QS2001 CPU Heat sink differences?
« on: September 29, 2017, 02:40:41 PM »

I picked up an old QS2001 733Mhz model off Kijiji for $20. It's a really great machine, but the CPU is weak without any L3 cache. It's also my slowest Mac.

Since I've been looking at CPU upgrades and researching them, I came across a claim that the Dual Processor 800 and maybe the 867 single might have had larger or different heat sink part numbers. Do I need to change my heat sink when using upgraded Apple CPUs?

I searched this forum a lot to find pics and details on the heat sink differences but couldn't turn up anything. I tried google too but a lot of junk shows up on google image search!

I did look at the hardware maintenance manual posted in these forums, and Apple's pic looks a little different than my heat sink. There is a very small notch about 5x5mm cut out along one edge of the top of the heat sink that the manual does not show. Is this the only difference? I've attached pics of my heat sink.

Can any hardware otaku come to my rescue?

the heatsink should be the same for the 867, but i *think* you also have to replace the daugtercard because of the different cache speed. the 733s is (nominal) much higher because of the different architecture.

IIO, what do you mean by the "daughtercard"? The L3 cache is located on the CPU board itself.

Do you have a QS2001 with the 867 MHz single or 800 dual processor that you can upload a photo of? So that we can compare heat sink designs?

Daughtercard = CPU board

Thanks for clearing that up GaryN. I was confused as of course I will be changing the daughtercard if I upgrade CPUs...
