High Strangeness with "Newer Tech MaxPower" G3 upgrade
« on: June 07, 2018, 09:29:12 PM »

started rebuilding Powermac 7600/120
it wasn't giving me any video and may have been put into stasis in that status
had obviously pulled all sorts of chips and threw then in TDK box for DATs
replaced the Vram for getting some Video action
installed Rom chip plus LVL2 cache
the cache chip gets blazing hot and won't boot when installed
sort of remember this scenario ages ago
MaxPower control panel tells me it only like setting for 160mhz instead of 260+mhz
because of backside speed or something
my big questing:
Is this fucking CPU upgrade for Nubus machine instead of PCI?
it's been so long & may have just grabbed whatever off ebay ages ago for 7100/8100
does any of this sound like logical "diagnosis"?
recall pulling that LVL2 cache long ago for same reason
no boot/extreme heat on cache chip when installed
7100 has Sonnet upgrade
so may have been buying multiple upgrades for that machine at the time "just in case"

From EveryMac.com (as if this might help).

Mac-Compatible Upgrade Cards: Newer Technology: MAXpowr G3 266 (NuBus) Specs

“The Newer MAXpowr G3 266 (NuBus) features a 240-266 MHz PowerPC 750 (G3) processor (depending on system bus speed) with 512k of backside cache. There are two versions of this card, one version for the Power Mac 6100 (pictured) and another version for the Power Mac 7100 and 8100. Unlike the first version, this card detects the system bus speed and sets itself, similar to Sonnet's series of G3-based PDS cards.”

hmmm
well
that looks like the card in the slot now
giving me currently 40mhz speed increase
no wonder it is freaking on backside & bus speed
ummm
guess will pull it if can find the original processor
can't even think off the top of my head where it would be
yet it's most likely here in box somewhere
then put the lvl2 cache back in
for seeing if that chip got fried
better start looking for the correct sonnet upgrade on ebay
Thanks for info

Sorry, not better news. But… I’ve got a couple of original Apple 300MHz daughtercards (Model 1100's)
from a 9600 if you can’t find your original… and these might work for you. Or, I’ve a 120MHz out of a
9500 as well... if you’d prefer that. [US]  ???
