This is a compilation of stuff you need to get up and running with your very own Pro Tools 24|MIX system!

You will need the following parts:

*At least one MIX Core PCI card
This is the Core of the system (well, duh?).
Contains six (6) Motorola 56k DSP's and the hardware dongle in order to get Pro Tools TDM running. The basic MIX 24 system only concists of this PCI card.

*Any number of MIX Farm PCI cards (optional)
This is what you use to expand your TDM system.
A MIX PLUS system is a MIX Core and MIX Farm card together.
MIX Farm card is exactly like the MIX Core card, but does NOT contain the Pro Tools dongle, just the six (6) DSP's. You can use up to 10 cards in one MIX 24 system, with the last 3 of them being DSP Farm cards. You can also have multiple MIX Core cards together if you get some cheaply. Only the Core card located at the first PCI-slot will be used as the dongle, the rest of the Core cards will act like Farm cards.

If you stumble upon a load of DSP Farm cards (Digidesigns high-end system before the 24|MIX) these will work with the system as well, but are less powerful than the MIX Farm and MIX Core cards.
Use only if you stumble upon them for next to nothing or you get them for free.

*Ribbon cable to connect all the cards with each other (optional)
If you have more than one card, you need this little ribbon cable.
Can be found easily for around $20USD on ebay. There are 2-connector, 5-connector and 10-connector versions of this cable avalible. Buy the 5-connector version directly, even if you only have two cards. Makes is more easy to upgrade the systems with more MIX Farm cards later on.

*An A/D interface
This is what connects you to the analog world. Comes in a 1RU or 2RU cases, the ADAT Bridge, 882, and 888.
ADAT bridge has optical in and out capable of 16 ins and 16outs using external preamps.
The others have 8 ins and 8 outs and internal preamps, but the 888 has balanced XLR connections.

There are allso different versions of these. The original ADAT Bridge, 882 and 888 can be used at the most for 48khz and 16bit sound. The 882/20 for 48khz and 20bit sound (works in 24bit projects too) and the 888/24 and ADAT Bridge/24 for 48khz and 24bit sound.
So what you want is the 882/20 or 888/24. Perhaps the ADAT Bridge/24 if you allready have preams or a digital mixer with optical in and out.

Two of these boxes can be used with every MIX Core or MIX Farm card, for a total of 24 rack boxes, 192 ins and 192 outs if you have 12 cards. Pretty much endless expandability. The ADAT Bridge takes up both connectors on each card using a Y cable, since it supports 16 in and 16 out using external preamps.

*Cables
You need a single and a "Y" cable depending on how many A/D boxes you want to use with each card. It's a special digidesign cable and can be found very easily on ebay. Every card can take one ADAT Bridge or two A/D boxes using a "Y" cable, making a total of 16 ins and 16 outs per card.

*Software
This is the hardest part. You need at least Pro Tools 4.1, but recommended is of course the last OS9 version, which is 5.1.3. You can use your 24|MIX system with OSX Panther and Pro Tools 6.4.1 if you feel like that too, but the plugins are not compatible and need a hardware look (iLok), so 5.1.3 is the best option. TDM plugins are accelerated, but RTAS plugins can be used on the host CPU at the same time as well. It's pretty hard to find this software. I have it and will upload it very soon.

That's pretty much all you need. The cons of this system is that you really need to know what you need since you have allmost endless expandability. It's also pretty difficult to find a "turnkey" system, so you are better off collecting all the parts individually from ebay or craigslist (or a similliar site). The pro's are the expandability, stabillity, sound quality and DSP-power.

Well, of course the 1622 as well, and there where some third party interfaces as well that supported the digi-connector (like the Apogee AD8000, http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/aug98/articles/apogee.html http://www.fullcompass.com/common/files/140-ApogeeAD8000ProductBrochure.pdf).

What is a Digidesign Avid Project Disk I/O PCI Card able to do? Just RTAS and no TDM but TDM interfaces?
It seems to have "old" and "modern" conectors

Hello,

You tell that is possible to run 1 mix core and 11 mix farms but i saw everywhere that only 1 core and 6 mix farms can run together.
Did you test to run pro tools 6.4.1 with 1 core and 11 mix farms?

I have a 13 slots Magma expansion chassis, 1 mix core, 6 mix farms and 5 dsp farms and i'm looking for a 12 node ribbon cable. Can somebody tell me where i can find one because i don't find one?

Thank you

The text is wrong. It should say 10 and not 11.

You can officially have 7 MIX cards and 3 DSP Farm cards running at the same time in a Magma chassis.
The DSP Farm's should be the last 3 cards if you have 10 cards in total.

I know of a friend that successfully used 10 MIX cards at the same time, but it seems like it's up to the specific system you're using if it will work or not.

I myself are using 7 MIX cards right now in the studio. It has been running stable the last year or so with no issues what so ever. Im planning on sourcing 3 DSP Farm cards for the system as well, so I can use the maximum 10 cards.

So go for 10 cards, and get 3 DSP Farms as well, if you want to stay true to the Digidesign supported card combination :)

Yes! The first core card will be the core card, the rest will act as farm cards.
I currently have 3 core card in my mix system.

I have mine hooked up to a couple of 882/20's.
OUT from the 882 to IN on your hardware (effect, compressor etc).
OUT from the hardware effect to IN on the 882.

The easiest way to do it is to use the same number output and input on the Pro Tools interface (in 1 and out 1 etc) to the same hardware effect.

When the wiring is done, use "I/O Setup" and the "Inserts" tab to define what's plugged in where.
When this is done your hardware should pop up in the same menu as your TDM and RTAS plugins.

So since my compressor uses 1/4 and the 888/24 uses xlr would an adapter work? No signal voltage differences? I'm using the pro vla compressor/limiter. I'm used to using standard insert trs cables with my fca1616.

Maybe you can wire the compressor to the 1622 digidesign interface.

1/4 conectors can be balanced or unbalanced. A jack mono is unbalanced. With a stereo TRS to XLR you keep the signal balanced.

Maybe you can wire the compressor to the 1622 digidesign interface.

That was my first thought but the 1622 has only two outputs would be kind of limited.
TRS to XLR it is I guess. I try to always use balanced.

No difference. If you use balanced cables, your signal is balanced. If you don't, it's not.
You won't have any issues. There are no voltage differences at all, it's just different connectors.

I would pick up a couple of 882/20's on eBay for outboards. It's the most convenient way of doing it.

I make them, I just need connectors. Im going through a though period unfortunately so I don't have a lot of motivation to do anything.

Will do a "quick n' dirty" tutorial about making the ribbon cable and post it in the forum.

Fastest 'stock' OS9 Mac would be the MDD 1.25 and for PT the single processor model is recommended. The QS 933 is also highly regarded, as it's almost as powerful and quieter than MDD.

Hello 9DSP

I have a G4 (model M8570 EMC 1914) with firewire 800, 2 Go RAM, NVIDIA Ge Force 4600 Ti graphic card and a SSD 32 Go for the operating system and the softwares. I replaced the original processor (2*1,25Ghz) by a Sonnet Encore / MDX G4 Duet 2*1.8Ghz for Power Mac G4 MDD.
For Pro Tools, I have a Digidesign expansion chassis 13 slots with inside 1 Mix Core, 6 Mix Farms and 3 DSP Farms

It's the fastest rig for Pro Tools 5.1.3 TDM that you can have and it runs like a charm !

If you want this machine to run with Mac os 9.2.2 you have to :

1. For the firmware, the Sonnet cpu needs Boot Rom 4.4.8f2 or higher. On my machine, it's 4.5.7f1
2. Install Mac OS 9 for unsupported systems
3. You have to replace the Mac OS ROM 10.2.1 with Macintosh ROM 10.2.1v1 "Generic", you can find it here (with an extension called Insomnia):
https://www.thinkclassic.org/viewtopic.php?pid=4504#p4504
4. You have to replace the "Apple CPU Plug-ins" extension with this extension in:
System/System Folder/Extensions/Multiprocessing
G4 (model M8570 EMC 1914) firewire 800
Sonnet Encore / MDX G4 Duet 2*1.8Ghz for Power Mac G4 MDD
2 Go RAM
NVIDIA Ge Force 4600 Ti graphic card
Digidesign expansion chassis 13 slots
1 Mix Core, 6 Mix Farms and 3 DSP Farms

the g3 system will obvious cap out much sooner then the above system detaled by unsonic which seems to be the best of the best u could ever have! and the 350 g3 system is probably about the worst/starting area that u would want to even try with ;) but still should work fine albeit without the same muscle

good luck u guys!

This 1.25 Ghz modules can easily be overclocked up to 1.5 Ghz  *usually* . But the best option is the 1.33 Single ( with 2 Mb of L3 cache from xServe) overclocked to 1.5.

Do a forum search about those topics ...

I buy working 2xG5 for 110 dollar yesterday
All slots are full of 256mb and 1gb ram :)
So i put in 1.25GB 333mhz ram in the G4.
And it works super.
The old gentlemen that sold me the G4, gave me 2x120GB 2,5" sata harddrives in a bag :)
Maby i only use 1 of the G5 and put more stuff in the G4

You'll have to use the G4 for your 'old school' PT rig as the G5 won't run OS9/PT 5.1. ... also the SATA drives won't plug directly into the G4 as they use IDE.

I have a couple of MIX cards, a Magma chassis, some Digidesign 882/20 and 888 (16bit) laying around that I don't use. I thought I would build myself another MIX system, but I find myself spending more time in Logic, so I wont need it.

Well i can confirm that db60 to db60 crossover cables do not work on the 1622 :(   no damage to the 1622 but I've still yet to run a digi test to see if the cards suffered. Really would like to use this interface. No way I'm making a cable even if i had the correct pin outs 60 wires is about 50 too many for me to care about messing with. If anyone comes across this rare digilink cable it would be much oblieged to forward me the link. If it's in the USA that is...

I can 100% confirm this.
Purchased one to test this theory this month.
Have to mail it back now :-(

for $12 maybe I try modifying the wires as they simply flip flop some wile to pin locations.

not sure I get the question.

there is not Internal AES / EBU routing that I know of

but.. there was Digidesign Sound Manager...maybe

http://archive.digidesign.com/download/sndrvr/

you could however externally loop a cable back to another interface that is not on the digidesign mix buss.

i want to slave a os9 rig to a modern hdx rig via 2x 192 . one 192 is hooked up to the slave os9 rig via legacy port to a mix core. then i want to send audio to a standalone app namely sonicworx. is this driver my option that works?

Revisiting this thread 10 years after I started it. Going to resurrect this rig and put it back to use after I move my studio to it's new location. Can't wait to get it back up and running!

Might be time to fix a Pro Tools Instant DAW image and host here?

Sure!

I use to install DieHard Instant DAW + Protools any flavour with tuned by tad pack for TDM in that case.

With an Protools with Instant TDM users would use Sony Oxford more easily when restored...

Looking for MacOS 9.2.4
