Temperature monitor program MACOS 9
« on: September 18, 2015, 01:29:14 AM »

Hi, after a long break, I´m back here.

I am planning about complete disconnection of the fan in my PPC 9600/300, to get a more silent computer.   I guess if exist a program to monitor de cpu and motherboard temperature, so I can control to not burn the machine, and go back to fan connection if needed.

Any suggestion?

Thanks in advance!

OS installed on the 9600 is 9.1  ;D

As someone who has been looking for such a thing for my MDD forever with NO success, I just might have the answer for you.

"Jeremy's Bundle" is a very handy set of control strip modules for OS9 that includes a temp monitor that might (stress might) work on your 9500.

They're free at:  http://www.kezer.net

Be careful! The sensor on your CPU board is probably NOT too accurate and you could overheat without any indication of it!
I'm sure you're aware of the risk you'll be taking as far as a total overheat, but don't forget the stress caused by a series of "close calls" can kill your CPU also.
There are any number of modern fans you can replace the original with that create far less noise…you'd be well advised to try that approach first.

I'm sure you wouldn't disconnect the radiator fan in your car, would you?

There is a few utilities for monitoring temperature in Mac Os 9, like Thermograph and  Metronome 1.4.5. But barely work, because the temperature "hardware" have suffered a lot of changes alongside the PPC family.

Thermograph was written by Jeremy Kezer of "Jeremy's Bundle" - it's basically a chart recorder hooked to his control panel temp sensor code. It unfortunately, doesn't work on the MDD and probably doesn't work on a QS either.

MORE USELESS INFO: Many older macs had something called a "TAU" (Thermal Assist Unit) - a thermal monitoring doohickey set close to CPUs that had none of their own. When PPC G4s were deployed, they required awareness of their new (at the time) temp sensors, although it seems that the duals may have used yet some other sensor mounted right between the two CPUs…

- DON'T QUOTE ME ON THIS STUFF… IT'S JUST WHAT LITTLE MISINFORMATION I'VE HEARD WHILE LOOKING FOR THIS -

Also, I've never heard of Metronome… Anybody have a copy a poor MDD user could try? ……… Tron?

Here you have (attached). But keep in mind that usually report an inaccurate value (around 30 C less than actual value!  :o )

Tried Metronome (Thanks Tron!). A handy little app for a quick look at the state of your CPU.

Despite being written by someone at, and probably originally provided by Sonnet, it identified my Sonnet Encore MDX Duet 1.8Ghz card as a PPC 604 running at 500Mhz, just before it crashed and froze the system!   Aaahhh… the story of my life.

Before you waste your time typing, let it be known that the proc temp reads out just fine with Bresink's Temperature Monitor app in OSX - it's not the upgrade.

It really does look as though there's a little "black hole" in development in the G4/PPC/OS9 era (Year?). Nobody got around to building a G4 temperature app for OS9 before it became "obsolete"…

If anybody knows differently, puleeeze holler!

you would be better off relying on an actual hardware monitor of some type with a stick on lcd panel and stickin  a wire inside
or theres probably something that will broadcast the temp via bluetooth or something these days

Hi, thanks for replies,

It was my fault. I didn´t take in mind that I have no possibility of power supply fan disconnection (if I want to keep it working!!)...   WTF...

Thanks again,
