Youtube with Mac OS 9
« on: April 14, 2015, 08:04:25 PM »

Just wanted to report that wabisukenohana did a new version of his "Youtube Browser for Classilla" 2 weeks ago. This pice of software is abolutely great and works now as well with YT ssl and all the latest changes  they did. It even brings YT back to the very first G3/233 Macs (in small resolutions) and is really usable with nice G4 machines.

Another nice effect is, you can enjoy YT without all the nasty commercials! ;)

Wonderful! I looked for a newer, working version in January, but to no vain.
Great to be able to use Youtube in OS9 again :)

YTBfC is a Byblos stele that enables Classilla to play YouTube videos.

What is a Byblos stele?

Like the famous Rosetta Stone stele which enabled the translation of Egyptian hieroglyphs from ancient Greek and Demotic scripts (and Apple's Rosetta, allowing superior older PowerPC code to run on newer inferior x86 processors), the Byblos steles you can create for Classilla can allow modern web pages to be rewritten dynamically for Classilla's older layout engine and those of us continuously inhabiting Mac OS 9.

Well, I just want to make sure my "non music postings" are really welcome and do not get deleted like sometimes in the past. If that is ok for everybody, I can go on and advertize this forum for sure.

When I try to use YTBfC, it says "not found"... Did YouTube change again? I have Flash 7 and YTBfC installed.

Yes, YT changed again the real paths to the streams, ... at the moment YTBFC is not working. Recently I need to download the stuff with some webservice and use FLVPalyer9 for watching YT videos at Mac OS 9. And I do not reach Wabisukenohana :-(

But for a good JavaScript developer it is maybe a simple thing to solve. The changes between the last 2 versions of YouTube Browser for Classilla were a few characters in the JS-code, …

I can't seem to locate a working youtube downloader that works under Classilla. Or at least a working standalone app. Any of them I see in a google search can't be rendered and have incompatible websites. I hope Classilla gets a update eventually.

There is a proof of concept solution here:

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/youtube-app-for-mac-os-9.2162971/#post-26965457

I say proof of concept because as much as I try, the website is too variable to reproduce useable results - for me, time to download a video could be from 2 minutes to downloading a corrupt file after half hour...or failing altogether.

What is very interesting in all this though, is the realisation through changing the file type and creator, QuickTime does have the required codec to play 3gp files!

This does mean to anyone versed in scripting, the previous downloader/player could be modified to parse the .3gp file instead of the .flv and play it back in QuickTime.

To summarize:

Browse "YouTube" using classilla on the less bloated genyoutube.net

Get the 3gp file if available

Use FileType (version 1.0.1) to change the "creator" and "type"
Creator = TVOD
type = mpg4

What I see interesting here, as Dronecatcher noted on the MacRumors post is that Quicktime can play 3gp files, but you have to change using filetype to "fool" Quicktime.

Just an FYI side note; for those that do not know we have discussed the "Filetype" OS 9 Utility, you can get it here

http://www.frederikseiffert.de/filetype/

There are many reasons to have this utility available in Mac OS 9, you can easily fix "Broken" files that were bounced to a PC

It works!

But note you must have QuickTime 6.
QT5 just ignores the files.

As mentioned, sometimes the downloads fail - I just get a spinning cursor. Not identified a pattern yet.
Of course, changing the type/creator can be done with any suitable utility.

I guess that's my evening planned...

This works... even if it's 240p it's better than nothing.

Can an Applescript be made in order to drop the .3gp file on it and then magically convert it with FileType and open Quicktime?

It's been too long since I script anything and it was always in OS X.

My version converts filetype with a droplet - launching is only one more click.

Genyoutube seems to have become unuable in Classilla due to TLS/https issues... any alternatives?
