Initial setup for a toal noob (o;

I just acquired MDD G4 with a Motu 2408 mkii audio interface...

What would you recommend as additional hardware/software supported under MacOS 9 for generating imple tracks with sampled sound, Midi keyboard and the like?

Does any software exist which comes with a preset of drums/instruments?

My son is currently 12 and getting keyboard lessons...so kinda thinking of doing a session together (o;
