RAM/MEMORY test
« on: February 11, 2015, 09:19:58 PM »

Is there a OS 9 software that can run a memory test  on the ram sticks installed ?

TechTool Pro has this feature in their OS X versions.

It's in the land of "better than nothing" but I'm not sure by how much.

I have a CD called "Apple Hardware Test", it also has written on it "Power Mac G4" and "SW version 1.2.4", and "For Diagnosing Hardware Problems".  My understanding is that Apple included these disks with their computers.  I'm not sure how exactly the disk needs to match the computer.

You hold down "C" to boot from the disk, and it has a limited version of OS 9.1 on it.  The test is pretty simple and includes a short and long test that gives you a pass or fail on the computer's hardware components, one of which is the RAM.

I've only used mine on my Quicksilver 2002.  It's very basic test, the two screens look Atari 1040ST-ish and I have no idea how meaningful the results are.  On my G4, as far as the RAM it will identify the 3 slots, the RAM that is in each slot and whether each RAM stick passes or fails the test.

These are the CD's that people can never find when they sell their computer.  There's probably millions in people's closets around the world that will end up in the trash.  Finding one might not be that easy, but I see them on eBay.  Here's one that was for an iMac (what iMac?) http://www.ebay.com/itm/Apple-OS-iMac-DV-Models-iMovie-2-Apple-Hardware-Test-4-Disc-Set-/281383355756?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4183c1456c

yes there are versions. I carry them for specialist work and they're part of my contract kit. they're only given to apple registered field engineers which is my license, even though my main work is as a studio engineer, had to train as an apple tech because of college, uni and running a TDM environment all the time. To perform ram tests, you need V3 of Techtool Pro, or a bootable volume / CD running Techtool pro 4 which performs ram testing. AHT will do intensive testing in 4 pattern modes to check for latch and non latch ram problems. I'll see about providing the older supported AHT images to burn to CD's if one of the admins can sort me out with A-Drive to upload data.

Rebuilding a recording studio after falling victim to a pro audio company who cleaned out an analogue studio for modern equipment upgrades that went wrong. With help from amazing people, manufacturers, etc, things are looking up. Now trying to rebuild the G3 / G4 side of the studio.
