G4 MDD won't boot, beep once, USB Setup Error
« on: February 01, 2016, 08:43:27 PM »

I have a dual screen setup, a 22' and 17' Apple monitor. The MDD will only power on when the 17' is directly connected to the ADC port on the video card. I have a Apple ADC/DVI adapter and two non-Apple HDMI monitors. When the MDD boots, it prints a screen full of this error message:

USB Setup Error:  5c000000 8200
USB Setup Error:  5c000000 8204

Followed by a Open Firmware prompt. Any thoughts? Pressing the power button does nothing in any other screen configuration. When I plug the 17' ADC connector into the video card, the MDD powers up without pressing the power button.

The Apple monitor power-on signal and the monitor prefs button talk through the USB bus. The computer should absolutely not start just by plugging the monitor in although it might wake from sleep so (I know this sounds stupid but):

1) Are you certain the computer's off? Does it start and boot from scratch?
2) With it plugged in directly like that, does the prefs button work and (important)
3) Do the USB ports on the back work?
4) What happens if you just connect the 17" to the DVI out with the ADC adapter?

Last, you should be able to startup with just an ADC/DVI brick and a non-Apple monitor with the front panel power button… I think…
Is that connection actually ADC out > ADC/DVI brick > HDMI adapter > HDMI monitor? With 2 adaptors inline, anything can happen - or not happen.

My first guess is that your 17" has a control circuit and/or USB issue.  I think your setup error message is telling you there's something wrong with the monitor. 17" Studio Displays are notorious for going bad like this. Some people suspect static zaps the control board through a wired mouse or such.

Do 1 thru 4 above and holla back with the results.

This can actually happen and it's an indication of a physical problem with the button on the monitor.
I have one of these monitors and it will some times power on (not from sleep) the computer when plunging it in.
Because it's a defect in the button, it will also randomly put the computer sleep and wake it up while your using it.

But yes a correctly working monitor will not turn the computer on when plugging it in.

Is the 22" apple monitor ADC?  If it is what happens when you plug only that one in?

Now there's a thought… How do you think they get "stuck"? There's no actual button - it's a pair of (capacitive?) contacts you short with your finger. That's why it's thought that the controller can get zapped by static electricity. What don't I know?

If the part of the casing was impacted by something it can cause the two contacts to be pushed together and create a direct connection rather than one that measures capacitance.  The controller could be bad too.  Either way it could be a fault in the monitor.

After spending a few hours last night troubleshooting, I resolved my problem.

My MDD would not power on using any combination of ADC, DVI, Apple, non-Apple monitors UNLESS the 17' monitor ADC connector was plugged into the ADC port on the back of the ADC/DVI ATI video card. When the 17' wasn't connected, no lights lit on the logic board and pressing the power button did nothing. For the last year or so, a vertical red line permanently appeared on the 17' screen so I had a feeling it was going bad. When the 17' ADC connector was connected to the video card, the MDD powered on without pressing the power button. It would emit a loud tone, followed by a chime and then would boot to open firmware.

Luckily, I had a spare MDD (#2) that suffered a bad power supply which I never replaced. Thinking it could be the front panel power button, I swapped those and nothing changed. Then I removed the power supply from MDD #1 and installed it into MDD #2. Connected the 22' the ADC monitor and the power cord, pressed the power button and it chimed and successfully booted into OS9. I then connected a non-Apple monitor to the DVI connector and both monitors and the MDD #2 booted and worked fine.

After all of this, I suspect that the bad 17' monitor somehow killed the logic board in MDD #1? Nevertheless, I learned to NEVER use the 17' monitor again!

Congratulations! You're an unofficial Genius!

The board is probably fine. The 17" is toast and was messing with the USB bus; hence the boot to Open Firmware, the USB error etc.
Actually, if you take the 17" apart, you'll find that the front panel makes a very cool picture frame - seriously!

Gary you got me 'ta thinking'... Maybe the old 17" CRT could be transformed into some sort of fish tank??? ;D ;D
