upgrade the G3 Wallstreet from OS 9.0 to 9.2.2 but I got stuck
« on: December 30, 2018, 01:00:15 PM »

Hi folks,

this is my first post in this community of Mac old timer lovers.

I recently became addicted to my old Macs: G3 Wallstreet, SE and PowerBook 190. I just bought a Mac II and ordered the famous Floppy emu.
They are all working, except the 190 for which I lost the power supply sad. And except for the floppy sad of course

Anyhow, my current small project is to upgrade the G3 from OS 9.0 to 9.2.2 but I got stuck. I found a sit upgrade but my OS is sadly in Italian  and I do not find the way to bring it to ENG, so the upgrade does not work.
I found a 9.2.2 system folder, I tried with Clean-Install from Marc Moini but again I can not find my way out.
Apparently I lost my dexterity with old Macs sad, I was fast in the 80s :)

I do not want to format the HD to install a 9.2.2 from scratch, the HD is plenty of really nice software I want to preserve!

Can someone please give me some guidance or suggestion on how to proceed?

I'd like first to have a fresh OS 9.2.2 in English preserving my  software.
The second project would be to install a Flash card in place for the IDE HD with 10.4 Tiger

Many thanks indeed
best

i think you need to use the upgrade files "international" depicted by -Z ?

given the prices of SSD's have come down so much, theres not much point in investing in compact Flash.
you might aswell get a sata SSD with a IDE adapter.

Hi pal,

many thanks. I tried immediately.
Upgrade from 9.0 to 9.0.1 was successful, except that the Apple menu is now empty and the DHCP does not work, it does not connect anymore to my smb IP network folder. It seems the TCP/IP stack it not properly set up. In addition it freezes pretty frequently: the cursor is moving but nothing is working.

I tried the Upgrade from 9.0.4. to 9.1, after I choose "All other countries", it says that upgrade to 9.1 works only on English International.

Now I'm stuck in a different scenario.
I'd just fine to have an English version OS.

The options I can see are:
1) back up in the  CD or PCMCIA/FC, format and install a fresh 9.2.2 from a CD. Restore applications by dragging them back in the HD, would it work?
2) replace the HD with a SSD as you recommend, fresh install 9.2.2. How to restore apps from the old HD?
3) find a working 9.2.2 upgrade sit for my ITA 9.0.1
4) replace my ITA OS with the ENG. I found a 9.2.2 ENG system folder:can I replace the system folder in some way?

thanks for any direction and suggestions

Note you can have two system folders.
Can be useful to resort back to previous one if something goes wrong.
If you've already got a full English 9.2.2, just install it.
Rename your old system folder to something helpful.
Use the Startup Disk Control Panel to switch between the two.

Hi,

the Startup Disk on my ITA 9.0.1 did not allow to choose the system folder, only the drive.
I had to launch the 9.2.2 Startup Disk.

and NOW it's fine, I got 9.2.2 in ENG, thanks so much. It's simple once you know the basics :).

The Apple menu is back, the G3 successfully got the IP from DHCP, it connected to my smb shared drive.
Wow!

Can I put the system folder in the PCMCIA/FC, that is properly working?

thanks you all
