Recomendation for external USB burner
« on: February 14, 2015, 10:09:46 AM »

My external burner is slowly burning out and we need a replacement.  The unit i have now is a DVD+-/RW + DVD-RAM LG brand burner and have been very pleased with it especially the ability to burn/use DVD-RAM disks since those disks are like having an external hard drive.  The unit is USB and FireWired.

Any Recommendations for a external  ( USB and or FireWire connection ) DVD+/-RW Drive Burner and possibly DVD-RAM.

most LG burners will support non-cartridge DVD-RAM.
i think u would have a hard time finding a sata to firewire cd enclosure
u might as well search for firewire dvd burner on ebay

yep, in fact new external firewired burners are hard to find and from my experience of getting "burned" on a so called  eBay/amazoon deal on a piece of midi gear,  well i am going to leave it at that...

would like to have recommendation from the members here that own/use external USB burners with their power macs

still have the enclosure for the somewhat dead burner ( many of the burns fail or simply stop burning and i use top of the line disks that have always worked )   it may be burner or the power supply

in my experience of trying to fix these types of hardware problems  is to simply throw away the unit and buy new because the replacement parts ( more then often already used/refurbished ) cost more then a brand new unit that comes with   a warranty

they only work in 1.1 base level and not USB2.0 I know where of I speak.

I advise a firewire interface. look at this model in particular.

I use a very similar model to this myself for PPC and intel machines, even in OS9 via firewire. this is a universal caddy. I'd then grab hold of an apple 5.25" IDE superdrive and mount it in there.

yes but the speed of the usb under mac os 9 will be only version 1.1 usb which is appropriate only for keyboards + mice + ohter such low speed peripherals...

as u know there are some usb 1.1 audio interfaces that work with mac os 9.. such as the original mbox

but for harddrives + burning.. this will be incredibly slow + not reccommended
u need a drive or drive enclosure that has firewire
