsink for it here.)

This section describes the installation of software required to support this Encore/ST G4 in your computer under Mac OS 9.2 when it is a selectable OS in Startup Disk (in System Preferences). Please note if you ever start up your computer under Mac OS 9.2, you MUST run the Crescendo/Encore Installer before you install this upgrade card. If you do not run the application, your computer will not operate with the processor upgrade installed.
 (Well maybe in OS 10.3.5 or above it will.)

So, if your machine didn’t already have some previous flavor of OS 9 present and the Sonnet installer v2.3.1 had not been previously run… looks like the Sonnet Technologies Crescendo/Encore CPU Upgrade Card software v2.3.1 will be necessary. AND you can get that from Macintosh Repository or Macintosh Garden. Described here by Mac Repository as: “Installation software for Sonnet's Crescendo and Encore series of G3 and G4 CPU upgrade cards, no longer available for download from Sonnet's website.” (BUT you’ll need an original QS processor.)

I can’t think of another workaround at present. So if you don’t have an original processor (or can’t temporarily borrow one from a mate) let me know. Really, it is worth it. In the meantime I’d dual partition that HD or add another one and load an OS X flavor… keeping a partition (or another drive) available for eventual OS 9.2.2 with the Sonnet... AFTER the eventual temporary fallback for installation.

Anyone else have a possible workaround / solution?

what does the sonnet installer do to other than installing a modified powerplug and removing multiprocessing?

i have a 733 which i dont need and i woudl offer him to exchange it against that bad non-working sonnet.

erm, why is the old processor required to do something with the firmware installer? what could a processor card tell an installer app? i am in the dark here.

This is great chaps, thank you! I have located another QS near me, I’m going to pick that up and see what can be done. In the mean time, I was thinking this... seeing as I have an install of OS9 on that hard drive now and I can boot the system from the installer CD, if I have my external FireWire hard drive connected which has any necessary files I need to make this work, could I not just boot from the macos9lives installer CD then transplant the required files into the right place from the FW drive to my main boot volume?

Or even boot into OS X and do the file insertions?

so that would mean the only reason why it only works with the old processor is that the new one cant boot into OS9 without it, and so you just have to install it elsewhere and boot into target disk mode?

what were they thinking at sonnet? that we only have one mac around?

So... progress... I reinstated the OS X 10.5.8 drive I had previously installed, booted from that then manipulated the OS 9 files and folders within... I moved all the extensions and control panels into folders named "Extensions pending" and "control panels pending".  I then moved the "sonnet processor upgrade" extension into the extensions folder (with the space at the front so it loads first)... and voilá!  It boots into OS 9!

So, Now I know I can get into OS 9, I then put all the extensions and control panels back and boot.  I see the Sonnet splash screen but it only loads a few extensions and then craps out...

So next step is work out which extensions are causing the problem and if memory serves, the only way to do it is put one in, reboot and wait.  If that works, do the next one and so on until I find it.

Anyone know another way?

This has been quite the mission and I have to say I'm enjoying myself!  The other QS never came up so I'm still on this one for the minute... fingers crossed I can get something sorted!

Buried somewhere in this looong thread is a reference to the "Multiprocessing" folder.
Inside there is a file "Apple CPU Plugins". THAT needs to be removed. It's also possible (I say possible because this may be true only if you have dual procs) that you need to replace that file with a modified version.
So, use OSX to pull that out of the OS9 System Folder and try again. If it still hangs, you can next try replacing it with the modified one you can find here:

Label half the extensions Yellow and then drag them into the Extensions Folder. Restart and pray during boot.. If it boots, change to labels from Yellow to Green. If it doens't boot, Remove half the extensions and label the remaining ones Red. Reboot and pray some more. If it boots, change the Red label to Green. If not, remove the Red ones and replace with the Yellow ones. Reboot, pray and if it boots, change Yellow to Greeen, etc. etc. Then repeat with the second half.

There is also a utility, which I believe is called Extensions Manager, which makes this even easier.
