Maybe it is not compatible with Mac Os 9.
I assume that the SATA card is working Ok...

Do you have tried Toast 5.2.x , CD-Copy, Apple CD/DVD Driver, Toast CD Reader?...

i´ve tried toast 5, toast 8 and toast 10.

it spins up when you feed it a volume, but does not even read it, not even with toast and not even in OSX.

i have it on bus 0 of a sonnet branded card, and on bus 1 there is a HD.

should it work this way? i would understand if it didnt boot from an OS9 CD, but it can not even read disks in 10.4?

i also wonder how i would open the tray of it. on OS9 it would be at least very fast to do that using toast (if it would work) but on OSX it would be a bit mad, as toast 8 requires 5-10 seconds to open. :)

May be the Optical Drive is damaged.

In Mac Os 9 there is a couple of utilities to open the Optical Drive if you don't have a capable keyboard. The utilities are called "Eject Upper Drive" and "Eject Lower Drive" and are usually located in a folder named "Eject Extras".

BTW, for an optical drive, a PATA to SATA converter is a good option also.

all of the third party utilities i tried just open the IDE drive and dont give oyu any option to choose between multiple drives. :)

well since it doesnt work via SATA i will have no other choice. maybe it does not work with an PATA adapter either, then i at least know that the drive is faulty.

would be a pity thou, this one of the rare drives which supports x12 writing to DVD RAM.

it would be nice to know if and how it generally works with SATA, because on the long run that would be best option for a BD burner in a G4. will get another one soon and try again.

silly question, but the voltage of the power cable from the sonnet card should be ok with any optical drive, isnt it?

test the optical drive in another computer first to ensure that it works for read/write before blaming the sata adapter!

which sata pci adapter are u using?

its possible the firmware of the plextor drive could be to blame..
check for a firmware update from plextor and even if there isnt a new revision rewrite the firmware
this might have to be done in a pc, firmware updates can be made for osx but way more common that they only provide the app to do it under windows, imgburn has a way of checking the firmware i think and checking for updates

also, strange things liek this have happened to me from damaged hard drives being connected
i would also test the optical drive connecetd to the sata card on its own without the hard drive
just to be sure its not being caused by the hard drive itself..
ie: i have sseen drives that stop the machine frm booting up even... and simply removing the hard drive
and everything is normal again

"Eject Upper Drive" and "Eject Lower Drive" open all master ¿? Optical Drivers, no matter where they are connected. I just tested it right now with a master Optical Driver on the ATA 33 bus, and another on a master ¿? SATA card, both open at the same time at "Eject Upper Drive" launch.

The cable from the sonnet SATA card is a DATA only cable, without power nor voltage.

yeah, well yes, i connected the burner to bus 0 of the sata card, which should make it a "master". (i hope?)

i am not very aware of those modes .. because for HDs it has never been an issue since we got rid of scsi.

aha, so they should just open all drives, thats what i thought.

yes, err, but of course i also gave it power :) ... from the power connection for the zip slot ... it just wanted to make sure that it is impossible, that an optical drive maybe does not like it, because it asks for 3V or something. :)
