Mac turning on by itself?
« on: August 19, 2019, 03:34:08 PM »

I noticed that my 9600 mysteriously was booted yesterday, so I turned it off. I went to sleep, then woke up to it on again. I came into the studio and shut it down, but as soon as I did it... turned on again. The Shut Down command is now functioning as a reboot command. It refuses to turn off. Why is this?

That used to happen constantly with my 8100 and it drove me nuts!! It would turn on every night and I would turn it off, then 30mins later it would turn on again. It would get worse and start up again as soon as I turned it off!
I can't remember if I ever fixed this, but have you tried resetting PRAM, PMU etc? I removed the PMU battery from mine, maybe this solved it? It was too long ago...

Remove the preferences of the energy saver control panel.

Remove the preferences of the energy saver control panel.
THIS is the correct answer. Energy Saver has the ability to turn the computer on and off at selected times.
If the prefs get scrambled, weird shit happens.

I hadn't booted it in like 2 months though. Suddenly it came alive after 2 months, then the issue started. Hmm.

Well, there is always the possibility that something else less likely has gone wrong, but a simple trashing of prefs is a common first repair step.

I remember that I was trying client/server software but I didn't get the internet connections to work. I trashed the preferences of I think the AppleTalk, TCP/IP, and Internet control panels. Then it did what I configured in the control panels.

I used the ASR method to restore my old settings recently. It was fine for a few days, then whammo, it starts up in the middle of the night again. I reset the PRAM and everything too. Trashing the preferences doesn't seem to work either.  ???

How do I reset the PSU?

Try the CUDA button.

I'll try this too.

cuda and pmu reset is the same thing. it is the button beside the battery and it has to be pressed for about 5 seconds while the machine is off.

some computers have tow buttons then it is the one closer to the battery. :)

When you said PSU I thought you meant that there's a button on the PSU (Power Supply Unit). I'll get to trying this and see if I come up with anything. The last time I did a CUDA reset was a couple years back when I got all of my 9600s perfected.

I finally got around to resetting CUDA by using that little button, and while I was at it I reset the motherboard by removing the battery and power cycling it. All was fine for a few hours, then whammo, my Mac turned itself on again. Once again, every time I click Shut Down, it turns right back on like I'm hitting Reset.

So far I've reset the PRAM, reset CUDA, as well as the motherboard, plus started off with a fresh OS install to see if that would fix the power management extensions. Nothing worked.

Maybe there's something funny going on with the ADB port or keyboard I'm using since there's a power button on it. I'll do some experimentation and see what happens.

I think this is an ADB issue after all. I unplugged the ADB cable and for two days now it hasn’t started by itself.
