New User questions, I've been studying
« on: September 17, 2015, 08:47:28 AM »

Found a great deal on a Powermac G4 MDD for $50.
To my understanding if it only has 2 FW ports which are FW400,  OS9 will work. But, if it has 3 FW ports it would mean the machine is a FW800 and OS9 won't work.? The one I'm going to buy has 2 FW ports. Thanks for all the info, this site is amazing! Looking forward to contributing!

It cant be a fw800 model, but even if it is you might be able to run it with a special cd. I recommend a quicksilver because the mdd can be very noisy. And you dont have to worry about os9 because it will run. You should be fine with the machine. Keep in mind you cant just install from a cd, you need to get a restore image for this particular model.

Hi,

I am also newbie, never had much to do with os 9, the last mac wich I had was to limited to keep, but I loved the OS.

I did my homework and running in order: mac os 9, mac os X, morphos, linux on a mdd 1.25 dual.  In fact typing in classilla in os 9 right now.

As said the system is noisy.  There seems to be a patch from apple but I need to try it.  Though many say it is not enough.

Still I love the machine for it speeds and having so much choice.  For me I need the speed for linux mint so I'll need to find a solution.

When the mdd 1.255 is put in a corner it makes far to much noice so be warned you will need to get your toolbox out then.

I have no stability issues so far.  Had a few locks up, but never whith productivity.

Thanks guys, I would like to try to keep in another room if possible, this is what they did at a studio I recorded at. I've got to get a hd and a copy of the OS9 though. Hd should be dirt cheap and I saw the OS here or at Macintosh Garden.

Dont forget with the mdd you cant use the cd installer. There is a restore image that works. Os9general.dmg i think.

For some reason on my system no disk to be initialized.  Even after mac os x with format with os 9 drivers no joy with that.  Hope it works for him.

Why would you guysbe using things like the general image from the Mac garden when we have much newer images for the MDD right here with all the updated drivers
The OS9general.dmg has an older system rom and older video drivers.  From our download section we have CD images and also installs that can be direct directly to the hard drive from an external

because they dont understand what we have here untill u communicate it to them effectively
this is why i told u its not a great idea to have too many sections in the sites layout. not everyone has the attention to detail to check out whats in each section.. or where everthing is. i cant even be bothered half the time to look its 2015 theres so much fighting for our attention everyday.. whos got time to inspect every nook + cranny of a website ..  3 sections people can handle.. 13.. forget it

or even calling a section "DAW host software" these words may mean something to u.. but absolutely nothing to the next guy.. whos looking around going "where the hell is logic audio??"
this is what i mean about "user interface" makin it or breakin it

same reason why having a "ppc X zone" under each area of the forum was a fail strategy.. too many fucking sections of the site.. noone has the time to keep tabs on this many different areas of a site

Jeez Chris, take a Xanax… The FOURTH section from the top of the Home page is:

Downloads (Mac OS Images, Diagnostics, & Utilities)

How much easier do you want it? Stevie Wonder could see it.

A user's determination and attention to detail will always be directly proportional to their need and desire. Simplicity is great - all things should be a simple as possible. but here's the problem. OS9Lives has become THE goto resource for almost ALL things OS9. It's the last and only URL on the net where you can get real information, software, links, ideas, opinions, hacks, etc. etc. etc. for the OS AND the old hardware it runs on. (OK, I'm not trying to insult you, it's not the only one), but it is the one that bubbles up to the top of the search engines. That's how I found it.

I had NO trouble finding the time to go through the site section by section. Hell, I felt like I struck gold, suddenly being able to easily find and access stuff I always had to search and search for, feeling like the last lonely luddite running 9 in the world!

Could it be better organized? Of course, but it's grown into what it is. It was never laid out from scratch and indexed and cross-referenced.

WHO CARES? My life is definitely, measurably easier and more productive as a direct result of OS9Lives' existence. When and if the day comes when GaryN has 6400 posts on this forum alone, who knows, I may feel differently. Until then, I'm happy to dig a little knowing there's gold to be found.

Sorry dude, but Diehard, Tron, you… you're just victims of your own success. Just know that everyone truly appreciates your work.

sure.. but things could be simplified a bit.. if i was admin i would change the layout
theres just too many different sections, too many words.. tbh the site gives me a fucking headache
i dont even read the layout anymore i press CTRL-F and type what wim looking for to find it as fast as possible before im forced to read a half page essay just to figure out what bloody section im looking for
it does my head in so im sure it does that to alot of other people aswell

- everything doesnt have to say "Digital Audio Workstation" or "DAW" in front of it
ie: "    DAW Sample Technologies" becomes.... *drumroll*.... "hard + soft samplers" <-- i know right.. its just so minimal it blows my mind.. lol
- everything doesnt have to say "for mac os 9"
- there doesnt need to be two seperate troubleshooting sections.. wtf is the difference between macos 9 installing + troubleshooting  VS comptuer setup + apple hardware troubleshooting.. stick these two sectiosn together as one and call it "troubleshooting"
-all the members only sections that say "digital audio workstation" in the titles should say instead "members only" ie: "members only effects plugins" "members only host applications" to remind people that these sections arent publicly viewable by the general Internet public that hasnt signed up

Community
Classic Mac OS
Hardware + Performance gains
Public Downloads
Troubleshooting
Audio + Midi Gear
Daw Software

if the site wasnt 4 pages vertically from top to bottom it would be alot better to use
trust me
also if the titles were minimized to be easier to visually recognize without reading a sentence each time u want to figure out what section is what - its a fucking headache to come on the board plain + simple
like i said i cant even read the forum anytmore i search with CTRL-F to find whatw im after really fast and avoid reading the main page of the board at all costs because its TOO MUCH

kill the ppc osx zones .. again.. too many different fucking sections... having one section for cubase stuff, one section for logic stuff.. one section for ableton stuff. that makes sense.. multiplying it for each os is ridiculous - u notice noones talking in those sections they are basically empty

even the subsections of "MAC OS9 Audio Plugins (VSTfx VSTi TDM RTAS MAS) Reference"
could be compacted back into the original section..
ie that is remove "native instruments" "Arturia" etc and just put them in one sections called simply "PLUGINS reference" <--- easy to look at
compared to ----> "MAC OS9 Audio Plugins (VSTfx VSTi TDM RTAS MAS) Reference" <--- too much

And the topic was? Ok.  Pax and jvdbossc welcome to MacOS9Lives! If there is still another question, make a new post. This is closed/locked

Chris all positive critics are welcome. Keep your negative critics about MacOS9Lives! on your site if you feel so. Or PM DieHard or me. I respect the way DieHard has kept the forum. And every user should.

GaryN thanks for your support

devils_advisor one bear is enough.
