older Browsers for older OSX Hackintosh (2007?)
« on: March 08, 2018, 12:50:58 PM »

just built a hackintosh w/ 10.5.7
and im having trouble finding the browsers that work on Leopard! (lol)

does anyone know of any sites that have old versions of google Chrome Browser that will run on leopard?
i think what happened is google made that oldapps.com site stop letting people download old browser versions
and now i cant find a download.

According to Wikipedia, Chrome for OSX was released in 2009 and ran on 10.9 Intel.
That's pretty much how I remember it.
I suppose you could (maybe) get it to run on 10.5 Intel.
Question is, why? The consensus at the time was that it sucked on Mavericks - how would you expect it to be tolerable on Leopard?

the google chrome browser was out far before 10.9 (which is Mavericks?)
snow leopard was released in late 2009... ie therefore at that time there was still alot of people using the older 10.5.x Leopard which was still recieving updates.

anyway; regardless;

it seems that browsers compatible with leopard are falling through the cracks  right about now

i was hoping for a download source site, similar in type to say: http://powerpcsoftware.com/

I used Chrome on 10.6, so it was available before 10.9.

You can find the most recent version of Chrome for 10.5 here: http://www.oldapps.com/mac/google_chrome.php
Otherwise run FireFox 16 (native), TenFourFox or Leopard Webkit (through Rosetta).

So, after all that, you've discovered that Leopard PPC browser support (10-4 and Safari / Webkit) is actually better that hacked Intel?

What a surpriseā€¦

It depends on the hacked Intel version you choose. To browse with a 2016 browser on a Quad Hack on 10.6.8 is more quick than browse on any G4 on any OS but is less fun.

Lion, ML, and Yosemite runs on most intel core 2 duo. I would check that for browsing.

Only case I would install a iAtkos for Leopard is for my M-Box. On Intel iAtkos S3 (SL) is superior and there Logic 9 and Protools 9-10 runs great

sorry im not quite sure what u are referring to about PPC vs Intel...
in spring/summer/fall 2006 most apps were migrated + made compatible with Intel Mac (Universal Binaries) now, from that time, up untill leopard being phased out, (final update being released) around August  2009 (around when snow leopard was released?) thats *3* years of browser development time... mid2006-mid2009
i wasnt really commenting on anything to do with PPC vs INTEL but more so on the
usability of whatever browsers i could find that are able to run on Leopard,
tbh i expected it to be more "still usable" then it is.. im not sure exactly why; im not a developer for Chrome or Firefox... (but hey! that would be a fun job) im not sure what exact changes in the browser rendering model or client side scripting have gone on.. but apparently these old versions of browsers are pretty outdated and ill equipped to the point where downloading small driver files from random sites becomes a total impossibility (and nuisance) .. i guess things just move fast in the browser world these days?

re: why a leopard hackintosh?
i have some hardware audio interface that supports Leopard.
obviously the goal of creating the hackintosh Leopard box was/is more of an experiment
to test with other hardware that i own.. firewire + PCI interfaces
with direct support for OSX Leopard... albeit i picked a strange board to do it with
but it still scores about the same as my imac 2008 machine on processor benchmark
now that i put a Core 2 EXTREME cpu in it

my little intel-leopard hackintosh is dead right now for the moment though
i killed the PSU leaving it on all night without sleep enabled
woke up and it was off and wont turn on :D RIP!
i guess my Nvidia 6600GT killed the poor little 300w power supply i had in there
which sucks because i could have used that vintage AOPEN PSU in a vintage pentium 133 because it had the older AT motherboard connections

yes snow leopard was a great version for both real macs + hackintosh
the stability was great.. i have the most experience with that version, but i have an extra ilok license for software version that only runs on leopard (m-powered pro tools versions)
and i wanted to explore the earlier 32bit/64bit support of leopard's - to check out it's compatibility with older software (from 2004-2008 time period)

i had thought when i installed that Leopard had a 64bit kernel (that you could toggle/switch between 32 + 64 bit modes) but wikipedia tells me that leopard was always only ever a 32bit kernel..  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacOS#Release_history

this page lays it out nicely..
Processor support -vs- Application Support -vs- kernel
so leopard 10.5 had 32/64bit intel & ppc PROCESSOR support, with 32/64bit APPLICATION support, while only having a 32bit KERNEL
so snow leopard was the first to have the option of running a 64bit kernel..
i thought that was also included in Leopard! but no

You can get a recent version of TenFourFox PR14 for Intel Tiger, Leopard & Snow Leopard Here:

https://sourceforge.net/projects/tenfourfox/files/unstable/contrib/

PR = Parity Release with latest builds of FireFox 2019

Another good one for Snow Leopard is ArticFox 27.9.17 (64-bit)
