Powerbook A1085 17" 1.5 and mac os 9 installation
« on: December 24, 2018, 05:39:57 AM »

Hi guys, i must confess i have lurking on the forum in the past and love the work that have done here.
Always think that never going to be seeing mac os 9 running on this mac models but you have make it possible!.

I'm already the proud owner of an ibook g4 1 ghz model that i have installed mac os 9 to it using the nanopico kernel, and using some ext and hacks found in the forum got it working atmost perefectly.

Now i got a couple of powerbooks for free one of them is a powerbook a1085 17" 1.5 ghz radeon 9700 model.
First thing i try was testing the "mac os 9.2.3 well temped os" iso i found in the forum somewhere a long time ago.
The iso boot find i was able to partition the hard disk and do the restore.
The problem is that when i reboot i get a gray screen, this iso have the nanopico kernel that don't require the OF patching to start.

Someone can point me out why it boot from the cd and not from the hard disk ?.
Also if there's some experience running os 9 on this model or some information that could be useful ?.
Any new version of the hacked mac os cd available kernel ext etc ?

Looked around the threads in the forum but they are very long and they get me very confused.

Thanks!.

I'm not quite sure of what you say it is OF editing.

I had to do it with my 15" PB and while the CD started, the installed system didn't. I moved the Multiprocessor extension from the Extensions folder in the installed system and i got rid of the grey screen.

I mean Open Firmware, the kernel in the install CD already have the hacked rom that don't need the cpu change Open Firmware modifications.

I will try to remove the extension that you suggested.

I assume you have this model:

https://everymac.com/systems/apple/powerbook_g4/specs/powerbook_g4_1.5_17.html

What I found with the Poerbook6,8 is I had to use one of ELN's DEBUG Mac OS ROM files from the Mac Mini thread. I never did get things working very well on that model before I sold it on.

If you are just getting a gray screen, with no "Happy Face Mac" then you likely are never getting pasted the Mac OS ROM file, so you need to enable debugging in Open Firmware and give us a snapshot of the screen.

Command+OPT+O+F at boot, then:

Code: [Select]
dev / 13FFF encode-int " AAPL,debug" property
Then:

Code: [Select]
boot cd:,\\:tbxi
Or the Hard Drive path to the :tbxi resource( Mac OS ROM file ).

Code: [Select]
boot hd:10,\\:tbxi
That assumes the Mac OS ROM file is in a blessed system folder on the 10th partition of your HD.

You may also just boot the :tbxi without a System Folder by providing the absolute path.

Code: [Select]
boot hd:10,\debug\:tbxi

That assumes you have the Mac OS ROM file in a folder named "debug" on the 10th partition of your HD.

You can put the Mac OS ROM file anywhere, when it goes looking for a blessed System Folder, if you have on on CD/HD it will find it.

To get a directory of files and folders on your HD from Open Firmware:

Code: [Select]
dir hd:10,\
Or

Code: [Select]
dir hd:9,\
And so on by partition number.....

Here is the DEBUG Mac OS ROM file that works for the Powerbook6,8.

Go for it, but be aware that there’s all sorts of nasty stuff in those ROMs. If you have a computer with Python 3 and a C compiler, you can do a very neat build using:

Finally got it to boot i have to type this in OF

Code: [Select]

nvedit

dev /cpus/PowerPC,G4@0

80010201 encode-int " cpu-version" property

dev /pci@F2000000/mac-io/i2s/i2s-a

" screamer" encode-string " compatible" property

device-end

Now press Ctrl + C to exit the nvram editor.

Next type the following:

Code: [Select]

nvstore

setenv use-nvramrc? true

reset-all

The computer will now restart and you can either boot from the CD image listed above, or Mac OS 9 if it's been installed on your HD from the same image.

got it from graystash thread

Theres a kernel that can be used so i don't have to do this in OF ?.
Because my battery is dead and each time i plug the power charger on the powerbook i have to do this again.
